Competitiveness of Winter Rice Varieties against Weed under Dry Direct Seeded Conditions

Aerobic rice or dry direct seeded rice is highly vulnerable to weeds because of lack of “head start” over weeds and standing water layer to suppress weeds. The risks of chemical control and the huge cost involvement in mechanical control demand an eco-friendly and cost-effective integrated weed management. Weed competitive rice cultivar may be considered as a viable tool for integrated weed management. In these circumstances, an experiment was designed to evaluate weed competitiveness of some selected winter rice varieties under aerobic soil conditions. The study was conducted during dry season (February to June) 2016 at the Agronomy Field Laboratory and Weed Management Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh. Fourteen rice varieties namely, BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan47, BRRI dhan50, BRRI dhan55, BRRI dhan58, BRRI dhan59, BRRI dhan67, Binadhan-5, Binadhan-6, Binadhan-8, Binadhan-10, BRRI hybrid dhan3 and Agrodhan-14 were grown under weedy and weed-free conditions. Plots with no rice were also maintained to observe the natural growth of weed in absence of rice. The experiment was conducted with split-plot design with three replications. Weeding regime was allocated in main plot and rice variety was allocated in sub-plot. Results showed that rice varieties varied widely in their yield performances and weed competitiveness. Among rice varieties, BRRI dhan59 allowed the minimum weed growth (19.2 g m-2) while Binadhan-5 allowed the maximum weed growth (62.8 g m-2). Grain yield ranged from 1.85 t ha-1 (BRRI dhan55) to 3.92 t ha-1 (Binadhan-5) under weed-free condition and between 0.41 t ha-1 (BRRI dhan55) and 2.06 t ha-1 (BRRI dhan59) under weedy condition. Weed inflicted relative yield loss ranged from 43.4% to 82.1% among the varieties. BRRI dhan59 allowed the least yield penalty (43.4%) while Binadhan-5 had the maximum yield penalty (82.1%) due to weed competition. Efficacy and Economics of Different Need Based Nitrogen Management Approaches in Winter Rice

This experiment aimed to study the efficacy of different nitrogen (N) management approaches in winter rice. The experiment consisted of two rice varieties: 1) BRRI (Bangladesh Rice Research Institute) dhan29-an inbred and 2) Dhanigold-a hybrid, and eight N management approaches: 1) BRRI recommended N (control), 2) Soil analysis based N management, 3) N application based on Agro-ecological zone, 4) 20 kg·N·ha-1 at ≤35 SPAD (Silicon photon activate diode) value, 5) 30 kg·N·ha-1 at ≤35 SPAD value, 6) 20 kg·N·ha-1 at ≤3.0 LCC (leaf colour chart) value, 7) 30 kg·N·ha-1 at ≤3.0 LCC value and 8) Urea Super Granule. Between two varieties, hybrid Dhani gold produced higher grain yield (6.67 t·ha-1) than the inbred BRRI dhan29. Application of 20 kg·N·ha-1 at ≤3.0 LCC value gave the highest grain yield (7.10 t·ha-1), whereas the lowest grain yield (5.92 t·ha-1) was found from the SPAD approach with 20 kg·N·ha-1 at ≤35 SPAD value. In case of treatment interaction highest grain yield (7.34 t·ha-1) was found in BRRI dhan29 coupled with 20 kg·N·ha-1 at ≤3.0 LCC value with 18 kg·N·savings·ha-1 over control, maximum gross income (146,800 BDT·ha-1) and net benefit (142,120 BDT·ha-1), which was statistically identical with the grain yield from the interaction of Dhani gold and 30 kg·N·ha-1 at ≤3.0 LCC value but required 42 kg·extra·N·ha-1 (over control). The lowest grain yield (5.19 t·ha-1) was found when Dhanigold was coupled with 30 kg·N·ha-1 at ≤35 SPAD value, while the 20 kg·N·application·ha-1 at ≤35 SPAD value gave moderate yield (6.87 t·ha-1) with considerable higher gross (139,600 BDT·ha-1) and net (136,090 BDT·ha-1) incomes than the control (gross: 121,000 and net: 115,600 BDT·ha-1). The results reveal that 20 kg·N·ha-1 at ≤3.0 LCC value appeared as the promising practice for inbred BRRI dhan29, and 30 kg·N·ha-1 at ≤35 SPAD value for hybrid Dhanigold in terms of yield, N use efficiency and economic benefit of winter rice.

