Microalgae cultivation in photobioreactors: sustainable solutions for a greener future

Microalgae cultivation in photobioreactors（PBRs） has emerged as a promising and sustainable approach to address various environmental and energy challenges, offering a multitude of benefits across diverse *** developments in microalgae cultivation in photobioreactors have contributed substantially to the development and optimization of sustainable bioprocesses. This review presents a comprehensive analysis of recent innovations and breakthroughs in the field of microalgae cultivation, with a specific focus on their application in photobioreactors, aimed at paving the way for a greener future. This study in-depth examines the advantages of microalgae cultivation in photobioreactors, concentrating on its effectiveness in wastewater treatment, CO2bioremediation, and the production of biofuels and high-value products. The review evaluates the effects of light,solar irradiation, temperature, nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in culture media, CO2concentrations, and pH on microalgae growth performance, including specific growth and biomass productivity. The study also examines open systems like unstirred ponds, raceway ponds, and circular ponds and closed systems like horizontal tubular, vertical bubble-column, airlift, flat panel, and plastic-bag photobioreactors, comparing their pros and cons. To optimize microalgae cultivation, key factors in photobioreactor design, including photosynthetic efficiencies, light/dark（L/D） cycles, CO2concentrations, mass transfer, hydrodynamics behavior, and p H, are extensively investigated. In addition, the review outlines recent developments in large-scale photobioreactors and highlights the challenges and opportunities associated with photobioreactor scale-up and design parameter optimization, including genetic engineering and economic feasibility. Technologies for utilizing waste heat for power generation have attracted significant attention in recent years due to their potential to enhance energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas *** research focuses on the comparative and optimization analysis of three supercritical carbon dioxide(sCO_(2))Rankine cycles(simple,cascade,and split)for gas turbine waste heat *** study begins with parametric analysis,investigating the significant effects of key variables,including turbine inlet temperature,condenser inlet temperature,and pinch point temperature,on the thermal performance of advanced sCO_(2) power *** identify the most efficient cycle configuration,a multi-objective optimization approach is *** approach combines a Genetic Algorithm with machine learning regression models(Random Forest,XGBoost,Artificial Neural Network,Ridge Regression,and K-Nearest Neighbors)to predict cycle performance using a dataset extracted from cycle *** decision-making process for determining the optimal cycle configuration is facilitated by the TOPSIS(technique for order of preference by similarity to the ideal solution)*** study's major findings reveal that the split cycle outperforms the simple and cascade configurations in terms of power generation across various operating *** optimized split cycle not only demonstrates superior power output but also exhibits enhanced net power output,heat recovery,system and exergy efficiency of 7.99 MW,76.17%,26.86%and 57.96%,respectively,making it a promising choice for waste heat recovery *** research has the potential to contribute to the advancement and widespread adoption of waste heat recovery in energy technologies boosting system efficiency and economic *** provides a new perspective for future research,contributing to the improvement of energy generation infrastructure.

BACKGROUND Pylephlebitis is an extremely rare form of septic thrombophlebitis involving the portal vein,carrying high rates of morbidity and *** SUMMARY We present a case of a 42-year-old male with no past medical history who presented with acute onset of abdominal pain and altered mental status with laboratory tests demonstrating new-onset acute liver *** was determined to be the underlying etiology due to subsequent workup revealing polymicrobial gram-negative anaerobic bacteremia and complete thrombosis of the main and left portal *** our knowledge,this is the first documented case of acute liver failure as a potential life-threatening complication of *** Our case highlights the importance of considering pylephlebitis in the broad differential for abdominal pain,especially if there are co-existing risk factors for *** also demonstrate that fulminant hepatic failure in these patients can potentially be reversible with the immediate initiation of antibiotics and anticoagulation.

