Expression patterns of transforming growth factor-beta and its receptors in gastric mucosa of patients with refractory gastric ulcer

AIM: Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) plays a regulatory role in tissue repair. In a previous study, we found that TGF-β and its receptors were expressed in gastric mucosa of patients with well-healed gastric ulcers, as demonstrated by immunohistochemistry. To further characterize the role of TGF-β and its receptors in repairing gastric ulcers, we investigated the expression patterns of TGF-β and its receptors in gastric mucosa by in situ hybridization and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).METHODS: Seventy-four patients with endoscopically proven gastric ulcers were eligible for participation in this study. All patients had routine biopsies on initial endoscopy and were then treated for 12 wk with an H2 blocker. Repeat endoscopy was then performed. There were 8 patients with poorly healed ulcers, and biopsies were taken from the margin of the residual ulcers. These tissue samples, along with biopsy of gastric mucosa near the original ulcers from 8 randomly selected patients with well-healed ulcers were examined for TGF-β and TGF-β receptor Ⅱ mRNA by RT-PCR and in situ hybridization, as well as ***: TGF-β and TGF-β receptor Ⅱ were strongly expressed in tissues from patients with well-healed *** of the 8 patients with poor healing had low or absent expression of TGF-β or TGF-β receptor Ⅱ mRNA. All cases positive by RT-PCR assay were confirmed by in situ hybridization as well as ***: It is suggested that TGF-β and its receptors are important for gastric ulcer healing. These results may have implications for further investigation of the healing process and in predicting response to therapy.

Objective:The role of intestine-derived factors in promoting liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy(PHx)are not entirely known,but bile acids(BAs)and fibroblast growth factor 15(Fgf15)that are highly expressed in the mouse ileum could promote hepatocyte ***15 strongly suppresses the synthesis of BAs,and emerging evidence indicates that Fgf15 is important for liver regeneration.

Background: Most orthopedists are right-handed. However, osteoarthritis occurs with equal frequency over both sides. Does perfect and effective arthroplasty surgery require ambidextrous motor skills? Objectives: In this study, we aimed to investigate the clinical features of arthroplasty for hip and knee joints (THR and TKR) on different sides affected by orthopedist laterality. Patients and Methods: All right-handed orthopedists performed 64 right and 52 left primary THR among 100 patients, and 115 right and 118 left primary TKR among 192 patients. Clinical and surgical features were retrospectively reviewed and analyzed. The body mass index (BMI), inner diameter of acetabular cup liners (ACD), diameter of the femoral head (FHD), diameter of the femoral stem (FSD), and the femoral neck length (FNL) were included in THR-receiving patients. The BMI, femoral component (FC) size, tibial plate (TP) size, and thickness of articular surface inserts (ASI) were included in TKR-receiving patients. Results: No significant differences were observed in ACD, FHD and FSD between patients receiving right and left THR groups (p = 0.16, 0.11, and 0.05, respectively). Similarly, there were no significant differences in FC, TP, and ASI between patients receiving right and left TKR groups (p = 0.06, 0.80, and 0.46, respectively). However, FNL in left THR group was significantly longer than that in right THR group (p = 0.01). Conclusion: This study showed that dexterity or proprioception in handedness had no affect on bone resection and thicknesses of the polyethylene in TKR and acetabular reaming and femoral canal rasping in THR. However, it did lead to differences in femoral neck resection. Right-handed orthopedists significantly tend to perform excessive femoral neck cutting or prefer the larger size of FNL when performing left side THR, while no differences occur when performing TKR.

AIM: To study Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection in relation to E-cadherin (E-cad) promoter polymorphism and hypermethylation in ***: Specimens were taken from representative cancerous lesions and adjacent non-cancerous epithelia of 67 resected GCs. Hpyloriwas detected by real-time PCR of the cagA gene from non-neoplastic epithelium.E-cad promoter polymorphism and hypermethylation were determined by restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis and methylation-specific PCR, respectively. Expression of E-cad protein was determined by ***: Hpyloriwas found in 57% of patients with GC.H pylori infection was more frequently found in tumors with the -160C/C genotype than those with the -160C/A and -160A/A genotypes (74% vs47%, P = 0.02). Hpylori infection was associated with E-cad methylation in nonneoplastic epithelium; however, no significant difference in H pylori was observed between methylated and unmethylated cancerous ***: Patients with the -160C/C genotype might require Hpyloriinfection to promote the inactivation of CDH1, suggesting that Hpylori infection might affect GC in an initial stage because polymorphism is germ *** of hypermethylation of CDH1 promoter in GC is complex, and Hpyloriinfection might affect it in an initial stage.

One configuration for realizing voltage-mode multifunction filters and another configuration for realizing current-mode multifunction filters using current feedback amplifiers (CFAs) are presented. The proposed voltage-mode circuit exhibit simultaneously lowpass and bandpass filters. The proposed current-mode circuit exhibit simultaneously lowpass, bandpass and highpass filters. The proposed circuits offer the following features: no requirements for component matching conditions;low active and passive sensitivities;employing only grounded capacitors and the ability to obtain multifunction filters from the same circuit configuration.
