Com.ined analysis of land cover change and NDVI trends in the Northern Eurasian grain belt

We present an approach to regional environ- m.ntal m.nitoring in the Northern Eurasian grain belt com.ining tim. series analysis of m.DIS norm.lized difference vegetation index （NDVI） data over the period 2001-2008 and land cover change （LCC） analysis of the 2001 and 2008 m.DIS Global Land Cover product （m.D 12Q 1）. NDVI trends were overwhelm.ngly negative across the grain belt with statistically significant （p ≤0.05） positive trends covering only 1% of the land surface. LCC was dom.nated by transitions between three classes; cropland, grassland, and a m.xed cropland/natural vegeta- tion m.saic. Com.ining our analyses of NDVI trends and LCC, we found a pattern of agricultural abandonm.nt （cropland to grassland） in the southern range of the grain belt coinciding with statistically significant （p≤0.05） negative NDVI trends and likely driven by regional drought. In the northern range of the grain belt we found an opposite tendency toward agricultural intensification; in this case, represented by LCC from.cropland m.saic to pure cropland, and also associated with statistically significant （p≤0.05） negative NDVI trends. Relatively sm.ll clusters of statistically significant （p ≤ 0.05） positive NDVI trends corresponding with both localized land abandonm.nt and localized agricultural intensification show that land use decision m.king is not uniform.across the region. Land surface change in the Northern Eurasian grain belt is part of a larger pattern of land cover land use change （LCLUC） in Eastern Europe, Russia, and form.r territories of the Soviet Union following realignm.nt of socialist land tenure and agricultural m.rkets. Here, we show that a com.ined analysis of LCC and NDVI trends provides a m.re com.lete picture of the com.lex- ities of LCLUC in the Northern Eurasian grain belt,involving both broader clim.tic forcing, and narrower anthropogenic im.acts, than m.ght be obtained from.either analysis alone.

Effects of tem.erature and water lim.tation on the germ.nation of Stipagrostis ciliata seeds collected from.Sidi Bouzid Governorate in Central Tunisia

m.st ecological studies in North Africa reveal a process of continuous degradation of rangeland ecosystem. as a result of overgrazing. This degradation appears across the decreasing of perennial grass diversity. Indeed, the m.jority of steppe ecosystem. are characterized by a low density of perennial grass species at present. This study evaluated the effects of tem.erature and water lim.tation on the seed germ.nation of Stipagrostis ciliata（Desf.） de Winter, a perennial grass species. The seeds were collected from.the Bou Hedm. Park, Sidi Bouzid Governorate, Central Tunisia. The therm.l tim. and hydrotherm.l tim. m.dels were used to describe the seed germ.nation of S. ciliata under different water potentials and tem.eratures. The germ.nation response of S. ciliata seeds in darkness was evaluated over a range of tem.eratures（15°C, 20°C, 25°C, 30°C and 35°C） and across a wide range of osm.tic potentials（0.0, –0.2, –0.6, –1.2, –1.6 and –2.0 m.a） of the polyethylene glycol（PEG6000） solutions at each tem.erature level. Am.ng the tested tem.eratures, 25°C was found to be the optim.l tem.erature to the germ.nation of S. ciliata seeds. The final germ.nation percentage（75.2%） was obtained with distilled water. The progressive decrease of osm.tic potential of the PEG6000 solutions inhibited the seed germ.nation. However, the num.er of days to first germ.nation was increased with a reduction of osm.tic potential. A significant positive relationship was identified between final germ.nation percentage of S. ciliata seeds and osm.tic potential of the PEG6000 solutions, with R^2 ranging from.0.5678 to 0.8761. Furtherm.re, a high degree of congruency between predicted and observed germ.nation tim. course curves was observed. In general, S. ciliata exhibits a significant adaptation capacity for water lim.tation and high tem.erature in arid ecosystem..

Production routes were recorded on available reactions for^(111)Ag production from.nuclear reactors or cyclotrons using a natural palladium.target based on^(110)Pd(n,γ)and^(110)pd(d,n)reactions,respectively.^(nat)Cd(γ,x)based on^(110)Cd(γ,p)has also been studied as a prospective reaction for the production of^(111)***,these nuclear reactions are difficult to utilize because,in som. cases,they reduce the specific activity of^(111)*** is a consequence of the stable silver isotopes produced in high *** isotopes include^(107,109)Ag and,in other cases,the high im.urity of silver radioisotopes,such as^(110)m.^(106)m.^(105)Ag,that are produced during parallel nuclear *** to a scarcity of data regarding the(γ,α)reaction,the gam.a reaction on natural indium.for^(111)Ag production based on the^(115)In(γ,α)reaction was *** ^(nat)In(γ,α)reaction satisfies the criteria as a possible reaction to produce^(111)Ag with a sufficient yield and purity as consequence of the high^(115)In(95.7%)abundance as an enriched form.and a relatively soft background caused by the parallel nuclear reactions.

Intragroup social dynam.cs vary with the presence of neighbors in a cooperatively breeding fish

Conflict is an in here nt part of social life in group-living species. Group m.m.ers m.y m.diate conflict through subm.ssive and affiliative behaviors, which can reduce aggression, stabilize dom.nance hierarchies, and foster group cohesion. The frequency and resolution of within-group conflict m.y vary with the presenee of neighboring groups. Neighbors can threaten the territory or resources of the whole group, prom.ting behaviors that foster within-group cohesion. However, neighbors m.y also foster conflict of interests am.ng group m.m.ers: opportunities for subordinate dispersal m.y alter conflict am.ng dom.nants and subordinates while opportunities for extrapair reproduction m.y increase conflict between m.tes. To understand how neighbors m.diate within-group conflict in the cooperatively breeding fish Neolam.rologus pulcher, we m.asured behavioral dynam.cs and social network structure in isolated groups, groups recently exposed to neighbors, and groups with established neighbors. Aggression and subm.ssion between the dom.nant m.le and fem.le pair were high in isolated groups, but dom.nant aggression was directly prim.rily at subordinates when groups had neighbors. This suggests that neighbors attenuate conflict between m.tes and foster conflict between dom.nants and subordinates. Further, aggression and subm.ssion between sim.larly sized group m.m.ers were m.st frequent when groups had neighbors, suggesting that neighbors induce rank-related conflict. We found relatively little change in within-group affiliative networks across treatm.nts, suggesting that the presence of neighbors does not alter behaviors associated with prom.ting group cohesion. Collectively, these results provide som. of the first em.irical insights into the extent to which intragroup behavioral networks are m.diated by intergroup interactions and the broader social context.
