Comparison of postoperative sore throat following laryngoscopy conducted by Miller and Macintosh laryngoscope blades

BACKGROUND: Post operative sore throat (PST) is one of the most common complaints after tracheal intubation. In this study we compared the effects of curved and straight laryngoscope blades on severity and incidence of PST. METHOD: In this prospective randomized clinical trial we evaluated incidence and severity of PST in 147 ASA physical status I–II, aged 18 – 62 y (group Miller, n = 71), (group Macintosh, n = 76) following intubation with Miller and Macintosh laryngoscope blades by using Visual Analog Scale (VAS). RESULTS: The overall incidence of PST in our study was 35.4% (Macintosh group = 39.5% and in Miller group = 31% and P = 0.829). The incidence of PST was not statistically different between two kinds of laryngoscope blades and the mean rank of pain score was not statistically different in recovery room and up to 48 hours after surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed these types of laryngoscope blade had not association with incidence and severity of PST. .

The global,prevalence,and risk factors of postoperative fever after percutaneous nephrolithotomy:A systematic review and meta-analysis

Objective:This study aimed to explore the global,prevalence,and risk factors of fever after percutaneous nephrolithotomy(PCNL)by conducting a systematic review and ***:The high-sensitivity searching was conducted without time limitation until December 30,2020 in Web of Sciences,Scopus,and PubMed based on inclusion and exclusion ***:The prevalence rates of fever and sepsis among patient undergoing PCNL were estimated 9.5%(95%confidence interval[CI]:9.3%-9.7%),and 4.5%(95%CI:4.2%-4.8%),*** tube was used in 9.96%(95%CI:9.94%-9.97%)of *** mean preoperative white blood cells of patients were 6.401×109/L;18.3%and 4.55%of patients were considered as the positive urinary culture and pyuria,*** 20.4%of patients suffered from residual *** odds ratios(ORs)of fever in patients who suffering from diabetes mellitus,hydronephrosis,staghorn stones,and blood transfusion were 4.62(95%CI:2.95-7.26),1.04(95%CI:0.81-1.34),2.57(95%CI:0.93-7.11),and 2.65(95%CI:1.62-4.35),*** who underwent PCNL in prone position were more likely to develop fever(OR:1.23;95%CI:0.75-2.00)than patients in supine ***:The current study showed that patients who suffer from diabetes mellitus,hydronephrosis,staghorn stones,nephrostomy tube or double-J stent,blood transfusion,and also patients who underwent PCNL in prone position surgery are more likely to develop a postoperative fever after PCNL.

3D numerical investigation of effects of density and surface tension on mixing time in bottom-blown gas-stirred ladles

In molten phase metallurgical processes,mixing via gas injection has a vital role in obtaining a homogeneous *** efficiency of mixing depends on operational variables such as gas flow rate and slag height as well as physical properties of the molten phases.A numerical simulation is conducted to study the above parameters in the flow behavior of a bottom-blown *** molten metal and the slag are modeled by water and oil,*** numerical results,particularly the mixing time,are validated against experimental *** results show that mixing time increases as the slag height increases and decreases as the density of the slag material *** mixing time decreases with an increase in the density of the primary phase;however,it increases as the surface tension between air and water increases.A case with properties close to a real molten metal is also *** performance of the system is influenced by the momentum rather than the dissipative ***,the effect of the density of the molten phase on the mixing process is more pronounced compared to the effect of the surface tension between the air and the molten phase.
