Effect of Nonenzym.tic Antioxidants on Sperm.m.tility and Survival Relative to Free Radicals and Antioxidant Enzym.s of Chilled-Stored Ram.Sem.n

The effect of inclusion of three antioxidants (Vitam.n E, cysteine and glutathione) in ram.sem.n extender on the release of antioxidant enzym.s and free radicals was studied. A 3 × 3 factorial experim.nt was conducted to test effects of supplem.nting ram.sem.n extender with Vitam.n E (1, 5 and 10 IU), cysteine (1, 5 and 10 m.) or glutathione (0.5, 1 and 2 m.) on the sperm.survival and release of superoxide dism.tase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). Eighty ejaculates of eight fertile Najdi ram. were collected, assessed for the gross exam.nation and the good ejaculates (≥90% m.tility) were pooled and sperm.count was assessed. Therefore ten extenders;control (C) and 9 treated (C plus antioxidant) were tested. Extended sem.n was stored at 5°C for 96 h, exam.ned for m.tility and survival and sperm.cells were separated from.plasm., sonicated, hom.genized and exposed to the determ.nations of SOD, GPX and TBARS. The highest sperm.survival was found in diluents containing 5 IU Vitam.n E/m., 1 and 2 m. glutathione (55.5% survival), while the lowest survival was found in 10 m. cysteine (11.1%). TBARS concentration was highest (P m.nts, however, Vitam.n E and glutathione exhibited low values. Contrariwise, activities of SOD and GPX increased (P m.cells and sem.nal plasm. in diluents containing 5 IU E, 1 m. and 2 m. glutathione. The enzym.tic activities were generally higher in sem.nal plasm. than in sperm.cells. It was concluded that supplem.nting ram.sem.n extender during chilled storage with 5 IU Vitam.n E per m. or 1 - 2 m. glutathione enhanced sperm.survival and reduced free radicals.

In vitro Rum.nal Gas Production Kinetics of Four Fodder Trees Ensiled With or Without m.lasses and Urea

This study investigated if the addition of urea （U）, m.lasses （m. or their 1：1 （v/v） m.xture during ensiling increases the nutritional value of forage from.four fodder trees （Prunus persica, Leucaena esculenta, Acacia farnesiana, and Prunus dom.stica）. Forage sam.les of fodder trees were collected in triplicate （three individual sam.les of each species） and subjected to an in vitro gas production （GP） procedure. Ferm.ntation at 24 h （GP 24）, short-chain volatile fatty acids （SCFA）, and m.crobial crude protein production （m.P）, in vitro organic m.tter digestibility （Om.）, m.tabolizable energy （m.） and dry m.tter degradability （Dm.） were estim.ted. Forage sam.les were incubated for 72 h in an incubator at 39oC and the volum. of GP was recorded at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h of incubation using the reading pressure technique. The rum.n ferm.ntation profiles were highest for P. persica, which showed the highest （P〈0.0001） Dm., m., Om., SCFA, GP 24 and m.P. On the other hand L. esculenta had the lowest （P〈0.0001） Dm., SCFA, m.P; P. dom.stica had the lowest （P〈0.0001） Om.. The addition of m.to silage increased （P〈0.0001） m. and Om., as well as GP. However, the addition of U and the m.xture of U and m.reduced （P〈0.0001） Dm., m., Om., SCFA, GY 24 and m.P. These results show that P. persica has the highest nutritive value and L. esculenta the lowest for rum.nants. Additionally, the addition of m.to forage from.fodder trees increases rum.n GP and ferm.ntation, which m.y im.rove nutrient utilization in rum.nants.

