Changes in Soil Physicochemical Properties under Selected Climate-Smart Agricultural Practices in Central African Republic

Soil nutrient depletion as a result of continuous cultivation with insufficient external nutrient replenishment is a major challenge in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). A trial using the organic and mineral fertilizer was established in the cassava cropping system of the Pissa and Damara areas to address the declining soil fertility. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of cow manure and mineral fertilizer in combination or sole application on soil physico-chemical properties and macronutrients. The experimental trial adopted a randomized complete block design (RCBD) replicated four times. The treatments comprised of;T1 (Control), T2 (Peasant practice), T3 (sole NPK), and T4 (Cow manure + NPK). The data on soil physicochemical analysis was subjected to a one-way analysis of variance in SAS 9.4 and the mean was separated by Tukey’s HSD test at p < 0.005. The soil pH values ranged from 4.20 to 4.91;and 4.53 to 5.28 in Pissa and Damara respectively. According to the treatments, a low pH value is observed in T3 (4.13) in the Pissa. Combined use of cow manure and the mineral fertilizer resulted in higher Mg K and N in the Pissa region and higher soil pH in Damara. The use of sole NPK (T3) gave a higher soil carbon and CN ratio. In the Pissa region the CEC, Cu, Fe, and Zn were higher in the treatments with mineral fertilizer compared to the control. Conclusively, the use of mineral fertilizer and cow manure can be used with optimum rates to improve soil physico-chemical properties on a sustainable basis.

The off-site implications of deforestation on sedimentation rates and pollution in Abkenar open water (Anzali Lagoon, Caspian Sea) using radionuclide techniques and sediment quality indices

Abkenar open water(AOW) has a 35 km~2 distribution and is the largest part of the Anzali Lagoon in the southern coastal zone of the Caspian Sea. The effects of deforestation in the upstream basin of the AOW were assessed by measuring the rate of sedimentation, sediment contamination, and ecological risk for aquatic life and end-users using radioisotopes Cesium-137 and Lead-210. The chronology of the AOW sediment column was studied using the Constant Rate of Supply model. Correlations between environmental changes and the sedimentary regime of the study area highlight the contribution of the AOW authorized international and local wood harvesting companies pre-and-post 1950 in the catchment in terms of the rate of sediment supply and the influx of toxic metals. Historical evidence shows that two specific layers formed during World Wars I and II with the mean rates of 0.185 ± 0.04(±STD) and 0.32 ± 0.02 kg/(m·y), respectively. The highest influx of alkali elements and toxic metals(nickel, cadmium, lead, zinc, and copper) into the basin occurred in 1945. Two layers of gray mud(16-50 cm) and organic-rich dark loss mud(0-16 cm) correlated well with the programmed wood harvesting *** layers accumulated from 1953 to 2000 with a mean rate of 0.6 ± 0.2 and 2 ± 0.7 kg/(m~2·y). Thus,aquatic life and end-users have been exposed to moderate to extremely high levels of toxic metals and a moderate level of contamination since the 1950 s.

Background:Systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE)is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by the involvement of multiple organs and autoantibody *** study aimed to determine the association of human leukocyte antigen(HLA)-DQ and-DR alleles with SLE at a tertiary hospital in ***:This case-control study was conducted in the Department of Rheumatology,Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University(BSMMU),Dhaka,*** patients who fulfilled the 1997 revised American College of Rheumatology classification criteria for SLE were considered cases(n=41).The controls(n=32)were selected from the hospital staff of BSMMU,including doctors and nurses who did not suffer from any known rheumatic diseases,and there was no such disease in their first-degree *** chain reaction using a sequence-specific primer(PCRSSP)in a low-resolution typing method was carried out on blood samples collected for HLA-DQ and-DR allele ***:The cases and controls had comparable mean ages(31 vs.32 years),and most cases were female(95.1%vs.34.4%).The most frequent clinical manifestations were mucocutaneous(85.4%),followed by musculoskeletal(70.7%)and constitutional symptoms(58.5%).The cases had a significantly higher frequency of HLA-DR2 allele compared with healthy controls(70.7%vs.43.8%;odds ratio:3.1;95%confidence interval:1.2-8.2).In addition,HLADQ6 allele was found to have a significant association with mucocutaneous manifestations of the cases(88.9%,P=0.03).Conclusions:Bangladeshi adults having HLA-DR2 may be more susceptible to ***-DQ6 allele might be associated with mucocutaneous manifestations of SLE.

