Effect of hand hygiene intervention on the absenteeism of pre-school children in Klang Valley,Malaysia:a quasi-experimental study

Background Absenteeism amongst pre-school children is often due to illnesses such as hand,foot,and mouth disease,acute gastroenteritis,cold and flu,which are easily spread amongst *** is because of weak immunity and lack of knowledge on proper hand *** quasi-experimental study assessed the efficacy of an intervention consisting of a hand hygiene education programme,along with digital tools in bringing about a change in behaviour and health conditions amongst pre-school children in Klang Valley,*** A total of 377 school children,male and female,aged 5–6 years old,participated and were assigned to either the intervention or a control *** the 2 months intervention period,children in the test group were trained on proper hand hygiene practices and techniques with the aid of the interactive android-based *** numbers of absent days of all the children were recorded for 2 months before the intervention and during the *** In the test group,there was a 25%increase in the total number of absent days from the pre-intervention period to the intervention period,a much lesser increment observed as compared to that of control group in which the increase was much higher at 89%.Results showed a significant difference(P<0·05)between the absenteeism rates for the test and control group during the intervention *** These results suggest that proper education and intervention increase hand hygiene compliance,which may help decrease school absenteeism due to illness;however,a longer study duration may be necessary to evaluate the benefit further.

Diabetes mellitus is a complicated disease characterized by a complex interplay of genetic,epigenetic,and environmental *** is one of the world's fastestgrowing diseases,with 783 million adults expected to be affected by *** macrovascular consequences(cerebrovascular disease,cardiovascular disease,and peripheral vascular disease)and microvascular complications(like retinopathy,nephropathy,and neuropathy)increase mortality,blindness,kidney failure,and overall quality of life in individuals with *** risk factors and glycemic management alone cannot predict the development of vascular problems;multiple genetic investigations have revealed a clear hereditary component to both diabetes and its related *** the twenty-first century,technological advancements(genome-wide association studies,nextgeneration sequencing,and exome-sequencing)have led to the identification of genetic variants associated with diabetes,however,these variants can only explain a small proportion of the total heritability of the *** this review,we address some of the likely explanations for this"missing heritability",for diabetes such as the significance of uncommon variants,gene-environment interactions,and *** discoveries clinical value,management of diabetes,and future research directions are also discussed.

This study focused on the encapsulation of vancomycin(VAN) into liposomes coated with a red blood cell membrane with a targeting ligand, daptomycin–polyethylene glycol–1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine, formed by conjugation of DAPT and Nhydroxysuccinimidyl-polyethylene glycol-1,*** formulation is capable of providing controlled and targeted drug delivery to the bacterial cytoplasm. We performed MALDI-TOF, NMR and FTIR analyses to confirm the conjugation of the targeting ligand via the formation of amide bonds. Approximately 45% of VAN could be loaded into the aqueous cores, whereas 90% DAPT was detected using UV–vis spectrophotometry. In comparison to free drugs, the formulations controlled the release of drugs for > 72 h. Additionally, as demonstrated using CLSM and flow cytometry, the resulting formulation was capable of evading detection by macrophage cells. In comparison to free drugs, red blood cell membrane–DAPT–VAN liposomes, DAPT liposomes, and VAN liposomes reduced the MIC and significantly increased bacterial permeability, resulting in > 80% bacterial death within 4 h. Cytotoxicity tests were performed in vitro and in vivo on mammalian cells,in addition to hemolytic activity tests in human erythrocytes, wherein drugs loaded into the liposomes and RBCDVL exhibited low toxicity. Thus, the findings of this study provide insight about a dual antibiotic targeting strategy that utilizes liposomes and red blood cell membranes to deliver targeted drugs against MRSA.