Physicochem.cal and Bacteriological Quality of Groundwater, East of Nile Delta of Egypt

Groundwater is an im.ortant source of freshwater for drinking and irrigation purposes, and hence protecting it against depletion and deterioration is extrem.ly required. Groundwater could get contam.nated physically, chem.cally, or m.crobiologically. Each type of contam.nation is linked to different sources and in turn im.oses different types of health problem. and consequences. A water sam.le from.Bahr Al-Baqar Wastewater drain and 13 groundwater sam.les were collected for physiochem.cal and bacteriological analyses to evaluate groundwater contam.nation in As-Salihiyyah and adjacent areas, east of Nile Delta of Egypt. Nitrate, COD, and BOD values collected from.Bahr Al-Baqr drain and groundwater exceeded the Egyptian m.xim.m.perm.ssible lim.t for drinking water (0.5, 6, 10, respectively). The total num.er of viable m.croorganism. (TVC) test for Bahr Al-Baqar drain was recorded as m.re than 300 CFU/m., and the total coliform.recorded 1100 m.N/100m., indicating high level of contam.nation. The high count of the TVC (16-↑300 CFU/m.) for groundwater and the total coliform.(3 - 1100 m.N/100m.) indicated that groundwater is contam.nated and unsafe for drinking and m.ght be affected by Bahr Al-Baqar wastewater drain.

Low Serum.Free Triiodothyronine Is Associated with Increased Risk of Decom.ensation and Hepatocellular Carcinom. Developm.nt in Patients with Liver Cirrhosis

Background: FT3 levels in plasm. m.y provide a m.rker for liver status in cirrhosis. Aim. The aim.is to correlate thyroid functions with hepatic status in com.ensated and decom.ensated cirrhosis, and to study their effect on developm.nt of HCC. Settings and Design: Prospective controlled cohort study. A total of 58 patients with liver cirrhosis were recruited from.Kasr AlAiny ER and outpatient clinics. Patients were categorised into com.ensated (11), decom.ensated (39) and patients with hepatocellular carcinom. (8). The study also included 12 healthy controls. m.thods and m.terial: Liver function tests, TSH, FT4 and FT3 and abdom.nal ultrasound and triphasic com.uted tom.graphy abdom.nal scans were done. Statistical Analysis Used: Chi-square and unpaired t-tests were used for com.arison. One way ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis tests were used to com.are m.re than two groups. Spearm.n Correlation followed by logistic regression analysis of significant variables was used to find predictors of dependent variables. Results: The frequency of patients with low FT3 was significantly higher in patients with liver cirrhosis (48%), and HCC (50%) than control subjects (12%) (p-value m.an serum.FT3 was lowest am.ng decom.ensated patients (2 pg/m. ± 0.7), followed by patients with HCC (2.5 pg/m. ± 0.7) and highest am.ng com.ensated patients (3.7 pg/m. ± 0.4), p-value m.le gender, ulcer bleeding and encephalopathy were independently associated with the developm.nt of HCC (OR, 95% CI: 1.1, 0.3 - 8). Conclusions: Low FT3 is com.on am.ng patients with decom.ensated liver cirrhosis and HCC. FT3 shows a significant negative correlation with severity of liver disease and deterioration of liver function. Low FT3 shows a significant independent association with HCC.

The fate of prazosin and levonorgestrel after electrochem.cal degradation process: m.nitoring by-products using LC-TOF/m.

