Estimation of meteorological drought indices based on AgMERRA precipitation data and station-observed precipitation data

Meteorological drought is a natural hazard that can occur under all climatic regimes. Monitoring the drought is a vital and important part of predicting and analyzing drought impacts. Because no single index can represent all facets of meteorological drought, we took a multi-index approach for drought monitoring in this study. We assessed the ability of eight precipitation-based drought indices（SPI（Standardized Precipitation Index）, PNI（Percent of Normal Index）, DI（Deciles index）, EDI（Effective drought index）, CZI（China-Z index）, MCZI（Modified CZI）, RAI（Rainfall Anomaly Index）, and ZSI（Z-score Index）） calculated from the station-observed precipitation data and the Ag MERRA gridded precipitation data to assess historical drought events during the period 1987–2010 for the Kashafrood Basin of Iran. We also presented the Degree of Dryness Index（DDI） for comparing the intensities of different drought categories in each year of the study period（1987–2010）. In general, the correlations among drought indices calculated from the Ag MERRA precipitation data were higher than those derived from the station-observed precipitation data. All indices indicated the most severe droughts for the study period occurred in 2001 and 2008. Regardless of data input source, SPI, PNI, and DI were highly inter-correlated（R^2=0.99）. Furthermore, the higher correlations（R^2=0.99） were also found between CZI and MCZI, and between ZSI and RAI. All indices were able to track drought intensity, but EDI and RAI showed higher DDI values compared with the other indices. Based on the strong correlation among drought indices derived from the Ag MERRA precipitation data and from the station-observed precipitation data, we suggest that the Ag MERRA precipitation data can be accepted to fill the gaps existed in the station-observed precipitation data in future studies in Iran. In addition, if tested by station-observed precipitation data, the Ag MERRA precipitation data may be used for the data-lacking area

Sedimentary Environment and Relative Sea Level Changes of the Asmari Formation Deposited in Lurestan Basin, Southwest of Zagros

Asmari Formation is deposited in the Zagros Foreland basin during Oligo-Miocene time. In the presented research, Sheykh Makan (north of Kabir-Kuh Anticline) section located at Lurestan Basin is studied to achieve an understanding of facies changes, paleoenvironment and also sequence stratigraphic framework (relative sea level changes) of the Asmari Formation. Results of this study revealed that 15 microfacies grouped to four facies belts named as tidal flat, lagoon, barrier and open marine are the main constituents. A homoclinal ramp is determined as the depositional setting of the Asmari Formation. In Sheykh Makan Section, studied interval contains three third-order sequences aging oligmiocene. It overlies gradually shaly Pabdeh Formation and is overlain by evaporitic Gachsaran Formatin.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography outcome from a single referral center in Iran

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreato- graphy (ERCP) is the first choice for diagnostic evaluation of the pancreatic and biliary tree and can be accompanied by a high diagnostic sensitivity and a poor therapeutic outcome. In the current study, we described our experiences in the indications, findings, and technical success of ERCP in a sample of the Iranian population admitted to a referral center in Iran. METHODS: In a retrospective review database-based study, 780 patients (393 males and 387 females; mean age 57.5 years) who had undergone diagnostic and therapeutic ERCP with the primary diagnosis of hepatobiliary disorder between 2006 and 2008 at Taleghani Hospital in Tehran were reviewed. The key data were demographic characteristics, clinical information, laboratory parameters, as well as post-ERCP complications. RESULTS: A history of cholecystectomy was found in about one-third (36.3%) of participants and 80 (10.3%) out of 780 patients had a previous history of biliary stone. A minority (1.4%) of the patients suffered from hepatobiliary carcinomas, and 11 patients had cirrhosis. The most common clinical manifestations in the patients undergoing diagnostic ERCP were icterus (47.3%), weight loss (31.2%), and dark urine (26.9%). Selective biliary cannulation was technically successful in 87.0% of the patients; however, cannulation failed in 13.0%. The most frequent final diagnosis of ERCP was common bile duct stone that was detected in 40.1% of the patients. The ERCP results in 11.0% of the patients were normal. Regarding appropriate treatment, successful stenting was performed in 43 patients (15.2%). Among post-ERCP complications, pancreatitis was the most adverse event withan incidence rate of 3.3%. Other complications including local bleeding, cholangitis and gastrointestinal perforation, rarely occurred. Post-ERCP pancreatitis was reported in 1.8% of men and 3.6% of women (P=0.120). Background Jaundice is a common neonatal *** study was conducted to determine the effect of metoclopramide on neonatal bilirubin and maternal prolactin (primary outcomes) and milk volume (secondary outcome).Methods This triple-blind,randomized,controlled,clinical trial was conducted on 112 *** participants were assigned to the intervention (metoclopramide) and control groups (placebo) using block ***-mg metoclo-pramide and placebo tablets were taken by the participants three times a *** intervention began in the first 2-10 hours after childbirth and continued until the fifth *** mothers' prolactin level was measured on the first morning after the intervention and on the sixth day (1 day after the intervention was over).Neonatal total bilirubin was also measured before the intervention and on the sixth *** After the intervention,the two groups did not differ significantly in terms of the mean neonatal indirect bilirubin (P =0.565) and milk volume (P =0.261),but the mean serum prolactin was significantly higher in the metoclopramide group compared to the placebo group (adjusted mean difference 37;95% confidence interval 58.1-16.5;P =0.001).Conclusions Metoclopramide increased maternal serum prolactin but had no effects on neonatal *** insufficient numbers of studies on this subject mandate further research.

