Association of serum levels of transforming growth factor β1 with disease severity in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

Aim: Transforming growth factor (TGF) is overexpressed by tumor cells like other proteins and growth factors. TGF-β1 is then activated in the extracellular compartment but is unable to control cell proliferation because of the absence or low level of TGF-β1 receptors on the plasma membrane of malignant hepatocytes. This potential mechanism might interrupt the autocrine regulation loop of TGF-β1 and its blocking effect on cell proliferation. TGF-β1 is a multifunctional cytokine involved in the regulation of growth and differentiation of both normal and transformed cells. This study aimed to evaluate the association of serum levels of TGF-β1 with disease severity. Methods: A total of 180 subjects were classified into 6 groups according to Barcelona clinic liver cancer (BCLC) classification, 30 patients each:early (BCLC 0 and A), intermediate (BCLC B), advanced stage (BCLC C), and terminal stage (BCLC D) of hepatocellular carcinoma as well as 1 group of patients with cirrhosis only and 1 control group. Serum levels of TGFβ1 were measured. Results: Serum levels of TGF-β1 were significantly higher in patients with HCC (1,687.47 ± 1,462.81 pg/mL) than cirrhotics (487.98 ± 344.23 pg/mL, P < 0.001) and controls (250.16 ± 284.61 pg/mL, P <0.001). Conclusion: TGF-β1 may have a role in tumor growth and progression.

Analysis of Super Duplex Stainless Steel Properties as an Austenite-Ferrite Composite

Super duplex stainless steel (SDSS) is considered as a composite formed from a microstructure of an approximately equal mixture of two primary constituents (γ-austenite and α-ferrite phases) and the secondary precipitates (sigma, chi, alpha-prime, etc.). While the formation of these phases affects the properties of SDSS, however there are no rules that govern the relationship. In this work, the relationship between toughness as well as corrosion behavior of SDSS (UNS 32760) and the microstructure constituents has been experimentally investigated, and analyzed in view of the composite principles. Another two stainless steels namely;fully austenitic SASS (UNS N08367) and fully ferritic FSS (UNS S42900) are considered to simulate the constituent’s primary components in the composite which are austenite γ and ferrite α phases respectively. Samples of the composite and constituent’s steels are first subjected to solution annealing, where the composite steel has a microstructure of γ austenite and α ferrite grains. They were then subjected to similar different isothermal heat treatment cycles, for the formation of secondary phase precipitations within the transformation temperature ranges of each of γ and α primary grains. Impact toughness and corrosion (specific weight loss) tests were conducted on the annealed and isothermally treated samples. The composite rule of the mixtures (ROM) is used to analyze the relationship between the toughness and corrosion properties in the composite SDSS and the SASS and FSS constituent’s steels. The analysis indicates that in case of toughness, ROM applies well on the composite and constituents’ steels in the solution annealed and in isothermal treatment conditions, where better matching between experimental and calculated results is observed. Evaluation of Geological Hazards for Landuse Planning in Nabq Protectorate, Southeastern Sinai Using GIS Techniques

Nabq protectorate is one of wonderful natural places in Egypt. It is characterized by diversity of bio-lives such as mangrove forests, coral colonies, wild life plants and migratory birds. Ongoing growth of tourism industries at Sharm El Sheikh northward into the Nabq protectorate causes severe hazards on its natural resources. The aim of the present study is to assess the present geo-environmental hazards in the Nabq protectorate. Assessment includes the analysis of satellite images, topographical, geological and other ancillary geological data using GIS technology. GIS data analyses indicate that the area is under threat from some of geo-hazards. Rough topography and mass wasting with high probability of flash flooding threaten different constructions in this area. The mobilization of coastal sand dunes, wave action and tidal currents are natural impacts on Nabq ecosystems, where moved dunes leave clay soils that are removed in some places by tropical storms increasing sea water turbidity that threaten the corals and other living organisms in the tidal flat region. The seismic activity hazard in the study area is usually active on lineaments extending parallel to the trend of the Gulf of Aqaba-Dead Sea transform fault where the Nabq protectorate occupies its southern segment. Unwise planning activities destroy the natural environmental resources in Nabq area by construction of new resorts on mangrove forests, coral colonies and raised beaches. Hazard assessment identifies land suitability and land use maps that are clearly exhibit models of traditional dams and buffer strips on coastal zone and highways as well as around the Bedouin communities which are worked on tourism and fishing. These maps are urgent in need of an assessment and rehabilitation program to mitigate geo-hazard.

