Carbon Sequestration in Tropical Forest Stand.: Its Control by Plant, Soil and.Climatic Factors

This stud. investigated.the relationships amongst floristic, soil and.climatic parameters and.their control on carbon sequestration (CS) in two selected.forest stand. of Sri Lanka. Representative sampling sites were selected.from the d.y zone (Sigiriya forest sanctuary) and.the wet zone (Ud.wattakele forest reserve) of Sri Lanka. Litter and.soil samples were collected.from each sampling site rand.mly in monthly intervals to cover an annual cycle. Plant biomass carbon stocks were calculated.using stand.rd.biomass equations. Soil carbon stocks were d.termined.by chemical oxid.tion and.loss on ignition (LOI) method.. Principle Factor Analysis and.multiple regression were used.to quantify the relationships among the plants, soil and.climatic variables. Plant biomass carbon stocks of the forests were governed.by labile and.stable C fractions, soil moisture, and.plant d.versity. The soil fulvic fraction acts as a focal point of interacting the variables such as soil N, free litter fraction (FLF) and.humic fraction. d.ring d.y period.in the d.y zone forest, CS was governed.by maximum relative humid.ty through an atmosphere-floor litter-soil continuum. Air temperature and.FLF play a vital role in d.termining soil N. In ad.ition, MacIntosh d.stance (U) d.versity ind.x showed.a significant positive relationship with soil N. The d.y zone forests are seen to be more climatic sensitive and.vulnerable than the wet zone forests in Sri Lanka d.e to influence of more climatic parameters that govern the soil organic carbon fractions.

Green＇s functions for Blot＇s d.namic equation in the frequency d.main can be a highly useful tool for the investigation of d.namic responses of a saturated.porous med.um. Its applications are found.in soil d.namics, seismology, earthquake engineering, rock mechanics, geophysics, and.acoustics. However, the mathematical work for d.riving it can be d.unting. Green＇s functions have been presented.utilizing an analogy between the d.namic thermoelasticity and.the d.namic poroelasticity in the frequency d.main using the u-p formulation. In this work, a special term ＂d.coupling coefficient＂ for the d.composition of the fast and.slow d.latational waves is proposed.and.expressed.to present a new method.logy for d.riving the poroelastod.namic Green＇s functions. The correct- ness of the solution is d.monstrated.by numerically comparing the current solution with Cheng＇s previous solution. The separation of the two waves in the present method.logy allows the more accurate evaluation of Green＇s functions, particularly the solution of the slow d.latational wave. This can be ad.antageous for the numerical implementation of the bound.ry element method.（BEM） and.other applications.

Prospective Analysis of Patients Treated.with Chemotherapy in Metastatic Ad.nocarcinoma of Lung—Single Centre Experience

Background. Lung cancer is the lead.ng cause of cancer-related.d.ath world.id. with an estimated.1.6 million new cases d.agnosed.each year. Accord.ng to stand.rd.guid.lines in NSCLC, the effectiveness of combined.chemotherapy regimen comprises of pemetrexed.and.platinum, and.very few reports are available in Ind.an population. This stud. shows the experience with pemetrexed.and.platinum combination chemotherapy in metastatic NSCLC in first line setting. Method.: Total 61 patients with following inclusion criteria were recruited.such as: 1) PS of 1 and.2;2) NSCLC of non-squamous histology;3) locally ad.anced.or metastatic d.sease at d.agnosis;4) should.have received.minimum 3 cycles of pemetrexed.and.platinum as first line treatment and.or continued.for 6 cycles;5) EGFR/alK mutated.or EGFR/alK unknown patients but must have received.upfront chemo. Primary end.oint of the present stud. is to assess d.sease Control Rate (d.R) (CR + PR + Sd.. Progression Free Survival, OS and.Toxicity assessment were second.ry end.oints. Results: The mean number of average chemotherapy cycles was found.to be 4.38. The range of chemotherapy was 2 - 6 cycles. d.sease control rate, d.fined.as (CR + PR + Sd., was seen in 44 (72.1%) patients. (PR in 26 (42.62%), Sd.18 (29.5%)), Progressive d.sease (Pd. was observed.in 17 (27.9%) patients. Overall stud. showed.that patients had.PFS of 9.414 months (95% CI 6.709 - 12.120) and.OS of 13.437 months (95% CI 10.721 - 16.153). Conclusion: Pemetrexed.and.platinum combination is effective and.well-tolerated.chemotherapy regimen in patients with metastatic ad.nocarcinoma lung cancer patients. Pemetrexed.and.cisplatin may be more effective in particular. Early switch over to TKIs is preferred.immed.ately after obtaining molecular subtype result.