Trophic functioning of macrobenthic fauna in a tropical acidified Bornean estuary(Southeast Asia)

The trophic structure of a community is used to infer ecosystem functioning(e.g. energy transfer and nutrient cycling). Here the trophic structure of the benthic infaunal and epifaunal communities in the Brunei Estuary are characterized, and their distribution along an estuarine pH gradient is analyzed using univariate and multivariate techniques. This analysis revealed that surface deposit feeders(e.g., polychaetes) were numerically dominant within the infaunal communities whereas in the epifaunal communities filter feeders(e.g., bivalves) were highly abundant. Species richness for almost all trophic groups increased toward the lower estuary, except for omnivores in the epifaunal communities, which decreased markedly. Both Analysis of Variance(ANOVA) and Analysis of Similarities(ANOSIM) detected significant differences in the density of respective trophic groups among stations. Within infaunal communities, both Biological and Environmental procedure(BIO-ENV) and Canonical Correspondence Analysis(CCA) showed that trophic shifts were associated with environmental gradients. Surface-deposit feeders and omnivores were the most abundant macrobenthos of the upper estuary characterized by low salinity, low pH, and a higher percentage of mud particles. The proportion of filter feeders and carnivores increased with salinity/pH and sand. A more uniform distribution of trophic structure was found in the lower estuary, with high salinity and pH over sandy habitat. In contrast, within epifaunal trophic groups,the percentage of surface deposit feeders and omnivores declined, but filter feeders remarkably increased toward the sea. The proportion of carnivores remained similar at all stations. Non-Metric Multidimensional Scaling(nMDS) ordination for epifaunal trophic groups clearly demarcated higher salinity/pH stations from lower salinity/pH stations, suggesting different trophic compositions along the estuarine pH gradient.

Impact of industrial effluent on growth and yield of rice(Oryza sativa L.) in silty clay loam soil

Degradation of soil and water from discharge of untreated industrial effluent is alarming in Bangladesh. Therefore, buildup of heavy metals in soil from contaminated effluent, their entry into the food chain and effects on rice yield were quantified in a pot experiment. The treatments were comprised of 0, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% industrial effluents applied as irrigation water. Effluents, initial soil, different parts of rice plants and post-harvest pot soil were analyzed for various elements, including heavy metals. Application of elevated levels of effluent contributed to increased heavy metals in pot soils and rice roots due to translocation effects, which were transferred to rice straw and grain. The results indicated that heavy metal toxicity may develop in soil because of contaminated effluent *** metals are not biodegradable, rather they accumulate in soils, and transfer of these metals from effluent to soil and plant cells was found to reduce the growth and development of rice plants and thereby contributed to lower yield. Moreover, a higher concentration of effluent caused heavy metal toxicity as well as reduction of growth and yield of rice, and in the long run a more aggravated situation may threaten human lives,which emphasizes the obligatory adoption of effluent treatment before its release to the environment, and regular monitoring by government agencies needs to be ensured.

Strategies to integrate the Mughal settlements in Old Dhaka

The Mughal settlements are an integral part of Old Dhaka. Uncontrolled urbanization, changes in land use patterns, the growing density of new settlements, and modern transportation have brought about rapid transformation to the historic fabric of the Mughal settlements. As a result, Mughal structures are gradually turning into isolated elements in the transforming fabric. This study aims to promote the historic quality of the old city through clear and sustainable integration of the Mughal settlements in the existing fabric. This study attempts to analyze the Mughal settlements in old Dhaka and correspondingly outline strategic approaches to protect Mughal artifacts from decay and ensure proper access and visual exposure in the present urban tissue.

Investigation on the Effect of Geometrical and Geotechnical Parameters on Elongated Offshore Piles Using Fuzzy Inference Systems

Among numerous offshore structures used in oil extraction, jacket platforms are still the most favorable ones in shallow waters. In such structures, log piles are used to pin the substructure of the platform to the seabed. The pile＇s geometrical and geotechnical properties are considered as the main parameters in designing these structures. In this study, ANSYS was used as the FE modeling software to study the geometrical and geotechnical properties of the offshore piles and their effects on supporting jacket platforms. For this purpose, the FE analysis has been done to provide the preliminary data for the fuzzy-logic post-process. The resulting data were implemented to create Fuzzy Inference System （FIS） classifications. The resultant data of the sensitivity analysis suggested that the orientation degree is the main factor in the pile＇s geometrical behavior because piles which had the optimal operational degree of about 5° arc more sustained. Finally, the results showed that the related fuzzified data supported the FE model and provided an insight for extended offshore pile designs.

