Effects of Nigella sativa on outcome of hepatitis C in Egypt

AIM: To evaluate the safety, efficacy and tolerability of Nigella sativa (N. sativa ) in patients with hepatitis C not eligible for interferon (IFN)-α. METHODS: Thirty patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, who were not eligible for IFN/ribavirin therapy, were included in the present study. Inclusion criteria included: patients with HCV with or without cirrhosis, who had a contraindication to IFN-α therapy, or had refused or had a financial constraint to IFN-α therapy. Exclusion criteria included: patients on IFN-α therapy, infection with hepatitis B or hepatitis Ⅰ virus, hepatocellular carcinoma, other malignancies, major severe illness, or treatment non-compliance. Various parameters, including clinical parameters, complete blood count, liver function, renal function, plasma glucose, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and polymerase chain reaction, were all assessed at baseline and at the end of the study. Clinical assessment included: hepato and/ or splenomegaly, jaundice, palmar erythema, flapping tremors, spider naevi, lower-limb edema, and ascites. N. sativa was administered for three successive months at a dose of (450 mg three times daily). Clinical response and incidence of adverse drug reactions were assessed initially, periodically, and at the end of the study. RESULTS: N. sativa administration significantly improved HCV viral load (380808.7 ± 610937 vs 147028.2 ± 475225.6, P = 0.001) and TAC (1.35 ± 0.5 vs 1.612 ± 0.56, P = 0.001). After N. sativa administration, the following laboratory parameters improved: total protein (7.1 ± 0.7 vs 7.5 ± 0.8, P = 0.001), albumin (3.5 ± 0.87 vs 3.69 ± 0.91, P = 0.008), red blood cell count (4.13 ± 0.9 vs 4.3 ± 0.9, P = 0.001), and platelet count (167.7 ± 91.2 vs 198.5 ± 103, P = 0.004). Fasting blood glucose (104.03 ± 43.42 vs 92.1 ± 31.34, P = 0.001) and postprandial blood glucose (143.67 ± 72.56 vs 112.1 ± 42.9, P = 0.001) were significantly decreased in both diabetic and non-diabetic HCV patients. Carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogels were developed through crosslinking process using eco-friendly crosslinkers such as maleic,succinic,and citric *** cellulose was prepared from the cellulosic fraction of olive industry residues.A series of hydrogels with varying crosslinker acid concentrations,reaction times,and reaction temperatures was produced to study the swelling capacities and gel fraction of the obtained *** study pertains to the preparation of antimicrobial nanocomposite hydrogels through in-situ incorporation of the silver nanoparticles during the crosslinking *** nanoparticles were prepared by reduction of AgNO3 with leaves of Ricinus *** particle size of prepared silver nanoparticles was detected by transmission electron microscopy(TEM).Chemical structure and morphological characterizations of the prepared hydrogels were performed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX).Finally,the antimicrobial activity of the loaded silver hydrogels against Gram negative(G-ve),Gram positive(G+ve),and Candida albicans yeast was demonstrated.

Neutron detection is used in a wide range of applications in nuclear physics,radiation protection,nuclear fuel cycle,reactor instrumentation,security and industrial *** the detectors used in this field,we notice the gas-filled 3He proportional counters which have been one of the main detecting tools for thermal and cold neutron detection for many *** last characteristic has ensured that this detector is one of the best tools for thermal neutron flux measurements in a nuclear reactor *** the instrumentation and detection laboratory of the Nuclear Research Center,of Birine,we are working toward the design and the development of this type of detectors,indeed,several prototypes of neutron detectors have been realized including the 3He proportional *** this paper,we will present the experimental steps and the obtained results to carry out a 3He proportional counter prototype that was fully developed and tested in our laboratory.A comparison study was made between our detector and a commercial cylindrical 3He neutron detector which was considered in this work as a reference detector:LND252(3He)-*** results showed that the characteristics of the gas amplification and the counting plateau for the two counters reference LND 252(3He)-PC and our prototype was of the same order of *** experimental tests show that our developed prototype perfect fit with the standard International Electrotechnical Commission(IEC,***)in the operating principle,the technology adopted and obtained technical specifications.

Bifurcation-based fractional-order PI~λD~μ controller design approach for nonlinear chaotic systems

We propose a novel approach called the robust fractional-order proportional-integral-derivative（FOPID）controller, to stabilize a perturbed nonlinear chaotic system on one of its unstable fixed points. The stability analysis of the nonlinear chaotic system is made based on the proportional-integral-derivative actions using the bifurcation diagram. We extract an initial set of controller parameters, which are subsequently optimized using a quadratic criterion. The integral and derivative fractional orders are also identified by this quadratic criterion. By applying numerical simulations on two nonlinear systems, namely the multi-scroll Chen system and the Genesio-Tesi system,we show that the fractional PI~λD~μ controller provides the best closed-loop system performance in stabilizing the unstable fixed points, even in the presence of random perturbation.

Interactions between Entomopathogenic Nematodes and Entomophagous Insects

The objective of this review article is to clarify the different interactions between entomopathogenic nematodes, as bio-control agents, against other bio-control agents (parasitoids and predators) proposed by the researchers. Thus, it gives clear information concerning the potential of combining them as a part of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs against insect pests. Some laboratory studies showed that the treatment of predacious insects by entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) at different concentrations can infect and kill the treated larva, nymphs and adults of predators. The percentages of mortality were found to be high (up to 100%), moderate (15% - 35%) or low (3% - 7%). Other studies revealed the resistant of treated predators to nematode-infection. Some predators that were offered infected prey avoid feeding on such prey and, in contrast, the soil predators (ants and mites) consumed the offered cadavers as well as the infective juvenile of the nematodes and did not show any detrimental effects. Mostly, parasitoids cannot complete their development inside or on nematode-infected hosts if parasitism occurs before or early after infection. The parasitoid females may avoid laying eggs in the infected hosts or cannot discriminate between healthy and infected hosts.
