Copper nanoparticles were impregnated onto oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) powders via in-situ sol-gel method. The impregnation and interfacial interaction of copper nanoparticles with EFB were analysed by fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The interaction of copper nanoparticles with the surface functional groups of EFB powders was identified by FTIR analysis. The peak shift of O-H and C-O functional groups indicated the interaction between EFB and copper nanoparticles. Besides that, XRD and EDX analysis confirmed the formation of copper nanoparticles on EFB powder. Due to the copper impregnation, the crystallinity of the EFB was increased as shown by XRD. The particles size of nanoparticles was analysed via TEM and AFM where the sizes were in the range of 60 - 100 nm. These findings strongly suggest that, copper nanoparticles impregnated EFB powders can be synthesized via in- situ sol gel method.

Background: The purpose of the present study is to investigate the expression levels of STAT3, pSTAT3, MMP-7 and VEGF in colorectal adenocarcinoma, and also to determine association with the clinico-pathological parameters and?co-expression of these genes. Methods: An immunohistochemical method was used to evaluate the expression of MMP-7 and VEGF genes in 93 archival tissues whereas STAT3 and pSTAT3 expression was determined in 75 cases. Results: Overexpression of STAT3 was detected in 26.7% (20/75), pSTAT3 in 13.4% (10/75), MMP-7 in 38.8% (36/93) and VEGF in 59.2% (55/93) of the colorectal carcinomas. STAT3, MMP-7 and VEGF immunopositivity were significantly correlated with poorly-differentiated tumors (P = 0.004;P = 0.03;P = 0.002, respectively) but not with other parameters. However, pSTAT3 immunostaining was not significantly associated with the clinico-pathological characteristics. Significant relationship was noted between overexpression of pSTAT3 and STAT3 (P < 0.001), pSTAT3 and VEGF (P = 0.044), pSTAT3 and MMP-7 (P = 0.003), and STAT3 and VEGF (P = 0.037) but marginal association was detected between STAT3 and MMP-7 (P = 0.057), and MMP-7 and VEGF (P = 0.052). Conclusion:?Our data suggest that expression of these genes?may have an important role in tumor dedifferentiation and?may be useful as indicators of biologic aggressiveness. Co-expression of the biomarkers by cancer cells?may have important implications in colorectal cancer biology and?could be useful biological markers of the malignant phenotype.

Herein we report an electrochemical DNA biosensor for the rapid detection of sequence (5’ AAT GGA TTT ATC TGC TCT TCG 3’) specific for the breast cancer 1 (BRCA1) gene. The proposed electrochemical genosensor is based on short oligonucleotide DNA probe immobilized onto zinc oxide nanowires (ZnONWs) chemically synthesized onto gold electrode via hydrothermal technique. The morphology studies of the ZnONWs, performed by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), showed that the ZnO nanowires are uniform, highly dense and oriented perpendicularly to the substrate. Recognition event between the DNA probe and the target was investigated by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) in 0.1 M acetate buffer solution (abS), pH 7.00;as a result of the hybridization, an oxidation signal was observed at +0.8 V. The influences of pH, target concentration, and non-complimentary DNA on biosensor performance were examined. The proposed DNA biosensor has the ability to detect the target sequence in the range of concentration between 10.0 and 100.0 μM with a detection limit of 3.32 μM. The experimental results demonstrated that the prepared ZnONWs/Au electrodes are suitable platform for the immobilization of DNA.

Purpose: Glowacki and Mulliken (1982) described vascular lesions as hemangiomas and vascular malformations. Hemangiomas usually demonstrate endothelial hyperplasia and enlarge by cellular proliferation and usually appear in early infancy. They grow rapidly initially and then become stabilized. On the other hand, vascular malformations do not demonstrate cellular hyperplasia and they are always present at birth. They are collections of abnormal vessels with normal endothelium and mast cell count and they grow in proportion to body growth and never regress spontaneously. Methods:20 patients were seen at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre between July 2001 to January 2008 with vascular lesions in the oral cavity. There were 15 males and 5 females giving male: female ratio of 3:1. The age range was between l month old to 69 years old (mean age of 20.7). In relation to racial distribution, there were l0 Malays, 5 Indians and 5 Chinese patients. The vascular lesions involved the upper and lower lips including the commisures, buccal mucosa and the cheek, tongue, the mandible and maxilla. 14 patients were diagnosed with hemangioma (two cases of intraosseous hemangioma); 5 with vascular malformations [3 with venous malformations and 2 high flow arteriovenous malformations] and l patient with superficial angiomyxoma. 12 patients had treatment in the form of excision, serial excisions and embolization and excision; 4 patients did not have any active intervention as they were asymptomatic and 4 patients refused treatment. 2 patients presented with emergency condition i.e profused bleeding prior to diagnosis and they were both diagnosed with intmosseous hemangioma. This study was undertaken to determine the bending strength properties of off-cut Yellow Meranti wood by applying the finger jointed techniques. The finger orientations that were used in this study are vertical and horizontal finger orientation. Specimens were bonded with PVAc (polyvinyl acetate). The bending strength properties were determined by the three point and four point bending test method. The results show that vertical finger orientation has the higher mean of modulus of rupture and the modulus of elasticity value of 24.49 MPa (28.91 MPa) and 8,814 MPa (11,668 MPa) respectively. However, the tested specimen properties did not meet the minimum strength of the solid (control) specimens.

This pioneering study investigates the seventy Bruneian corporate customers" adoption intentions towards using the mobile services. The study uses and validates the VAM (value-based adoption model) for investigating mobile service in different geographical setting contrary to the original study for Mobile Internet. The study combines four external variables such as perceived usefulness, perceived enjoyment, technicality and perceived fee with perceived value in predicting the adoption intentions of using mobile services. The study results indicate that only perceived usefulness is significant predictor of perceived values which are significant indicator of adoption intentions of using mobile services. Based on the results, some recommendations are made for the managerial implications.

Objective:To develop and evaluate predictive models by quantifying warning signs prior to the development of severe ***:A retrospective cohort study was conducted in which the total number of warning signs each day was compared between dengue with warning signs and severe *** logistic regression with forward likelihood ratio method was employed to achieve the best fit models for the prediction of severe *** models were also being explored by adding diarrhoea and removing *** operating characteristics were then used in these best fit models to identify suitable cut-off probability values derived from the equation of the ***:Median age of patients was 26 years old(interquartile range was 15 years)and 65.3%(1110)were *** with total number of warning signs at day one of illness(model T1)and age with total number of warning signs at day two of illness(model T2)were identified as the best fit *** best probability cut-offs for model T1 was 0.0506 with 10.1%positive predictive value,96.4%negative predictive value,99.4%sensitivity,1.8%specificity;for model T2 was 0.0503 with 10.2%positive predictive value,96.4%negative predictive value,99.4%sensitivity,1.8%***:The models developed in this study might not reduce the burden *** may use the models but the models must be re-validated in their clinical settings as the effect size might ***,the risk and benefit in selecting the cut-off values should be evaluated before implementing such models.
