An update on the maize zein-gene family in the post-genomics era

Maize(Zea mays)is a cereal crop of global food ***,the deficiency of essential amino acids,more importantly lysine,methionine and tryptophan,in the major seed storage zein proteins makes corn nutritionally of low value for human *** idea of improving maize nutritional value prompted the search for maize natural mutants harboring low zein contents and higher amount of *** studies resulted in the identification of more than dozens of maize opaque mutants in the previous few decades,o2 mutant being the most extensively studied ***,the high lysine contents but soft kernel texture and chalky endosperm halted the widespread application and commercial success of maize opaque mutants,which ultimately paved the way for the development of Quality Protein Maize(QPM)by modifying the soft endosperm of o2 mutant into lysine-rich hard *** previous few decades have witnessed a marked progress in maize zein *** includes elucidation of molecular mechanism underlying the role of different zein genes in seed endosperm development by cloning different components of zein family,exploring the general organization,function and evolution of zein family members within maize species and among other cereals,and elucidating the cis-and trans-regulatory elements modulating the regulation of different molecular players of maize seed endosperm *** current advances in high quality reference genomes of maize lines B73 and Mo17 plus the completion of ongoing pan genome sequencing projects of more maize lines with NGS technologies are expected to revolutionize maize zein gene research in near *** review highlights the recent advances in QPM development and its practical application in the post genomic era,genomic and physical composition and evolution of zein family,and expression,regulation and downstream role of zein genes in endosperm ***,recent genomic tools and methods developed for functional valid

Wheat Straw Burial Improves Physiological Traits, Yield and Grain Quality of Rice by Regulating Antioxidant System and Nitrogen Assimilation Enzymes under Alternate Wetting and Drying Irrigation

Wheat straw burial has great potential to sustain rice production under alternate wetting and drying(AWD)irrigation.A field experiment was conducted with three wheat straw burial treatments,including without straw burial(NSB),with light straw burial of 300 kg/hm^(2)(LSB)and dense straw burial of 800 kg/hm^(2)(DSB),as well as three AWD regimes:alternate wetting/moderate drying(AWMD),alternate wetting/severe drying(AWSD)and alternate wetting/critical drying(AWCD).The rice growth and grain quality were higher in LSB and NSB than those in NSB under the same AWD *** AWMD×DSB treatment resulted in the highest yield,brown rice rate,milled rice rate,amylose content and protein ***,the AWCD×NSB treatment led to the lowest yield,brown rice rate,milled rice rate,amylose content and protein *** active absorption area and nitrate reductase activity of roots were higher in the AWMD×DSB treatment than those in the AWCD×NSB treatment,as the former increased organic carbon and nitrogen contents in the rhizosphere,whereas the latter reduced their *** soluble protein content and glutamine synthetase activity were greater in the AWMD×DSB treatment than those in the AWCD×NSB *** activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase were higher in the AWMD×DSB treatment compared with the AWCD×NSB treatment,leading to the amelioration of oxidative cell injury,as shown by a lower malonaldehyde *** study suggested that farmers should implement AWMD irrigation after leaving the straw residues in the field,followed by deep tillage to improve soil quality and mitigate the drought stress cycles of *** approach can improve rice growth and grain quality and alleviate the problems of disposal of straw residues and water scarcity for sustainable rice production.