Seasonal Variation in Volatile Oil, Polyphenol Content and Antioxidant Activity in Extract of Laurus nobilis Grown in Iran

The leaves ofLaurus nobilis were collected in the middle of four seasons （spring, summer, autumn, and winter） to determine the best harvesting time for obtaining the highest oil yield, 1,8-cineole and polyphenol content and antioxidant activity. After drying the plant materials in shade, their EOs （essential oils） were obtained by hydro-distillation method. Analysis of variance showed harvesting time had significant effect on the oil yields of L. nobilis. Seventy one components were identified in the oils of L. nobilis with 1, 8-cineole （5.7%-42.6%）, ot-terpinyl acetate （3.2%-13.1%）, sabinene （2.3%-12.0%）, beta-elemene （0.2%-17.7%） and （E）-caryophyllene （0.2%-16.9%） as the main constituents in different seasons. The predominant phenolic constituents in L. nobilis were cinnamic acid, carvacrol, quercetin and coumarin, respectively. Gallic acid, catechin, caffeic acid, chloregenic acid, p-Comaric acid and rutin were not detected in any seasons. The best antioxidant activity was in spring （268.6μg/mL） and the lowest one was in winter （702.1μg/mL）.

Does delayed gastric emptying shorten the H pylori eradication period? A double blind clinical trial

AIM: To evaluate the gastric emptying inhibitory effects of sugar and levodopa on H pylori eradication period. METHODS: A total of 139 consecutive patients were randomized into 6 groups. The participants with peptic ulcer disease or non-ulcer dyspepsia non-responding to other medications who were also H pylori-positive patients either with positive rapid urease test (RUT) or positive histology were included. All groups were pretreated with omeprazole for 2 d and then treated with quadruple therapy regimen (omeprazole, bismuth, tetracycline and metronidazole); all drugs were given twice daily. Groups 1 and 2 were treated for 3 d, groups 3, 4 and 5 for 7 d, and group 6 for 14 d. Groups 1 to 4 received sugar in the form of 10% sucrose syrup. Levodopa was prescribed for groups 1 and 3. Patients in groups 2 and 4 were given placebo for levodopa and groups 5 and 6 received placebos for both sugar and levodopa. Upper endoscopy and biopsies were carried out before treatment and two months after treatment. Eradication of H pylori was assessed by RUT and histology 8 wk ***: Thirty patients were excluded. Per-protocol analysis showed successful eradication in 53% in group 1, 56% in group 2, 58% in group 3, 33.3% in group 4, 28% in group 5, and 53% in group 6. Eradication rate, patient compliance and satisfaction were not significantly different between the groups. CONCLUSION: It seems that adding sugar or levodopa or both to anti H pylori eradication regimens may lead to shorter duration of treatment.