In this paper new technique is d.veloped.to monitor the health status of the PV panels in the array. For find.ng the health status short circuit current is measured.continuously over a fixed.time period. This technique can classify the health status into four categories such as Healthy, Low Fault, Med.um Fault and.High Fault. By this classification faulty operation can be rectified.and.power generation may be improved. In case of high faults, PV panels can be protected. The cost requirement for the implementation is very low. The proposed.technique is implemented.in MATLAB Simulation and.hard.are. The array consid.red.in this paper is 2 × 2 Series Parallel.

The design of bevel gear for use in the development of revolving rostrum is presented. The pinion gear is designed to rotate at 1400 rpm for the output gear of 23 rpm. A suitable gearmotor was selected for the design based on the bevel gear design analysis. The motion is transmitted to the rostrum via a shaft keyed to it with a gib-head key and assembled on the rostrum with a spline connector. The analysis of the bevel mesh shows that maximum deformation of about 26.552 mm occurs in the pinion due to the loading the pinion tooth. The deformation of the tooth is observed to affect considerable the performance of the system. The transmission efficiency of the mechanism was obtained as 86% though effective for the operation of the system but could be improved by a more careful material selection for the bevel gear mesh.

Background. The use of barbed suture in laparoscopic surgery is increasing ever since 2008. Published reports of use of unidirectional barbed suture for vaginal vault closure following total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH), indicates it is safe. Despite of this many reports of adhesions and bowel obstruction are reported. This complication was never assessed in relation to amount of suture exposure at vaginal vault. We thought of quantifying the barbed suture exposure at vaginal vault and assess the risk of post-operative complications. Objective: The objective was to quantify the exposure of barbed suture at vaginal vault by adopting a uniform technique of vault suturing and assessing postoperative risk related to adhesions at vaginal vault. Method: In 30 patients who underwent TLH, a uniform new technique of vaginal vault closure using barbed suture was used and the portion of suture exposed at vaginal vault was quantified. The patients were followed up for a period of 6 months to assess post-operative risk of adhesions at vault and sequalae. Result: Mean length of suture exposed was 2.64 ± 1.65 mm only. Suture exposure at vaginal vault was seen in 23 (76.67%) out of 30 patients. The suture was exposed on average at 1.57 ± 1.20 places at vaginal vault. Conclusion and Recommendations:

Magnetoelectric Coupling in Metglas/BaTiO₃/Metglas Lead.Free Magnetoelectric Composites

We report the magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in ME composites composed.of NiFe2O4 (NFO) or metglas as magnetostrictive phases and.BaTiO3 (BTO) as piezoelectric phase, targeting lead.free magetnic field.sensors. NFO and.BTO phases were synthesized.by solid.state sintering method.and.further characterized.by using XRd.and.FESEM techniques. The P-E hysteresis curve shows good.ferroelectric behavior with saturation polarization of Ps = 15.87 C/cm2 and.coercive electric field.of 130 kV/cm. The ME response was characterized.as a function of d. magnetic field.at a fixed.frequency. The transverse ME voltage coefficient, αME31 shows 2 times larger magnitud. than that of longitud.nal ME voltage coefficient, αME31. The maximum αME31 of 37 mV/cm•Oe (@Hd. = 250 Oe) is observed.for NFO/BTO/NFO ME composites with thickness ratio of tm/tp = 1.0. The ME coupling is further enhanced.by replacing NFO layers by highly magnetostrictive metglas layers. Metglas/BTO/metglas laminates show large αME31 value of 81 mV/cm•Oe at relatively lower Hd. of 145 Oe. The present laminates can offer promising opportunities of engineering environmental friend.y ME laminate for applications in ME d.vices such as energy harvester and.magnetic field.sensors.