Non-Linear Analysis of Vibrations of Non-Linear System Subjected to Multi-Excitation Forces via a Non-Linear Absorber

The dynamic response of mechanical and civil structures subjected to high-amplitude vibration is often dangerous and undesirable. Sometimes controlled vibration is desirable as in the machinery used in the formation of rigid hard material as Ceramics and diamond. This process is done via the passive control methods. The main purpose of this paper is to how reduction of vibration of nonlinear system subjected to multi-excitation forces via a nonlinear absorber. The nonlinear differential equations describing the model, which describe ultrasonic cutting machine are solved by using perturbation method. The effects of different parameter on the response of the system are studied. The stability of the numerical solution is investigated by using frequency response equations and phase-plane method. The simulation results are achieved using Matlab and Maple programs. A comparison is made with the available published work.

Kinetic and Equilibrium Isotherms Studies of Adsorption of Pb(II) from Water onto Natural Adsorbent

In this research dobera leaves (DL), an agricultural waste, available in large quantity in south region of Saudi Arabia, were used as low-cost adsorbent for removal of metal ions such as Pb(II). Batch operation was used to study the equilibrium behavior of DL. The effects of initial concentration of Pb(II), solution pH, contact time and adsorbent dose were evaluated. To study the kinetics of adsorption of Pb(II) onto DL, pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion were used. Adsorption process undergoes pseudo-second-order kinetic as proved by the high value of R2. Furthermore, to design the equilibrium data of adsorption of process, four adsorption isotherm models such as Langmuir, Freundlich Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) were used. It is found that Langmuir equation has the highest value of R2 (0.999) compared with other models. In presences of a mixture of Pb(II)/Ni(II), DL were found to be selective for Pb(II) ions with a high adsorptive capacity of 83 mg/g and show favorable adsorption with RL 90%) from drinking water with less competition of other ions present in water.

The Impact of Marine Water on Different Types of Coarse Aggregate of Geopolymer Concrete

This research studies the impact of different types of coarse aggregate on the behavior of geopolymer concrete based on both fly ash (FA) and ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) in different marine environments. Aiming to solve the problems caused by the construction and demolition waste and the depletion of natural aggregates, in the present study coarse recycled aggregates is used to produce new green concrete with a fly ash-slag based geopolymer. By this examination, the research seeks to improve the quality and productivity of concrete used in construction and hydraulic projects. For this research, four mixtures containing different types of coarse aggregate in two different water environments were used. The utilized mixtures contained natural aggregate concrete (NAC) such as basalt and crushed marble. Also, recycled coarse aggregate concrete (RAC), which totally replaced natural aggregate, was presented in this paper such as crushed concrete and crushed ceramic. For this study, in the sieve analysis;specific and unit weights, was recorded. Furthermore, the mechanical properties were determined, using a compressive test that was conducted on the 7th, 28th, 56th and 90th days at different water environments;potable water (PW) and sea water (SW). Durability test was also performed for total absorption measurement. Results indicated that geopolymer concrete exhibits better strength in marine environments than in those of potable water. Results also showed that crushed marble (CMA) exhibits higher compressive strength and durability.

