Dieback intensity but not functional and taxonomic diversity indices predict forest productivity in different management conditions: Evidence from a semi-arid oak forest ecosystem

The relationships between different aspects of diversity(taxonomic,structural and functional)and the aboveground biomass(AGB)as a major component of global carbon balance have been studied extensively but rarely under the simultaneous influence of forest dieback and *** this study,we investigate the relationships between taxonomic,functional and structural diversity of woody species(trees and shrubs)and AGB along a gradient of dieback intensity(low,moderate,high and no dieback as control)under two contrasted management conditions(protection by central government *** management by natives)in a semi-arid oak(Quereus brantii Lindl.)forest *** was estimated and taxonomic diversity,community weighted average(CWM)and functional divergence indices were *** found that the aerial biomass was significantly higher in the intensively used area(14.57(±1.60)t/hm^(2))than in the protected area(8.70(±1.05)t/hm^(2))due to persistence of some large trees but with decreasing values along the dieback intensity gradient in both *** of height(H),leaf nitrogen content(LNC)and leaf dry matter content(LDMC)were also higher in the traditional managed area than in the protected *** contrast,in the protected area,the woody species diversity was higher and the inter-specific competition was more intense,explaining a reduced H,biomass and *** to the results of CWM,none of the functional diversity traits(FDvar)was affected by dieback intensity and only FDvar values of LNC,leaf phosphorus content(LPC)and LDMC were influenced by *** also found significantly positive linear relationships of AGB with CWM and FDvar indices in the protected area,and with taxonomic and structural diversity indices in the traditional managed *** results emphasize that along a dieback intensity gradient,the leaf functional traits are efficient predictors in estimating the AGB in protected forests,while taxonomic and structural indices provide bett

Role of Mediterranean diet, tropical vegetables rich in antioxidants, and sunlight exposure in blindness, cataract and glaucoma among African type 2 diabetics

AIM: To assess whether regular Mediterranean diet and regular intake of vegetables may reduce the risk of blindness, cataract, and glaucoma in these type 2 diabetics. · METHODS: A cross-sectional design was carried out among known black diabetics admitted at the diabetic clinics of Kinshasa, between October 2008 and March 2009. The Mediterranean-style dietary score (MSDPS) was used to characterize a Mediterranean-style dietary pattern in the study population using the Harvard semi quantitative FFQ adapted for Africa. · RESULTS: Five hundred Type 2 diabetic patients were included in this study (48% of males; 40% aged ≥60 years). There was a significant association between blindness, cataract and aging; between blindness (P <0.05), cataract (P<0.05), glaucoma (P <0.05), and physical inactivity; between blindness (P<0.05), cataract (P <0.0001), glaucoma (P <0.01) and high SES, and a very significant association between blindness (P <0.0001), cataract (P <0.0001), glaucoma (P <0.0001) and exposure to sunlight. There was also a significant association between blindness, glaucoma, and male sex. Regular intake of Mediterranean diet, Brassica Rapa, beans, Abelmoschus, Musa acuminata reduced significantly the risk of blindness, cataract and glaucoma. · CONCLUSION: Regular intake of Mediterranean diet, Brassica Rapa, beans, Abelmoschus, and Musa acuminata may significantly reduce the risk of blindness or its major causes among type 2 diabetes mellitus in Africa.

Cancer Survivors’ Experience of Health-Related Quality of Life Six to Eight Years after Diagnosis—A Qualitative Study

Background: Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is affected for many years following cancer treatment. With an increasing number of long-term cancer survivors, HRQOL will be a key concern in the future. There is a lack of qualitative studies investigating long-term cancer survivors’ needs and experience of late effects and HRQOL. Objective: The aim of this sub-study is to describe cancer survivors’ own experience of late effects affecting HRQOL six to eight years after diagnosis. Methods: We used a qualitative methodology with semi-structured focus group interviews to gain an in-depth understanding of participants’ experience of their HRQOL. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: All of the participants reported late effects at some point after the treatment. Some of the experienced late effects had improved over the years, while the late effects mentioned in this article were still prominent six to eight years after the diagnosis. They described, among others, late effects such as reduced physical strength, cognitive difficulties, lack of energy and increased sensitivity. The participants described the late effects as bearable, but still affecting their HRQOL by limiting their activity level, their ability to work and their social interactions. Conclusions: Six to eight years post-treatment, cancer survivors still experienced physical and cognitive late effects affecting their HRQOL. The findings indicate that some late effects affect HRQOL for a long time. To prepare cancer survivors for post-treatment life and to optimize their HRQOL, they need information concerning potential late effects before, during and after cancer treatment, as well as support services and follow-up in the municipalities.