Investigation of the Potential Association between Clustered Regularly Interspersed Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) and Antibiotic Resistance Pattern of Bacterial Strains Isolated from Medical Waste and Environmental Water

Enterobacteriaceae are important human pathogens that cause many food and waterborne illness. Rapid emergence of multi-drug resistant bacteria in Bangladesh has become a serious problem. Phage-host interaction is now considered as the major driving force for the conversion of non-pathogenic bacteria to pathogenic ones. Evolution of highly pathogenic and antibiotic resistant bacteria largely depends upon the horizontal gene transfer by means of plasmid, megaplasmid and bacteriophages. Conversely, bacteria may acquire a novel defence mechanism called CRISPR (Clustered regularly interspersed short palindromic repeats) that can restrict horizontal transfer of plasmids and bacteriophages to limit the spread of antibiotic resistance genes among bacterial species. In this study, twenty bacterial strains were isolated from water of different medical waste and Buriganga river. Therefore, CRISPR locus was investigated following various biochemical and molecular analysis of those bacterial isolates. Identification of the bacterial isolates was conducted by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) based assay of 16S rDNA extracted from those isolated strains. Results indicated that most strains were identified as Proteus mirabilis and Citrobacter freundii which mainly cause septicemia, and pneumonia in human. Thereafter, antibiogram of these strains was performed by using 11 different antibiotic discs where bacterial isolates from medical drainage system showed more resistant to antibiotics than the river water. In this study, CRISPR locus was also investigated within the genome of the isolated bacterial stains but unexpectedly, we did not find any CRISPR locus in their genome. In conclusion, we confirm that multi-drug resistant bacterial strains are devoid of CRISPR locus suggesting a possible negative association between CRISPR locus and antibiotic resistance. The Central Cattle Breeding and Dairy Farm, Bangladesh waste contributes in emergence and spread of aminoglycoside-resistant bacteria

Aminoglycosides are one of the categories of antibiotics most frequently used in treating several cattle diseases at the Central Cattle Breeding and Dairy Farm (CCBDF), Savar,Dhaka,Bangladesh. Untreated veterinary clinical healthcare waste (VCHW) of diseased cattle at CCBDF which directly disposed to surrounding may contribute to the antibiotic resistant bacteria pollution (ARB) pollution. The investigation analyses the role of VCHW of CCBDF in spreading ARB. Here we studied:1) veterinary clinical data and antibiotics treatment history;2) total and resistant bacteria counts in fecal samples of healthy and diseased cattles as well as VCHW of CCBDF;and 3) finally, data analysis to estimate the burden of VCHW of CCBDF in the pollution of environment with aminoglycoside antibiotics resistant bacteria. The results conclusively demonstrate the spread of 3 different aminoglycoside antibiotics, namely genta- mycin, kanamycin and streptomycin resistant bacte- ria in the surrounding environment alarmingly with high significant value (p < 0.01 - 0.05). This study re- veals the risks to the cattle as well as public health posed by the random VCHW disposal at the CCBDF, Bangladesh.

Prevalence and clinical significance of antiphospholipid antibodies among hospitalized COVID-19 patients

Objective:To describe the prevalence of antiphospholipid antibodies in coronavirus disease-19(COVID-19)and to find potential associations between antiphospholipid antibody positivity and clinical ***:From September to November 2020,clinical and laboratory data were collected from 50 COVID-19 patients hospitalized at Saiful anwar General Hospital in Malang,*** antibodies were measured by finding Ig M anti-β2 glycoprotein,lupus anticoagulant,and Ig M/Ig G *** characteristics,thrombotic events,ICU admission,and mortality during hospitalization were *** severity was defined by the Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of COVID-19,***:Among 50 patients,5 patients(10.0%)were positive for antiphospholipid antibodies:4 patients(80.0%)had Ig M anti-β2 glycoprotein and 1 patient had Ig G anti-cardiolipin(20.0%)and Ig M anti-cardiolipin(20.0%),none of lupus anticoagulant was *** antibodies were associated with anosmia(OR 8.1;95%CI 1.1-57.9;P=0.018),nausea and vomiting(OR 12.4;95%CI 1.2-122.6;P=0.010),diarrhea(OR 9.8;95%CI 1.3-70.9;P=0.010),cardiovascular disease(OR 1.4;95%CI 1.0-1.9;P=0.001),chronic kidney disease(OR 12.0;95%CI 1.6-90.1;P=0.05),acute coronary syndrome(OR 29.3;95%CI 2.0-423.7;P=0.001),moderate(OR 0.11;95%CI 0.01-1.10;P=0.031)and severe(OR 18.5;95%CI 1.8-188.4;P=0.002)disease severity,and in-hospital mortality(OR 8.1;95%CI 1.1-57.9;P=0.018).However,there is no correlation between the presence of antiphospholipid antibody and ICU ***:In summary,the prevalence of antiphospholipid antibodies in COVID-19 patients is low,mainly against Ig M anticardiolipin,and is associated with an acute coronary syndrome,gastrointestinal manifestations,moderate and severe disease severity,and increased risk of mortality.