The Surface Reactivity of Pure and Monohydrogenated Nanocones Formed from Graphene Sheets

A systematic computational study of surface reactivity for pure and mono-hydrogenated carbon nanocoes (CNCs) formed from graphene sheets as functions of disclination angle, cone size and hydrogenation sites has been investigated through density functional (DFT) calculations and at the B3LYP/3-21G level of theory. Five disclination angles (60°, 120°, 180°, 240° and 300°) are applied and at any disclination angle four structures with different sizes are studied. For comparison, pure and mono-hydrogenated boron nitride nanocones (BNNCs) with disclination angles 60°, 120°, 180°, 240° and 300° are also investigated. The hydrogenation is done on three different sites, HS1 (above the first neighbor atom of the apex atoms), HS2 (above one atom of the apex atoms) and HS3 (above one atom far from the apex atoms). Our calculations show that the highest surface reactivity for pure CNCs and BNNCs at disclination angles 60°, 180° and 300° is 23.50 Debye for B41N49H10 cone and at disclination angles 120° and 240° is 15.30 Debye for C94H14 cone. For mono-hydrogenated CNCs, the highest surface reactivity is 22.17 Debye for C90H10-HS3 cone at angle 300° and for mono-hydrogenated BNNCs the highest surface reactivity is 28.97 Debye for B41N49H10-HS1 cone when the hydrogen atom is adsorbed on boron atom at cone angle 240°.

Volumetric Assessment of Corticospinal Tract Infiltration by Astrocytoma Using Diffusion Tensor Tractography

Objectives: The aim of the study is to assess volumetric Corticospinal Tract infiltration by Astro-cytoma using Diffusion Tensor Tractography. Material and Methods: Preoperative, anatomic (T1- and T2-weighted) and diffusion tensor MRI were performed in 9 patients with supratentorial gliomas (WHO grade II and III). The tumors were manually segmented from the T1- and T2-weighted MRI, and their volume calculated. A three-dimensional tractography was performed in each case. A second segmentation and volume measurement was performed on the tumor regions intersecting adjacent white matter fiber tracts. Results: We identified that white matter tracts were infiltrated by 6 Astrocytoma tumors. The median tumor volume (±standard deviation) in our patient population was 33 ± 26.82 ml. The median tumor volume (±standard deviation) infiltrating white matter fiber tracts was 4.15 ± 9.23 ml. The median fraction of tumor volume infiltrating white matter fiber tracts was 26.3% ± 10.1%. Conclusions: Diffusion tensor MR Tractography is a reliable preoperative assessment tool since it detects extensive white matter infiltration by Astrocytoma irrespective of brain tumors volume. Recommendations: Prospective large population studies are required to clarify how infiltration relates to tumor location.

Assessment of Endometrial Carcinoma Markers and Hormone Receptors Profile before and after Bariatric Surgery: A Clinico-Pathological-Immunohistochemical Study

Background: Obesity is a major risk factor for endometrial carcinoma, and we aim to assess markers of carcinogenesis including PTEN and Ki-67 and hormone receptors profile including ER, PR and AR before and after bariatric surgery to find out its effects in reducing endometrial carcinoma risk in morbid obese females. Patients and methods: The study included 80 females with morbid obesity (BMI > 40 Kg/m2) who underwent bariatric surgery. All were sampled by Pipelle biopsy at baseline and 12 months after operation and examined histopathologically and immunohistochemically for Ki-67, PTEN, ER, PR and AR. Results: Sixty two out of 80 (62/80) females showed no pathological abnormalities;4 had polyps;7 had simple endometrial hyperplasia;4 had atypical endometrial hyperplasia and 3 had endometrial carcinoma. In total, 34 females underwent gastric bypass operation (42.5%) and 46 underwent a sleeve gastrectomy operation (57.5%). There was a statistically significant difference between baseline weight and BMI before and after surgery (p < 0.001). Of the 7 women with simple hyperplasia, resolution occurred in 5 within 7 months of surgery. Three of 4 females with atypical hyperplasia (AH) showed resolution after 9 months. Mean Ki-67 score was lower at 12 months (p < 0.001) after surgery. 43/77 (55.8%) baseline biopsies were glandular PTEN null, including 9/15 of the women with baseline endometrial abnormalities, of whom 5/15 regained glandular PTEN expression as their endometrial abnormalities resolved. There was a significant reduction in ER score after surgery (p < 0.001). PR H-scores were not significantly different post-operatively (p = 0.193). AR H-scores were higher significantly in pre-operative biopsies than post-operative ones (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Females with morbid obesity have a higher risk of harboring endometrial abnormalities even if asymptomatic.
