Comparative analysis of the efficacy of astigmatic correction after wavefront-guided and wavefront-optimized LASIK in low and moderate myopic eyes

AIM： To evaluate and compare the efficacy of the astigmatic correction achieved with laser in situ keratomileusis（LASIK） in eyes with myopic astigmatism using wavefront-guided（WFG） and wavefront-optimized（WFO） ablation ***： Prospective study included 221 eyes undergoing LASIK： 99 and 122 eyes with low and moderate myopic astigmatism（low and moderate myopia groups）.Two subgroups were differentiated in each group according to the ablation profile： WFG subgroup,109 eyes（45/64,low/moderate myopia groups） treated using the Advanced Custom Vue platform（Abbott Medical Optics Inc.）,and WFO subgroup,112 eyes（54/58,low/moderate myopia groups） treated using the EX-500 platform（Alcon）.Clinical outcomes were evaluated during a 6-month follow-up,including a vector analysis of astigmatic ***： Significantly better postoperative uncorrected visual acuity and efficacy index was found in the WFG subgroups of each group（P≤0.041）.Postoperative spherical equivalent and cylinder were significantly higher in WFO subgroups（P≤0.003）.In moderate myopia group,a higher percentage of eyes with a postoperative cylinder ≤0.25 D was found in the WFG subgroup（90.6% vs 65.5%,P=0.002）.In low and moderate myopia groups,the difference vector was significantly higher in the WFO subgroup compared to WFG（P〈0.001）.In moderate myopia group,the magnitude（P=0.008） and angle of error（P〈0.001） were also significantly higher in the WFO *** induction of high order aberrations were found with WFG treatments in both low and moderate myopia groups（P≤0.006）.CONCLUSION： A more efficacious correction of myopic astigmatism providing a better visual outcome is achieved with WFG LASIK compared to WFO LASIK.

Optimizing the adhesion of soil-touching parts based on biomimetic concepts using the Taguchi method

Several studies highlighted that the surface shape modifications which are inspired by the soil-burrowing animals have positively impacted the soil-tool adhesion;however,it is still unclear what the optimum dimensions of the domed surface are for minimizing soil-tool *** this study,twenty-seven domed discs were created according to Taguchi orthogonal array L27(3^(3))to determine the optimum dimensions of the domed surface that minimize normal adhesion force and disc sinkage simultaneously,as well as comparing the effect of the optimized domed disc versus the flat disc on the normal adhesion force under different soil *** results revealed that disc coverage ratio and dome height to diameter ratio are essential to design parameters that influence the normal adhesion force of *** to the signal-to-noise ratio analysis,it was observed that the combination of 60%disc coverage ratio,25%dome height to diameter ratio,and 10 mm dome base diameter was found to be the most appropriate for the well-balanced improvement of both normal adhesion force and disc sinkage *** all treatments,the optimized domed disc produced less normal adhesion force than the flat disc(about 7%-18%,according to soil condition).It can be concluded that properly designed domed surfaces can significantly reduce the normal adhesion force when compared to flat surfaces.

Seasonal changes in testicular ultrasonogram pixel-intensity and their association with semen characteristics in rams

Objective:To establish reference values for pixel intensity of testicular ultrasonogram of rams in breeding and non-breeding seasons,and to investigate if the seasonal changes in testicular echogenicity and heterogeneity are associated with semen ***:Five Awassi rams aged 3-5 years old and weighing 45-60 kg were subjected to ultrasonographic scanning of the testes twice monthly for one year(from January 2018 to December 2018),together with semen collection and evaluation of ejaculate volume,sperm motility,sperm concentration,sperm morphology and *** ejaculate volume was determined in a graduated collection tube(scale of 0.1 mL).Mass and individual sperm motility was expressed in percentage of motile spermatozoa under optical microscope equipped with a warm *** concentration was determined by using a Neubauer *** smears stained with eosin-nigrosin were used to determine the percentage of live spermatozoa and sperm cell morphology by using a light ***:The mean testicular pixel intensity was the lowest in winter and increased gradually from breeding season to non-breeding season,reaching its maximum value in summer(P<0.05).Pixel intensity was found to have a significant negative correlation with progressive motility(r=-0.605,P<0.05),and sperm concentration(r=-0.619,P<0.05).It is also positively correlated with the percentage of sperm morphological abnormalities(r=0.666,P<0.05).Conclusions:Pixel intensity values of testicular ultrasonogram in rams undergo marked seasonal changes that are associated with fluctuations in photoperiod and ambient *** resulting values of testicular echogenicity(pixel intensity)throughout the year provide useful reference values for predicting the testicular function in Awassi rams.