Drought susceptibility and low genetic variability are the major constraints of lentil(Lens culinaris Medik.)production *** of an efficient pre-field drought phenotyping technique and identification of diversified drought tolerant lentil genotype(s)are therefore vital and *** separate experiments were conducted using thirty diverse lentil genotypes to isolate drought tolerant genotype(s)as well as to assess their *** both of the experiments,significant(p≤0.01)variation in genotype(G),treatment(T)and G X T was observed for most of the studied *** experiment I,genotypes were examined for drought tolerance at the seedlings stage under hydroponic conditions by assessing root and shoot *** the 30 genotypes studied,BM-1247,BM-1227 and BM-502 were selected as highly tolerant to drought stress as they showed maximum seedling survivability and minimum reduction in growth parameters under drought *** experiment II,the genotypes were assayed for diversity and drought stress tolerance based on morphological traits grown under field *** stress caused a substantial reduction in yield attributing traits,however,the genotypes BM-1247,BM-981,BM-1227 and BM-502 were categorized as drought tolerant genotypes with less than 20%yield *** field screening result of drought stress tolerance was coincided well with the results of laboratory *** divergence study reflected the presence of considerable diversity among the *** laboratory and field screening results,the genotypes,BM-1247,BM-1227,BM-981 and BM-502 were selected as the best drought tolerant *** information can be exploited for further breeding in developing drought tolerance in lentil.

Aminopropyl-containing ionic liquid based organosilica as a novel and efficient adsorbent for removal of crystal violet from wastewaters

Herein a novel aminopropyl-containing ionic liquid based organosilica(ILOS-NH_2) is prepared, characterized and applied as effective adsorbent for removal of crystal violet(CV) dye from wastewater. The ILOS-NH2 material was synthesized by hydrolysis and co-condensation of 1,3-bis-(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)-imidazolium chloride(BTMSPIC) under acidic conditions followed by treatment with 3-aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane in toluene under reflux conditions. This material was characterized using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy(DRIFTS), thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDAX). The material was effectively used in the removal of crystal violet at ambient temperature and showed high capacity and stability under applied conditions. The efficacy of p H, contact time, adsorbent dose, initial dye concentration, temperature, and isotherm studies and the applicability of pseudo-first, second order and Elovich kinetic models have also been investigated.

Numerical Investigation of a modified Kalina cycle system for high-temperature application and genetic algorithm based optimization of the multi-phase expander’s inlet condition

As an alternative to the conventional steam Rankine Cycle,Kalina Cycle has witnessed a growing interest over the past years for high-temperature applications(A working fluid temperature of 500◦C at the turbine inlet).However,the possibility of implementing an additional multi-phase expander on the weak ammonia-water solution loop of the Kalina cycle was hardly analyzed in the available *** this research,two novel Kalina cycles(Kalina cycle-12A and Kalina cycle-12B)have been presented by integrating a multi-phase expander in addition to the turbine installed downstream of the Kalina *** Kalina cycle-12A,this additional multi-phase expander is positioned downstream of the Kalina separator and on the weak ammonia-water solution loop for Kalina Cycle-12B.A detailed mathematical model based on the thermodynamic laws has been developed to solve and optimize the Kalina *** influence of critical decision parameters,specifically the ammonia concentration on working fluid and evaporation pressure,were *** optimization was performed based on the objective to maximize the net power output from the multi-phase expander under steady-state operating *** the performance of the proposed Kalina cycles was compared with the conventional Kalina Cycle-12,both of them demonstrated superior performance,i.e.,net power output and peak thermal efficiency increased by a maximum value of 3.23%for the proposed Kalina Cycle-12A cycle and 3.94%for the proposed Kalina Cycle-12B *** terms of second law efficiency,Kalina Cycle-12A is 3.68 percent more efficient than Kalina Cycle-12,while Kalina Cycle-12B is 4.04 percent more ***,2nd law analysis also reveals,maximum destruction of exergy occurs at the condensers of the cycles.