Diagnostic and Prognostic Value of Nuclear Factor Kappa-B in Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma in Egyptian Patients with Hepatitis C Virus Genotype 4

Background: Members of the NFκB [p65] family have potential diagnostic and prognostic role in various inflammatory diseases and Lymphomas. Aim: We studied NFκB [p65] in paraffin blocks of hepatitis-C-virus [HCV] positive genotype-4 and HCV negative diffuse large B-cell lymphoma [DLBCL] patients, aiming at identification of its differential expression and prognosis in DLBCL and its subtypes;GCB and ABC. This is to establish its relation to HCV infection and its role in lymphogenesis. Besides assessing the role of new directly acting antiviral drugs [Sofusbuvir/Ledipasvir] concomitantly administered to [CHOP] combination in HCV positive DLBCL. Subjects and Methods: NFκB [p65] expression was assessed using Anti-NFκB [p65] antibody semi-quantitative technique in 30 newly diagnosed DLBCL patients [HCV positive [n = 15], HCV negative [n = 15]. Results: NFκB [p65] expression was higher in the HCV positive DLBCL patients than their HCV negative counterpart, with a positive correlation with the viral load [r = 0.536, p = 0.088]. NFκB [p65] expression was significantly more frequently detected in the ABC subtype than GCB subtype [p = 0.04]. Patients who expressed NFκB [p65] had higher incidence of extranodal involvement, advanced stages, higher LDH levels and IPI score. Besides, the expression of NFκB [P65] revealed an inferior overall response [OR] [p = 0.044]. Higher complete response rates to CHOP concomitantly with antiviral [ledipasvir/sofosbuvir] were encountered in the HCV positive group. In HCV positive group, NFκB [P65] displayed a positive relationship with the viral load and liver enzymes [p = 0.04], besides an inverse relation with serum albumin. This raises the possibility that NFκB [p65] expression is suggestive of the hepatic necro-inflammation in HCV patients. The ABC group presented more in advanced stages than GCB. Effect of Temperature on I-V Characteristic for ZnO/CuO

Research on nonmaterials has become increasingly popular because of their unique physical, chemical, optical and catalytic properties compared to their bulk counterparts. Therefore, many efforts have been made to synthesize multidimensional nanostructures for new and efficient nanodevices. Among those materials, zinc oxide (ZnO) has gained substantial attention owing to many outstanding properties. ZnO besides its wide band gap of 3.34 eV exhibits a relatively large excitons binding energy (60 meV) at room temperature which is attractive for optoelectronic applications. Likewise, cupric oxide (CuO) has a narrow band gap of 1.2 eV and a variety of chemo-physical properties that are attractive in many fields. Moreover, composite nanostructures of these two oxides (CuO/ZnO) may pave the way for various new applications. So in this thesis, eight samples of CuO/ZnO junction were synthesized and exposed to temperatures 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120 and 130. The electrical properties of Schottky diode junctions were analyzed by I-V measurements under the influence of direct solar radiation and, lag of radiation (darkness) which shows the semi-logarithmic I-V characteristic curve of the fabricated photodiodes. Also energy band gap was estimated and the morphology and particle sizes of the as-prepared sample were determined by SEM. The SEM images of ZnO + CuO sample films were annealed at 60°C to 130°C step 10.

Sugarcane bacilliform viruses（SCBV;genus Badnavirus;family Caulimoviridae） are a threat to the global exchange of sugarcane germplasm.A total of 280 sugarcane- leaf tissue samples collected from six provinces in China,25 from three states in the USA and five from Queensland,Australia were tested for the presence of SCBV by polymerase chain reaction（PCR） using newly designed degenerate primers targeting a 720 base pair（bp） fragment of the reverse transcriptase/ribonuclease H（RT/RNAse H） genomic *** amplified fragments from 94 SCBV-positive samples were then cloned,sequenced and analyzed for their genetic *** results revealed considerable haplotype diversity within individual SCBV *** analyses showed weak signatures of recombination among some of the SCBV *** analysis revealed the segregation of global SCBV isolates into three major monophyletic clades encompassing 18 subgroups,including five previously undescribed subgroups named as SCBV-N *** genetic analysis data indicated that relatively low levels of genetic exchange have occurred between SCBV populations from different sugarcane-producing regions of the *** with the new set of degenerate SCBV-specific primers designed in this study,our results will advance the understanding of SCBV population structure in a semi-perennial host plant and aid the screening of global sugarcane germplasm to minimize the spread of genetic variants of the virus via contaminated plant materials.
