3-Bromopyruvate(3BP) is a new, promising anticancer alkylating agent with several notable functions. In addition to inhibiting key glycolysis enzymes including hexokinase II and lactate dehydrogenase(LDH), 3BP also selectively inhibits mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, angiogenesis, and energy production in cancer cells. Moreover, 3BP induces hydrogen peroxide generation in cancer cells(oxidative stress effect) and competes with the LDH substrates pyruvate and lactate. There is only one published human clinical study showing that 3BP was effective in treating fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma. LDH is a good measure for tumor evaluation and predicts the outcome of treatment better than the presence of a residual tumor mass. According to the Warburg effect, LDH is responsible for lactate synthesis, which facilitates cancer cell survival, progression, aggressiveness, metastasis, and angiogenesis. Lactate produced through LDH activity fuels aerobic cell populations inside tumors via metabolic symbiosis. In melanoma, the most deadly skin cancer, 3BP induced necrotic cell death in sensitive cells, whereas high glutathione(GSH) content made other melanoma cells resistant to 3BP. Concurrent use of a GSH depletor with 3BP killed resistant melanoma cells. Survival of melanoma patients was inversely associated with high serum LDH levels, which was reported to be highly predictive of melanoma treatment in randomized clinical trials. Here, we report a 28-year-old man presented with stage IV metastatic melanoma affecting the back, left pleura, and lung. The disease caused total destruction of the left lung and a high serum LDH level(4,283 U/L). After ethics committee approval and written patient consent, the patient received 3BP intravenous infusions(1-2.2 mg/kg), but the anticancer effect was minimal as indicated by a high serum LDH level. INTRODUCTION Preservation of the freshwater resources is a big challenge for a healthy civilized *** water consumption increased more than twice the population increase rate,drinking water pollution and freshwater shortage increased dramatically during the last decades(Kar et al.,2012;Mueller and Nowack,2010).Only 0.01%of freshwater resources are suitable for human needs(Rashid et al.,2019),even in the areas of abundant freshwater(Yeston et al.,2006).By 2050,over 5 billion of the world population will be under severe fresh water supply conditions due to climate change and urbanization exacerbate(Sealy,2019;Oves et al.,2015;Kar et al.,2012).Currently,one billion people drink unhygienic water,especially in developing countries which leads to severe waterborne diseases which might cause death(Aminiyan et al.,2018).Twelve million people die every year due to this problem(Zhao et al.,2019;Oves et al.,2015).

Investigation of climate change impacts on food security has become a global hot *** so,efforts to mitigate these issues in arid regions have been ***,in this paper,further research is discussed based on data obtained from various crop and climate *** DSSATcrop models(CMs)(CERESWheat and N-Wheat)were calibrated with two wheat cultivars(Gemiza9 and Misr1).A baseline simulation(1981-2010)was compared with different scenarios of simulations using three Global Climate Models(GCMs)for the 2030s,2050s and *** impacts of climate change were assessed using the GCMs and CMs under the high emission Representative Concentration Pathway(RCP8.5).Results predicted decreased wheat grain yields by a mean of 8.7%,11.4%and 13.2%in the 2030s,2050s and 2080s,respectively,relative to the baseline *** impacts of climatic change are probable,despite some uncertainties within the GCMs(i.e.,2.1%,5.0%and 8.0%)and CMs(i.e.,2.2%,6.0%and 9.2%).Changing the planting date with a scenario of plus or minus 5 or 10 days from the common practice was assessed as a potentially effective adaptation option,which may partially offset the negative impacts of climate *** the sowing date by 10 days(from 20 November to 30 November)proved the optimum scenario and decreased further reduction in wheat yields resulting from climate change to 5.2%,6.8%and 8.5%in the 2030s,2050s and 2080s,respectively,compared with the 20 November *** planting 5-days earlier scenario showed a decreased impact on climate change ***,the 10-days early planting scenario increased yield reduction under projected climate *** cultivar Misr1 was more resistant to rising temperature than *** the negative impacts of projected climate change on wheat production,water use efficiency would slightly *** ensemble of multi-model estimated impacts and adaptation uncertainties of climate change can assist decision-makers in planning clima

Seasonal changes in testicular ultrasonogram pixel-intensity and their association with semen characteristics in rams

