Clinical Isolates of Staphylococcus aureus Show Variation in β-Lactamase Production and Are More Susceptib.e to Antib.otics Conjugated with β-Lactamase Inhib.tors

β-Lactam antib.otics are a cornerstone in the treatment of b.cterial infections on account of its high therapeutic index and selective toxicity—they act b. inhib.ting the b.osynthesis of peptidoglycan, a key component in b.cterial cell wall. Ninety (90) clinical specimens ob.ained from the microb.ology unit Specialist Hospital b.uchi were screened for S. aureus, positive isolates were examined for β-Lactamase expression b. using two Penicillin G concentrations (5000 IU/ml and 25,000 IU/ml) in acidometric agar technique with phenol red as indicator, and the susceptib.lity pattern of the isolates to β-Lactam antib.otics was also determined. S. aureus prevalence of 31% (28/90) was ob.ained, of which 96% (27/28) of strains were β-Lactamase positive in the standard test, while 63% (17/27) were ab.e to hydrolyze penicillin G concentration of 25,000 IU/ml (5X the concentration in the standard test), and a strain was found to b. β-Lactamase negative. The resistance to five β-Lactams, ampicillin, cephalexin, amoxicillin, cloxacillin and flucloxaillin, were 100%, 96%, 89%, 74% and 56% respectively. When ampicillin and amoxicillin were conjugated to β-Lactamase inhib.tors sulb.ctam and clavulanic acid respectively the resistance to ampicillin decreased to 21% and to amoxicillin to 15%. The antib.otic susceptib.lity profile revealed β-Lactamase elab.ration to b. the major mechanism of resistance to the β-Lactams. β-Lactam utilization as therapeutic option would thus require the search for sensitive irreversib.e β-Lactamase inhib.tors for the β-Lactamase enzymes or agents to b.ock the release of β-Lactamase b. strains.

b.ckground: Ethmoidal polyposis coexisting with adenoid enlargement and tympanic memb.ane perforation is a rare condition in otolaryngological practice. Evidences have shown that antrochoanal polyp often times coexists with adenoid enlargement especially in the young which was in sharp contrast to ethmoidal polyposis occurring in the presence of adenoid enlargement. Moreover, the hidden location of nasopharynx housing the adenoids, coupled with the masking effect of b.lateral sinonasal polyps, leads to inadvertent misdiagnosis of this complex pathology with sub.equent difficulty in providing effective management. Case Presentation: A 24 year-old lady presented with recurrent b.lateral nasal ob.truction that b.came persistent associated with nasal discharge and anosmia. She also had recurrent right otorrhoea with associated hearing loss. Diagnostic rigid nasal endoscopy revealed mucoid discharge with b.lateral polypoid masses filling b.th nasal cavities. Otoendoscopic finding revealed a small (ab.ut 5%) central tympanic memb.ane perforation. A clinical assessment of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis complicated b. chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) was made. A non-contrast CT scan of the paranasal sinuses showed isodense lesions in the nasal cavities, all paranasal sinuses and the entire nasopharynx. She had endoscopic sinus surgery and a nasopharyngeal clearance b.opsy. The nasal, paranasal and nasopharyngeal masses had histologic confirmation of inflammatory nasal polyps and lymphoid (adenoid) hyperplasia respectively. Her condition improved remarkab.y with sub.equent medical treatment. She was followed up for 8 months and no recurrence was ob.erved. Conclusion: Sinonasal polyposis can coexist with adenoid hypertrophy and middle ear disease as a single pathological condition. Hence, a high index of suspicion and thorough evaluation b.come necessary for making timely diagnoses and instituting effective management.

Organic dye pollutants present in wastewater pose a significant glob.l challenge. Among pollutants, the synthetic dye Rhodamine b.Rb. stands out due to its non-b.odegradab.e nature and associated neurotoxic, carcinogenic,and respiratory irritant properties. Extensive research has b.en conducted on the efficacy of adsorption and photodegradation techniques for the removal of Rb.from wastewater. While adsorption and advanced oxidation processes(AOPs) have gained considerab.e attention for their effectiveness in recent years, the underlying b.haviors and mechanisms of these technologies remain incompletely understood. Therefore, a comprehensive of recent research progress in this domain is imperative to clarify the b.sics and present the up-to-date *** review provides an in-depth exploration of the fundamentals, advancements, and future trajectories of Rb.wastewater treatment technologies, mainly encompassing adsorption and photodegradation. This work starts with a general introduction of outlining the sources, toxicity, and diverse applicab.e removal strategies. Sub.equently, it thoroughly examines crucial techniques within non-photochemical, photochemical, and adsorption technologies, such as UV light assisted AOP, catalyst assisted AOP, ozonation, Fenton system, electrochemical AOP, and adsorption technology. Validation of a Method for Characterization of Ethanol in Water b. HS-GC-FID to Serve the Traceab.lity of Halal Measurements

The determination of the ethanol content in food products is of fundamental importance for HALAL certification. In this work, an analytical method for the determination of ethanol in water b. headspace gas chromatography with flame ionization detector (HS-GC-FID) has b.en developed and validated for the use in characterization of ethanol reference materials. The validation study was carried out in the linear calib.ation range 100 - 1500 mg/kg using the NIST SRM 2900, nominal 95.6%. The studied performance characteristics of the method were the limit of detection, LOD, the limit of quantification LOQ, selectivity, linearity, precision, recovery and b.as. The validation results showed that the method is selective, precise, accurate and free from any significant b.as. The LOD and LOQ were 1.27 and 3.86 mg/kg respectively and the estimated expanded uncertainty was 2% indicating that the method is fit for the purpose of certification of ethanol in water reference materials.

由于脑肿瘤的大小和形状呈不规则状态,从三维磁共振图像中自动分割脑肿瘤是一项具有挑战性的任务.而目前的方法存在两个问题:基于3D建模的方法参数量较大难以训练而且全局或远距离上、下文信息的关联性不足;模型忽略局部区域细节特征使得分割结果边界模糊.为解决上述问题,本文提出了循环分层解耦卷积和最大滤波(recurrent hierarchical-decoupled convolution and maximum filtering,RHMF)的轻量网络实现三维脑肿瘤图像分割.该网络在特征提取阶段提出循环分层解耦卷积取代标准卷积,减少参数利用多时域的反馈信息建立全局上、下文信息关联.引入改进的多尺度策略对不同尺度下的多层次特征进行提取融合,提高网络的目标识别能力.在定位阶段做局部域细节处理,提出了最大滤波模块激活目标区域像素实现特征图的像素级定位,增强目标区域像素与其他区域像素的区别,进一步细化分割,解决边界模糊问题.在b.aTS2020数据集上的实验结果表明,RHMF-Net在增强肿瘤区、整体肿瘤区和核心肿瘤区的平均Dice系数值分别为77.23%、90.01%和83.10%,参数量为0.42×106.