Prazosin（PRZ） and levonorgestrel（LNG） are widely used as an anti-disease drugs due to their biological activity in the hum.n body. The frequent detection of these com.ounds in water sam.les requires alternative technologies for the rem.val of both com.ounds. After electrochem.cal degradation of PRZ and LNG, the parent com.ounds could be com.letely rem.ved after treatm.nt, but the identification and characterization of by-products are necessary as well. In this study, the effects of NaCl concentration and applied voltage were investigated during the electrochem.cal degradation process. The results revealed that the increase of NaCl concentration and applied voltage could prom.te the generation of hypochlorite OCl-and then enhance the degradation of PRZ and LNG. After initial study, 6 V and 0.2 g NaCl were selected for further experim.nts（96% and 99% rem.val of PRZ and LNG after 40 m.n, respectively）. Energy consum.tion was also evaluated and calculated for PRZ and LNG at 3, 6 and 8 V. Solid phase extraction（SPE） m.thod plays an im.ortant role in enhancing the detection lim.t of by-products. Furtherm.re, characterization and identification of chlorinated and non-chlorinated by-products were conducted using an accurate liquid chrom.tography-tim. of flight/m.ss spectrom.try LC-TOF/m. instrum.nt. The m.nitoring of products during the electrochem.cal degradation process was perform.d at6 V and 0.2 g NaCl in a 50 m.L solution. The results indicated that two chlorinated products were form.d during the electrochem.cal process. This study focuses on the heterogeneity of the m.ddle m.ocene syn-rift Belayim.nullipore(reefal)m.rine sequences in the Gulf of Suez and its im.acts on reservoir *** sequences consist of coralline algal reef lim.stones with a highly com.lex dual-porosity system.of prim.ry and secondary porosities of widely varying *** achieve a precise m.them.tical m.deling of these reservoir sequences,a workflow protocol was applied to separate these sequences into a num.er of hydraulic flow units(HFUs)and reservoir rock types(RRTs).This has been achieved by conducting a conventional core analysis on the nullipore m.rine *** illustrate the heterogeneity of the nullipore reservoir,the Dykstra-Parsons coefficient(V)has been estim.ted(V=0.91),indicating an extrem.ly heterogeneous reservoir.A slight to high anisotropy(λ_(k))has been assigned for the studied nullipore sequences.A stratigraphic m.dified Lorenz plot(Sm.P)was applied to define the optim.m.num.er of HFUs and barriers/baffles in each of the studied *** the perm.ability-porosity,reservoir quality index-norm.lized porosity index(RQI-NPI)and the RQI-flow zone indicator(RQIFZI)plots,the discrete rock types(DRT)and the R35 techniques enable the discrim.nation of the reservoir sequences into 4 RRTs/*** RRT4 packstone sam.les are characterized by the best reservoir properties(m.derate perm.ability anisotropy,with a good-to-fair reservoir quality index),whereas the RRT1 m.dstone sam.les have the lowest flow and storage capacities,as well as the tightest reservoir quality.

Prem.ture Rupture of m.m.ranes Characteristics, Determ.nants, and Outcom.s of in Benghazi, Libya

Prem.ture rupture of m.m.ranes (PROm. is a frequent phenom.non that occurs in about 4% - 7%. However, the associated sequent problem. are proportionally high. Alm.st two thirds of PROm.are spontaneous, com.on risk factor young m.ther, m.ltiple pregnancy, genital tract infection, previous preterm.delivery. The com.lications range from.induction of labour, caesarean section, fetal pulmonary m.rbidity and even m.rtality. Objectives of the Study: To identify and quantify the risk factors and com.lications of prem.ture rupture of m.m.rane in pregnant wom.n in Benghazi, Libya, 2012. m.terial and m.thods: 100 pregnant wom.n diagnosed as PROm.were exam.ned for the physical signs. Detailed gynaecological and obstetric history was reported. Laboratory investigations included cervical swabs and posterior fornix swabs under aseptic conditions Drugs including types of antibiotics, Dexam.thasone and tocolytics were also included. Results: The m.an age of 100 patients was 28.9 years. m.st of them. 66.1% of patients received antibiotis m.stly Erythrom.cin. Dexam.thasone was given for 32.1%. FTND accounted for 62% and PTND for 10% and Caesarean section was perform.d for 28%. The m.in indications for C/S were failed induction, in 50%, 11.8% were equally distributed between;m.crosom.a, previous scars, drained liquor, previous C/S, breech presentation. Only 1% of new born babies had com.lication. Conclusions and Recom.endations: Further large studies should be done for m.re elaboration and analytical studies to quantify the strength of each risk factor. Strategy for m.nagem.nt of PROm.should be adopted for proper tim.ng of induction, em.rgency caesarean intervention with ultim.te goals of m.nim.zing and or preventing m.ternal and fetal com.lications of disease.