Clinicopathological features and surgical outcome of patients with fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma(experience with 22 patients over a 15-year period)

AIM To evaluate the clinicopathological features and the surgical outcomes of patients with fibrolamellar hepato-cellular carcinoma(FL-HCC)over a 15-year period. METHODS This is a retrospective study including 22 patients with a pathologic diagnosis of FL-HCC who underwent hepatectomy over a 15-year period. Tumor characteristics,survival and recurrence were evaluated. RESULTS There were 11 male and 11 female with a median age of 29 years(range from 21 to 58 years). Two(9%)patients had hepatitis C viral infection and only 2(9%)patients had alpha-fetoprotein level > 200 ng/m L. The median size of the tumors was 12 cm(range from 5-20 cm). Vascular invasion was detected in 5(23%)patients. Four(18%)patients had lymph node metastases. The median follow up period was 42 mo and the 5-year survival was 65%. Five(23%)patients had a recurrent disease,4 of them had a second surgery with 36 mo median time interval. Vascular invasion is the only significant negative prognostic factor CONCLUSION FL-HCC has a favorable prognosis than common HCC and should be suspected in young patients with non cirrhotic liver. Aggressive surgical resection should be done for all patients. Repeated hepatectomy should be considered for these patients as it has a relatively indolent course.

Water contaminated with pathogenic microbes is considered as one of the most common routes for transmitting diseases in human *** methods have been applied for the decontamination of microbes in contaminated *** the current study,an easy to do hydrothermal method has been used for the preparation of TiO_(2)-Ag *** obtained material was characterised using a scanning electron microscope(SEM)and fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy(FTIR).The morphological appearance of the obtained nanoparticles was in the shape of a sphere with a size range of 60-90 *** antimicrobial activity of the prepared nanoparticles was tested against several pathogenic bacteria and *** obtained results proved that the nanoparticles succeeded to affect all the tested microbes in the following order:Bacillus cereus ATCC6633>Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC9027=Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC13883>Vibrio cholera ATCC700=Candida albicans ATCC 700=Escherichia coli NCTC10418>Staphylococcus aureus *** minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC)of the prepared nanoparticles varied among the tested microbes at range of 12 mg/ml and 25 mg/*** results encourage the application of prepared TiO_(2)-Ag nanoparticles for treatment of microbe-contaminated waters.

Effect of epidermal growth factor on buffalo frozen spermatozoa biometry and metabolic activity

Objective:To assess the effects of epidermal growth factor (EGF) on the Egyptian buffalo bull frozen semen, EGF was incorporated at 0 (control), 50, 100, 200 and 400 ng/mL of extender (Bioxcell?).Methods:Semen features, spermatozoa biometry, total liberated amounts of enzymes (aspartate transaminase, alanine aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase) and lipid peroxidation markers (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, malondialdehyde, glutathione peroxidase, nitric oxide, catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)) were determined in the spermatozoa-free extracellular extender. Results:Spermatozoa membrane integrity significantly (P<0.05) increased, but DNA integrity decreased with EGF 200 ng/mL. Spermatozoa head (dimensions, area and perimeter), but not shape, as well as acrosome and midpiece measures substantially differed with regard to EGF. Principle piece length and volume markedly decreased (at 100 and 200 ng/mL), while total tail/flagellum length increased (at 50 ng/mL) after EGF supplementation. EGF 50 ng/mL was associated with the decline of nitric oxide levels and catalase enzyme activity, but EGF 100 ng/mL significantly decreased the total liberated amounts of enzymes (aspartate transaminase, lactate dehydrogenase, acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase) as well as lipid peroxidation markers (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances and malondialdehyde).Conclusion:EGFin vitro supplementation would affect the semen characteristics of buffalo bull with 100 ng/mL counteracted the freezing mediated oxidative stress indicated with the lowest enzymes leakage and lipid peroxidation.