Objective:To explore the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic on the training experiences of urology residents in ***:A cross-sectional study using a web-based questionnaire(SurveyMonkey)involved all registered urology residents in *** questionnaire was structured in Bahasa Indonesia,composed of 28 questions,and divided into three sections:demographic characteristics,current daily activities,and opinions regarding training experiences during the COVID-19 *** survey was distributed to all respondents via chief of residents in each urology center from May 26,2020 to Jun 2,***:Of the total 247 registered urology residents,243 were eligible for the *** response and completeness rate for this study were 243/243(100%).The median age of respondents was 30(range:24e38)years old,and 92.2%of them were *** them,6(2.5%)respondents were confirmed as COVID-19 positive.A decrease in residents’involvement in clinical and surgical activities was distinguishable in endourological and open *** educational activities were switched to web-based video conferences,while others opted for the in-person *** learning methods,such as joining a national or international speaker webinar or watching a recorded video,were used by 93.8%and 80.7%of the respondents,*** respondents thought that educational activities using web-based video conferences and smart learning methods were effective methods of ***,the respondents felt unsure whether training experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic were comparable to the respective period ***:The COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected urology residents’training ***,it also opened up new possibilities for incorporating new learning methodologies in the future.

Comparison of Baclofen and Tizanidine in Reducing Spasticity in Cerebral Palsy: A Randomized Control Trial

Background: Cerebral palsy is the most common chronic motor disability that begins in childhood with the predominant motor abnormality that is spasticity. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to compare the efficacy of oral baclofen and oral tizanidine in reducing spasticity in cerebral palsy patients. Methodology: This randomized controlled trial was conducted from January 2010 to December 2011 and it was carried out in the Out Patient Department (OPD) of Pediatrics at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), Dhaka, Bangladesh and Center for Neurodevelopment and Autism in Children (CNAC) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh. 【目的】新疆传统发酵食品馕饼是维吾尔族的传统主食之一,在不同地区居住的维吾尔族家庭都具有不同的面团发酵方法。对吐鲁番托克逊县坎儿井饮用水制成的传统馕饼酸面团进行可培养微生物组成分析及其面团在发酵过程中挥发性香气成分分析。【方法】采用纯培养、16S r RNA基因序列分析法、26S r RNA基因D1/D2区序列分析法对发酵面团微生物多样性进行分析;采用顶空固相微萃取-气质联用法(HS-SPME-GC-MS)检测挥发性香气成分。【结果】从两种样品中共鉴定到9株旧金山乳杆菌(Lactobacillus sanfranciscensis)、4株食窦魏斯氏菌(Weissella cibaria)、11株解淀粉芽孢杆菌(Bacillus amyloliquefaciens),1株嗜热解淀粉杆菌(Bacillus shackletonii)、1株枯草芽孢杆菌(Bacillus subtills)和10株酿酒酵母菌(Saccharomyces cerevisiae),其中2号样品中未分离到任何可培养酵母菌。GC/MS检测表明,两组酸面团的主要香气成分有脂类、醇类、醛类。【结论】吐鲁番托克逊县传统馕饼酸面团中得到的优势细菌为解淀粉芽孢杆菌和旧金山乳杆菌,优势酵母菌为酿酒酵母菌。虽然2号样品中没有酵母菌,但并未影响到其多种风味物质的产生。用坎儿井水和成的面团均比自来水和成的面团(对照)产生的芳香类物质种类丰富,相对百分含量高。
