Purification of bioethanol fermentation broth using hydrophilic PVA crosslinked PVDF-GO/TiO_(2) membrane

The presence of impurities in the bioethanol fermentation broth should be removed to mitigate any possible ineffective refining processes as well as to enhance bioethanol production. In this study, a prefiltration process was carried out for separating fermentation yeast cells and residual substrates using a microfiltration membrane. Hydrophilic polyvinylidene fluoride-graphene oxide/titanium dioxide(PVDF-GO/TiO_(2)) membrane with polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) surface-coating modification was fabricated and characterized. Membrane modification attempts have succeeded in increasing the hydrophilicity as indicated by contact angle decline from 72.10° to 34.83° and affinity towards water leading to higher water permeability. The performance evaluation showed that 90.77% of unwanted by-products(yeast cells and residual substrate) can be removed. This high rejection is also followed by a high and stable flux performance at 40.20 L·m^(-2)·h^(-1) where the flux was increased by 13 times compared to that of the neat membrane. The PVA-coated PVDF-GO/TiO2showed the best anti-biofouling performance with a flux recovery ratio after 5 days incubation(FRR5d) of 93.55%. This membrane material has excellent prospects in future membrane development for either in-situ application or as a pre-filtration in the fermentation process to separate living cells and residual substrates before being further processed in the refining processes.

Objectives:Resection of the middle turbinate(MT)during endoscopic sinus surgery(ESS)has been a controversial topic among otolaryngologists for many *** studies advocate resection and have shown improved outcomes postoperatively,while studies favoring preservation show a decreased incidence of postoperative *** current practice pattern regarding this subject is *** goal of this study was to learn the current practice of MT resection during ESS among ***:We performed an electronic anonymous survey of practicing ***:We found that the majority of the 252 responders stated that they will perform an MT resection in certain clinical situations,while there is a small subset that advocates never resecting the MT for inflammatory sinus disease(n=6,2.4%).Participants were significantly more likely to perform MT resection in patients undergoing revision compared to primary ESS for all conditions *** complication of greatest concern among participants was iatrogenic frontal sinus obstruction,while empty nose was of the least *** majority of participants responded that MT resection was of extreme or moderate benefit for improved visualization and drug delivery *** compared to general otolaryngologists,fellowship-trained rhinologists were less concerned about potential complications following MT resection and were more likely to perceive an extreme or moderate benefit from turbinate resection ***:There remains debate over MT resection among otolaryngologists,but the results of this study show that the majority of participating otolaryngologists will perform a resection in certain clinical situations.

Sustainable intensification of cropping systems is a strategy to increase productivity and reduce disservices of conventional ***[Camelina sativa(L.)Crantz]and field pennycress(Thlaspi arvense L.)are winter annual oilseed crops well suited to fill the fallow period between corn(Zea mays L.)and soybean[Glycine max(L.)Merr.]in the *** Corn Belt,but their inclusion may be limited by resource use limitations.A 2-year study was conducted from 2015 to 2017 in the *** Midwest to evaluate the effect of double cropping on winter oilseed crops and soybean productivity and economic *** included relay-and sequential-cropped soybean with winter camelina and field pennycress,and monocrop soybean as *** and grain yield of winter oilseed crops were not affected by cropping *** over years and cropping systems,winter camelina resulted in more biomass,nitrogen(N)uptake and grain yield by 240,186 and 139% respectively,compared to field *** biomass,N uptake and yield were higher in relay relative to sequential *** soybean resulted in similar total grain yield(soybean+winter oilseed crop)compared to monocropped *** cropping soybean could maintain net return compared to monocropped *** indicate that double cropping winter oilseed crops with soybean can be economically viable in the *** ***,research aimed at optimizing yield through N and water use while improving ecosystem services is needed.

Cyanobacteria can produce cyanotoxins such as microcystin-LR(MC),saxitoxin(STX),and anatoxin-a(ANTX-a)which are harmful to humans and other *** removal efficiencies of STX and ANTX-a by powdered activated carbon(PAC)was investigated,aswell as when MC-LR and cyanobacteriawere *** conductedwith distilled water and then source water,using the PAC dosages,rapid mix/flocculation mixing intensities and contact times of two drinking water treatment plants in northeast *** pH 8 and 9,STX removal was 47%-81%in distilled water and 46%-79%in source water,whereas it was 0-28%for pH 6 in distilled water and 31%-52%in source *** 1.6μg/L or 20μg/L MC-LR was present with STX,STX removal was increased with PAC simultaneously removing 45%-65%of the 1.6μg/L MC-LR and 25%-95%of the 20μg/L MC-LR depending on the ***-a removal at pH 6 was 29%-37%for distilled water and 80%for source water,whereas it was 10%-26%for pH 8 in distilled water and 28%for pH 9 in source *** presence of cyanobacteria cells decreased ANTX-a removal by at least 18%.When 20μg/L MC-LR was present with ANTX-a in source water,59%-73%ANTX-a and 48%-77%of MCLR was removed at pH 9 depending on the PAC *** general,a higher PAC dose led to higher cyanotoxin *** study also documented that multiple cyanotoxins can be effectively removed by PAC for water at pH’s between 6 and 9.
