Phytopharmacological evaluation of ethanol extract of Sida cordifolia ***

Objective:To investigate the phytochemical screening(group determination)and selected pharmacological activities(antioxidant,antimicrobial and analgesic activity)of the plant Sida cordifolia Linn(***).Methods:Eighty percent concentrated ethanol extract of the roots was *** identify the chemical constituents of plant extract standard procedures were *** phytochemical screening the crude extract was tested for the presence of different chemical groups like reducing sugar,tannins,saponins,steroids,flavonoids,gums,alkaloids and *** antioxidant property of ethanolic extract of *** was assessed by DPPH free radical scavenging *** activity of the extract was tested using the model of acetic acid induced writhing in *** sodium is used as reference standard drug for the analgesic activity test Antibacterial activity of plant extract was carried out using disc diffusion method with five pathogenic bacteria comparison with kanamycin as a ***:Phytochemical analysis of the ethanolic extract of the roots of *** indicated the presence of reducing sugar,alkaloids,steroids and *** DPPH scavenging assay the IC_(50)value was found to be 50 ug/mL which was not comparable to the standard ascorbic *** crude extract produced 44.3%inhibition of writhing at the dose of 300 mg/kg body weight which is statistically significant(P>0.001).The in vitro antimicrobial activity of the ethanol extract of the roots of *** showed no antimicrobial activity against five types of *** experiment was conducted only with five species of bacteria as test species,which do not at all indicate the total inactivity against ***:The obtained results provide a support for the use of this plant in traditional medicine but further pharmacological studies are required.

Evaluation of Antibacterial and Antidiarrhoeal Activities of Feronia limoniaLeaf Extract

The present study was carried out to investigate possible antibacterial and antidiarrhoeal activities of ethanol extract of Feronia limonia leaves. Phytochemical analysis of the crude extract was performed to detect presence of different kinds of phytoconstituents. The antibacterial activity was investigated against four Gram positive and four Gram negative bacteria by using disc diffusion method. The plant extract showed moderate antibacterial activity against Gram positive bacteria namely Staphylococcus saprophyticus and Staphylococcus pyogenes and all tested Gram negative bacteria namely Escherichia coli, Shigella boydii, Shigella dysentery and Shigella flexneri in dose dependant manner. The results of castor oil-induced diarrhoeal study showed that Feronia limonia extract significantly reduced the severity & frequency of diarrhoea in mice at a higher dose of 500 mg/kg compared with the standard drug loperamide (25 mg/kg). The present study clearly supports the medicinal value of this plant. The overall results indicate the possibility of presence of some active principles in the plant extract possessing antibacterial and antidiarrhoeal actions.

Assessment of heavy metal contamination in the sur?cial sediments from the lower Meghna River estuary, Noakhali coast, Bangladesh

Sediment samples were collected from ten selected sites of the lower Meghna River estuary, and six heavy metals were analyzed with Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry(AAS) to assess the contamination level and the metals’ association with sediment grain size. The current results revealed that the mean concentrations of the studied metals were ranked in descending order of iron(Fe)(1.29 ? 103 mg/kg) > zinc(Zn)(42.41 mg/kg) > lead(Pb)(12.48 mg/kg) > chromium(Cr)(10.59 mg/kg) > copper(Cu)(6.22 mg/kg) > cadmium(Cd)(0.28 mg/kg). The geo-accumulation, contamination, and pollution load indexes suggested that the lower Meghna river estuary was not contaminated by Fe, Zn, Pb, Cr, and *** mean size of the sediment ranged from 28.92 to 126.2 mm, and the Pearson correlation coefficient showed a significant association between Fe and Pb(coefficient of determination, r2? 0.836; p < 0.05),and no significant correlation was found between individual metals and grain size, indicating no or low influence on the metals distribution.

Changes of Nutritional Value of Three Marine Dry Fishes (Johnius dussumieri, Harpodon nehereusand Lepturacanthus savala) during Storage

Dry fish is the low cost dietary protein source in Bangladesh. Sometimes dry fishes are kept for a longer period that is the key factor of the deterioration of nutritional value of dry fishes, as they absorb moisture from the surrounding air. The general purpose of this study is to determine the proximate composition of three available marine dry fishes (Harpodon nehereus, Johnius dussumieri and Lepturacanthus savala) and to investigate the changes of nutritional value of these selected dry fishes with the increasing of storing period. The result of this study shows that the mean percentage of moisture content increased at a significant level with the increasing of storing period. For 2 years storing period the moisture content is increased by 12.77%, 11.89% and 6.69% for the three dry fishes (Harpodon nehereus, Johnius dussumieri and Lepturacanthus savala respectively). The result of this study also shows that the mean percentage of protein (6.35, 7.93 and 4.68), lipid (1.92, 0.67 and 1.13), and carbohydrate (1.70, 1.81 and 0.66) of three dry fishes (Harpodon nehereus, Johnius dussumieri and Lepturacanthus savala respectively) decreased greatly for 2 years storing period. The findings of this study showed that nutritional value of dry fishes deteriorate with the increasing of storage period.

Detection of health hazard insecticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in some common marine dry fish samples from Bangladesh

Objectives: The general purpose of this study is to detection and determination of the concentration level of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in some commercially available marine dry fishes and to investigate the contamination status of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) of these dry fishes. Methods: Samples were collected from six largest dry fish markets (three from Chittagong district and three from Cox’s Bazar district) and four types of dry fishes were taken in this study are Ribbon fish (Lepturacanthus savala), Sin Croaker (Johnius dussumieri), Bombay duck (Harpodon nehereus) and Shrimp (mixed species). Total numbers of samples were 24 that were analyzed in the laboratory. Results: The results of the study show that the mean concentrations of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in the samples of Ribbon fish, Bombay duck and Sin croaker were ranged between 130.85 - 153.47ppb, 125.21 - 181.4ppb and 119.86 – 208.65ppb respectively. The mean concentrations of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) were found at a lower amount in shrimp sp. than the other. Conclusions: This result indicates that the concentration of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in dry fish samples from Bangladesh are higher and may causes chronic disease and potential long-term risk for human health.

Sprouts are ready-to-eat and are recognized worldwide as functional components of the human *** advances in innovative agricultural techniques could enable an increase in the production of healthy *** use of light-emitting diode(LED)in indoor agricultural production could alter the biological feedback loop,increasing the functional beneﬁts of plant foods such as wheat and lentil sprouts and promoting the bioavailability of *** effects of white(W),red(R),and blue(B)light were investigated on the growth parameters and nutritional value of wheat and lentil *** the laboratory,seeds were sown under three different LED treat-ments:white,red,and blue light,while normal incandescent light served as a *** seed germina-tion improved by 18.34%and 12.67%for wheat and 18.34%and 12.67%for lentil sprouts under LED treatments R and B,*** increase in total soluble protein and sugar by 33.4%and 9.23%in wheat and by 31.5%and 5.87%in lentils was observed under the R LED *** C concentrations in wheat and lentils were signiﬁcantly increased by R LED compared to all other *** parameters,including potassium and sodium concentrations,were signiﬁcantly increased under red and blue light compared to the control;white light,on the other hand,signiﬁcantly decreased all these *** to the experimental data,red and blue LED light could be beneﬁcial in the production of functional wheat and lentil sprouts with high nutrient concentrations.