In vivo hypoglycemic investigation, antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic potentials of Pereskia bleo Kunth. in normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

Objective: To elucidate the in vivo hypoglycemic capability, antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic activities of Pereskia bleo(Kunth) leaves extracts and bioactive fraction. Methods: The various solvent extracts of Pereskia bleo were investigated for the hypoglycemic and antihyperglycemic activities using a relevant in vivo normal rat model and streptozotocininduced diabetic rat model with glibenclamide and metformin utilized as positive controls. The effects of the most potent extract and its bioactive fraction on the insulin level, lipid profile and body weight of the diabetic rats were also analyzed. Results: All the extracts showed no hypoglycemic effect while petroleum ether, chloroform and aqueous extracts demonstrated significant(P<0.05) reduction in blood sugar level in the intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test. Aqueous extract and aqueous fraction significantly(P<0.05) reduced the blood glucose level in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats as early as day 6 compared to the diabetic control as well as significantly restored the serum insulin of diabetic rats. Moreover, the aqueous extract and aqueous fraction disclosed a significant(P<0.05) reduction in total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein levels. An elevation in high-density lipoprotein as well as improved body weight loss of the diabetic rats were also observed. Conclusions: In summary, Pereskia bleo appears effective in the management of diabetes and correlated impairments arising from high blood sugar level. Further studies will possibly bring about the discovery of effective and secure plant derived antidiabetic drugs.

Genetic diversity in eggplant(Solanum melongena L.)germplasm from three secondary geographical origins of diversity using SSR markers

Indo-Burmese region was the primary center of eggplant diversity from where the crop extended to several secondary origins of *** this study,the genetic diversity among fifty-six eggplant accessions collected from three countries was assessed using sixteen polymorphic SSR markers to determine suitable parents for heterotic *** estimation of genetic diversity among the population of three countries(Bangladesh,Malaysia,and Thailand)varied from 0.57 to 0.74,with Shannon’s index value of *** mean value of expected heterozygosity and Nei’s index was 0.49,with an average PIC value of 0.83.A dendrogram was constructed based on UPGMA(unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean),and the dendrogram categorized all accessions into six *** AMOVA(analysis of molecular variance)revealed a 77%total variation within the population from three different countries and 23%total variation among the *** result revealed a high genetic differentiation among the eggplant germplasms while the accessions that are farther from each other show a high level of diversity;thus,they can be recommended as parental in breeding ***,accessions,EB12,ET11,ET13,ET15,ET16,and ET17 could be crossed with accessions EM3,EB34,and EB3 for improvement in the future breeding program.

Assessing the Potential of Mangrove Educotourism to Marine Protected Area: A Case of Tioman and Tulai Islands, Pahang, Malaysia

Mangroves composition and species are richly diverse in Tioman and Tulai Island. A total of 23 mangrove species have been found consisting of exclusive and non-exclusive species in Kg. Juara, Kg. Nipah, Kg. Paya, Kg. Genting and Tulai Island. The abundance mangrove species are Rhizophora X lamarckii, Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata and Brugueira gymnorrhiza. From supervised classification, total of 59.90 hectares mangrove covers have been identified in both islands, with 86.49% in Tioman Island (52.76 hectares) and 13.51% in Tulai Island (7.14 hectares). A new hybrid species has been found (Rhizophora X lamarckii) dominated in Tulai Island, combination between Rhizophora stylosa and Rhizophora apiculata. At the mean time only mangrove area in Teluk Bakau, Tulai Island is considered as the focal destination of tourists to the area. However, other mangrove areas in Tioman Island are also potential to be promoted as tourist destination areas. Although the mangrove area is only a part of the scenery, its presence obviously enhances tourist attraction. The basic facilities such as information counter, walking trails, garbage boxes and toilets are considered necessary. The main information panel and site map should be provided on the mangrove sites. Boardwalks may be constructed for visitor to access the mangrove area without destroying the root system and stand. The actual site of these facilities and on-site information guides should be strategically placed in order to provide beneficial information and as well as to sustain the biophysical stability of the sites. Since mangroves provide various important functions in nature, it hopes that the mangrove educotourism activity will influence the people and community’s attitudes to the environment, conservation and sustainable development in a very positive way.

This paper presents the high gain, low noise Cascode LNA with RF amplifier at 5.8GHz using T-matching network applicable for WIMAX application. The Cascode LNA uses FHX76LP Low Noise SuperHEMT FET and RF amplifier use EPA018A. The LNA designed used T-matching network consisting of lump element reactive element at the input and the output terminal. The Cascode LNA with RF amplifier produced gain of 35.5 dB and noise figure （NF） at 1.4dB. The input reflection （S11） and output return loss （S22 ） are -12.4dB and -12.3dB respectively. The bandwidth of the amplifier is more than 1.2 GHz. The input sensitivity is compliant with the IEEE 802.16 standards.