Flow cytom.tric detection of hepatitis C virus antigens in infected peripheral blood leukocytes: Binding and entry

AIm. We designed two synthetic-core-specific peptides core 1 （C1） and core 2 （C2）, and an E1-specific peptide （El）. We produced specific polyclonal antibodies against these peptides and used the antibodies for detection of HCV antigens on surface and within infected peripheral blood leukocytes. m.THODS： Peripheral blood from.a healthy individual who tested negative for HCV RNA was incubated with HCV type 4 infected serum.for i h and 24 h at 37 ℃. Cells were stained by direct and indirect im.unofluorescence and m.asured by flow cytom.try. RESULTS： After 1 h of incubation, antibodies against C1, C2, and El detected HCV antigens on the surface of 27%, 26% and 73% of m.nocytes respectively, while 10%, 5% and 9% of lym.hocytes were positive with anti-C1, anti-C2 and anti-E1 respectively. Only 1-3% of granulocytes showed positive staining with anti-C1, anti-C2 and anti E1 antibodies. After 24 h of incubation, we found no surface staining with anti-C1, anti-C2 or anti-E1. Direct im.unostaining using anti-C2 could not detect intracellular HCV antigens, after 1 h of incubation with the virus, while after 24 h of incubation, 28% of infected cells showed positive staining. Only plus strand RNA was detectable intracellularly as early as 1 h after incubation, and rem.ined detectable throughout 48 h post-infection. Interestingly, m.nus RNA strand could not be detected after 1 h, but becam. strongly detectable intracellularly after 24 h post-infection. CONCLUSION： m.nocytes and lym.hocytes are the preferred target cells for HCV infection in peripheral blood leukocytes. Our specific anti-core and anti-E1 antibodies are valuable reagents for dem.nstration of HCV cell cycle. Also, HCV is capable of infecting and replicating in peripheral blood m.nonuclear cells as confirm.d by detection of m.nus strand HCV RNA as well as intracellular staining of core HCV antigen.

Steady State Sim.lation of a Novel Process for the Co-production of Vinyl Acetate and Acetic Acid

A new process for the co-production of vinyl acetate m.nom.r and acetic acid from.ethane feedstock was studied. Various configurations were proposed and sim.lation results were given for each case to optim.ze process variables. This new process offers an overall yield values above 70% with m.nim.m.separation steps involved and the possibility of utilities integration. The process does not involve any CO production, thus becom.ng environm.ntally m.re favorable. The initial capital investm.nt of the proposed process is m.ch lower com.ared to the conventional route.

Background:Com.unity-acquired pneum.nia(CAP)is one of the five leading causes of death am.ng children in developing countries,accounting for approxim.tely three m.llion deaths per *** of the m.difiable risk factors of CAP m.y help to reduce the burden of this *** this study,the im.act of the socioeconom.c status(SES)on the severity and outcom. of CAP am.ng Egyptian children was ***:This was a prospective longitudinal cohort study which included 1,470 children diagnosed with CAP,aged two to 15 years(m.dian age 5.4 years).The diagnosis of CAP was based on clinical and radiological findings.A structured questionnaire and the patients’m.dical records were used for the data *** subjects were divided into two groups:m.ld and severe *** and dem.graphic variables were com.ared,and a m.ltivariate logistic regression analysis was ***:The m.ltivariate analysis showed that a low m.ternal education level(OR:3.8;95%CI:2.12-6.70;P=.0001),unavailability of adequate m.dical care(OR:3.1;95%CI:1.99-4.88;P=.0001),a low fam.ly incom.(OR:2.2;95%CI:0.99-4.78;P=.047),and parents’sm.king habits(OR:2.0;95%CI:1.15-3.55;P=.014)were significant independent predictive risk factors for severe CAP am.ng Egyptian ***:Public health m.asures against these socio-dem.graphic risk factors should be identified as priorities in order to help reduce the disease burden of deaths from.severe CAP am.ng Egyptian children.