Associations of autoantibodies and clinical profile of the patients with systemic sclerosis

Background:Systemic sclerosis is characterized by the involvement of organs and the presence of specific *** objectives of this study were to identify the autoantibodies and to determine their association with the selected clinical features of the disease among Bangladeshi systemic sclerosis ***:This cross-sectional study was performed at the rheumatology outpatient clinic of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical *** against nine systemic sclerosis-specific antigens were tested using an enzyme-linked immunoassay immunoblot *** clinical features of patients with positive and negative autoantibody were examined by χ^(2) or Fisher's exact ***:A total of 71 patients with systemic sclerosis(66;93.0%female)were *** mean age at disease onset was 33.2 ***-seven(80.3%)patients had diffuse cutaneous *** of nine autoantibodies,four were positive,anti-topoisomerase-I(57.7%),anti-U1 ribonucleic protein(21.1%),anti-RNA polymerase Ⅲ(18.3%),and anticentromere antibodies(4.2%).Eleven(15.5%)patients were negative for any antibodies and 11 patients were positive for at least two ***-U3-RNP,anti-PMScl,anti-Ku,and anti-Th/To auto antibodies were absent in all ***-RNA polymerase III was associated with raised pulmonary arterial systolic pressure(PASP)and anti-U1-RNP with decreased forced vital capacity(FVC).Conclusions:Anti-topoisomerase-I was the commonest autoantibody in patients with systemic sclerosis in ***-RNA polymerase III antibody had significant association with raised PASP and anti-U1-RNP with decreased FVC.

Assessment of deforestation impact on soil erosion in loess formation using 137Cs method (case study: Golestan Province, Iran)

Golestan,a province in the North-East of Iran,is characterized by high coverage of loess *** 1963,the area has experienced approximately 200,000 ha deforestation due to land-use changes in agriculture and increasing demand for ***,110,000 ha of the clear-cut lands are under dry-farming,mainly for wheat cropping,and about 86,000 ha have been *** IAEA funded project is the first attempt to use nuclear techniques in the East of Hircanian Forest for determination of on-site impacts of deforestation due to two land-use changes(*** farming and reforestation).Practicing long-term dry-farming led to 60%soil losses with a mean rate of 2 mm per *** net erosion rate of croplands on loess deposits in the study area was 32.27 t ha-1 ***,cultivation of even-aged Cypress trees since 1993,showed 13 to 60 percent effectiveness in soil ***-farming land use resulted in the loss of 95 t ha-1 soil organic carbon(SOC)stock at a mean rate of 1.7 t ha-1 over 54 *** Cypress trees successfully restored the SOC content by 100%compared with the SOC in original *** conversion of dry-farming lands to orchards of olive trees since 2004,brought more income for farmers but were less effective in soil conservation because of low canopy cover of olive *** data provide key information and guidance for land users and decisionmakers about implementing strategic and sustainable conservation practices to restore degraded land.

Prediction of corrosion rate for friction stir processed WE43 alloy by combining PSO-based virtual sample generation and machine learning

The corrosion rate is a crucial factor that impacts the longevity of materials in different *** undergoing friction stir processing(FSP),the refined grain structure leads to a notable decrease in corrosion ***,a better understanding of the correlation between the FSP process parameters and the corrosion rate is still *** current study used machine learning to establish the relationship between the corrosion rate and FSP process parameters(rotational speed,traverse speed,and shoulder diameter)for WE43 *** Taguchi L27 design of experiments was used for the experimental *** addition,synthetic data was generated using particle swarm optimization for virtual sample generation(VSG).The application of VSG has led to an increase in the prediction accuracy of machine learning models.A sensitivity analysis was performed using Shapley Additive Explanations to determine the key factors affecting the corrosion *** shoulder diameter had a significant impact in comparison to the traverse speed.A graphical user interface(GUI)has been created to predict the corrosion rate using the identified *** study focuses on the WE43 alloy,but its findings can also be used to predict the corrosion rate of other magnesium alloys.

Objectives:To determine the association of Human leukocyte antigen B(HLA‑B)alleles with ankylosing spondylitis and the allelic association of HLAB27 with endoplasmic reticulum aminopeptidase 1(ERAP1)single-nucleotide polymorphism(SNP)rs30187 in patients with ankylosing spondylitis(AS).Methods:We studied 48 consecutively enrolled well-defined AS patients and 48 healthy controls recruited from the outpatient clinic of the rheumatology department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University(BSMMU),Dhaka,*** genotype HLA-B alleles from peripheral blood DNA,we designed sequence-specific primers for polymerase chain ***'s sequencing method was used to detect the ERAP1 rs30187 *** HLA-B allele distributions were compared between cases and *** infer an allelic association between HLA-B27 and ERAP1,allele distributions from both loci were compared using ***-squared test or Fisher's exact test was used to quantify the association,and their strength of association was tested by odds ratio(OR)with 95%confidence interval(CI).Results:The frequency of HLA-B27 was found to be higher in AS patients(60.4%)than in healthy controls(8.3%).HLA-B27 allele had an OR of 16.8(95%CI=5.2–54.4)for the development of ***,4%of AS patients had both HLA-B27 and *** significant association was found between ERAP1 rs30187 SNP and HLA-B27 in patients with AS(OR=1.7,95%CI=0.5–5.6).Conclusions:HLA-B27 was significantly associated with AS in patients in ***,no association between ERAP1 rs30187 SNP and HLA-B27 was observed.