Cartilage tympanoplasty in the treatment of adhesive otitis media with and without Eustachian tube balloon dilatation

Purpose:To compare cartilage tympanoplasty(CT)combined with eustachian tube balloon dilatation(ETBD)and cartilage tympanoplasty alone as a surgical treatment modality for adhesive otitis media(AdOM)in terms of graft healing,audiological outcomes,and impact on life style,using Chronic Otitis Media Outcome Test 15(COMOT-15).Methods:50 patients with AdOM were randomly classified into 2 groups:25 patients for cartilage tympanoplasty only(CT group)and 25 patients for cartilage tympanoplasty combined with eustachian tube balloon dilatation(CT t ETBD group).Clinical outcomes in both groups were compared at 3 and 6 months of follow ***:There was no significant difference in graft healing between the two *** COMOT-15 scores significantly decreased in both groups with a significant difference between the groups with regard to the decrease in COMOT-15 scores at 3 and 6 months of follow-up(P<0.05).Hearing improvement was achieved,as the mean preoperative ABG was 26.5±5.4 and 27.1±4.6 dB,and the mean postoperative ABG at 6 months was 19.4±4.4 and 14.6±3.9 dB in the CT and the CT t ETBD groups,*** difference in the magnitude of ABG reduction in the two groups was significant at 3 and 6 months of postoperative follow-up(P<0.05)in favour of the CT t ETBD ***:ETBD can increase the success rate of cartilage tympanoplasty in patients with AdOM by enhancing the audiological outcome and quality of life.

Rainfall patterns of Algerian steppes and the impacts on natural vegetation in the 20^th century

Since 1960, the steppe regions of North Africa have been subject to an increasing desertification, including the degradation of traditional pastures. The initially dominant species （Artemisia herba-alba, Lygeum spartum and Slipa tenacissima） declined and were progressively replaced by other species （Atractylis serratuloides and Salsola vermiculata） that are more tolerant to the new conditions. It is not clear whether these changes are due to anthropogenic reasons or climatic determinism. We have carried out a statistical analysis of the climate to detect putative rainfall changes during the 20th century in the Algerian steppes based on data from 9 meteorological stations, including 2 Saharan stations （El Oued and Touggourt）, 3 pre-Saharan stations （Biskra, Laghouat and Ain Sefra） and 4 steppe stations （Djelfa, Saida, M6ch6ria and E1-Bayadh） located in the arid high plains, which represent the bioclimate diversities of the region. Previous studies suggested that significant rainfall changes for the 20th century only had records in the south of the Oran region. Most of the studies, however, looked at restricted territories over limited periods, and did not integrate the rainiest period 2004-2014. Our work is designed to integrate all the longest time series of meteorological data available for the steppe regions of Algeria. Our results confirm the spatial rainfall distribution （significant rainfall changes only recorded in the southwestern region） evidenced by previous studies, and reveal a decreasing rainfall gradient from northeastern to southwestern Algeria. Moreover, the results reveal a trend of significant decrease of rainfall in the southern Oran region, marked by two drought periods in 1980- 1985 and 1999-2003. However, with the exception of the southwestern region, rainfall overall has not declined since the beginning of the 20th century. Pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate and saxagliptin ameliorate ulcerative colitis in rats

Objective: To evaluate the antioxidant, immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory activities of pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate and saxagliptin in rats with thioacetamide-induced ulcerative colitis. Methods: Animals were orally administered with a vehicle, sulfasalazine(500 mg/kg), pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate(100 mg/kg), and saxagliptin(10 mg/kg) for two weeks. Ulcerative colitis was induced by a single intrarectal instillation of thioacetamide on day 8. Colon samples were collected to assess mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK), phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase(ERK), c AMP response element-binding protein(CREB), interleukin-12(IL-12), caspase-3, β-defensin, inducible nitric oxide synthase(i NOS) and glucagon like peptide-1(GLP-1). Moreover, histopathological examination was performed. Results: Rats treated with thioacetamide caused increases in colonic MAPK, phosphorylated ERK, CREB, caspase-3, IL-12, β-defensin, i NOS, as well as decreases in body weight and GLP-1. In addition, distortion of colonic structure was found by histopathological examination. Pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate and saxagliptin mitigated colitis severity by improving body weight decrease and GLP-1, and reducing colonic MAPK, phosphorylated ERK, CREB, caspase-3, IL-12, β-defensin and i NOS. Conclusions: Pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate and saxagliptin are efficient against thioacetamide induced colitis through improving inflammatory and oxidative changes.