Objective:To establish reference values for pixel intensity of testicular ultrasonogram of rams in breeding and non-breeding seasons,and to investigate if the seasonal changes in testicular echogenicity and heterogeneity are associated with semen ***:Five Awassi rams aged 3-5 years old and weighing 45-60 kg were subjected to ultrasonographic scanning of the testes twice monthly for one year(from January 2018 to December 2018),together with semen collection and evaluation of ejaculate volume,sperm motility,sperm concentration,sperm morphology and *** ejaculate volume was determined in a graduated collection tube(scale of 0.1 mL).Mass and individual sperm motility was expressed in percentage of motile spermatozoa under optical microscope equipped with a warm *** concentration was determined by using a Neubauer *** smears stained with eosin-nigrosin were used to determine the percentage of live spermatozoa and sperm cell morphology by using a light ***:The mean testicular pixel intensity was the lowest in winter and increased gradually from breeding season to non-breeding season,reaching its maximum value in summer(P<0.05).Pixel intensity was found to have a significant negative correlation with progressive motility(r=-0.605,P<0.05),and sperm concentration(r=-0.619,P<0.05).It is also positively correlated with the percentage of sperm morphological abnormalities(r=0.666,P<0.05).Conclusions:Pixel intensity values of testicular ultrasonogram in rams undergo marked seasonal changes that are associated with fluctuations in photoperiod and ambient *** resulting values of testicular echogenicity(pixel intensity)throughout the year provide useful reference values for predicting the testicular function in Awassi rams.

Impact of designed infection control educational program on nurses’knowledge and compliance with standard precautions at maternity hospitals

Objectives:This study aimed to assess the nurses’knowledge and compliance with infection control standard precautions and evaluate the impact of the designed infection control educational program on nurses’knowledge and compliance with standard precautions at the maternity *** and Methods:A quasi‑experimental one‑group pretest‑posttest design was used on convenient sample of 60 nurses working at Obstetrics and Gynecological hospital in Cairo University Hospital,Kasr El Ainy,who received“designed infection control educational program”for 6 *** data were collected through the questionnaire comprising demographics,knowledge,and compliance with standard precautions *** nurses’knowledge and compliance score were compared before and after ***:The studied nurses had higher level of knowledge(85.3%)and compliance(92.8%)regarding infection control standard precautions after the educational program compared to before the *** results revealed statistically significant difference between before and after the program regarding nurses’knowledge score(15.5±2.9 vs.17.1±1.6,P<0.001)and compliance score(58.5±13.2 vs.74.3±5.1,P<0.001).In addition,there was insignificant relation between nurses’knowledge and compliance with standard precautions both before(r=0.952,P=0.474)and after educational program(r=0.164,P=0.223).Conclusion:The nurses’level of knowledge and compliance regarding infection control standard precautions was significantly improved after the ***,it is recommended that periodical educational programs regarding the standard precautions of infection control are essential for nurses at maternity hospital.

Incidence and risk factors of post-phototherapy neonatal rebound hyperbilirubinemia

Background To determine the incidence and risk factors of post-phototherapy rebound hyperbilirubinemia because data about bilirubin rebound in neonates are lacking and few studies have concerned this condition. Methods A prospective observational study was conducted on 500 neonates with indirect hyperbilirubinemia who were treated according to standard guidelines. Total serum bilirubin (TSB) was measured at 24–36 h after phototherapy;significant bilirubin rebound (SBR) is considered as increasing TSB that needs reinstitution of phototherapy. Results A total of 124 (24.9%) neonates developed SBR with TSB increased by 3.4 (2.4–11.2) mg/dL after stopping pho-totherapy. Multiple logistic regression model revealed the following significant risk factors for rebound: low birth weight (B = 1.3,P < 0.001, OR 3.5), suspected sepsis (B = 2.5,P < 0.001, OR 12.6), exposure to intensive phototherapy (B = 0.83, P= 0.03, OR 2.3), hemolysis (B = 1.2,P < 0.001, OR 3.1), high discharge bilirubin level (B = 0.3,P = 0.001, OR 1.3), and short duration of conventional phototherapy (B = ? 1.2,P < 0.001, OR 0.3). Conclusions SBR should be considered in neonates with hemolysis, low birth weight, suspected sepsis, short duration of conventional phototherapy, exposure to intensive phototherapy, and relatively high discharge TSB. These risk factors should be taken into account when planning post-phototherapy follow-up.

Adjuvant Pelvic Radiotherapy *** Chemoradiotherapy for High-Risk StageⅠ-ⅡEndometrial Carcinoma

Objective To explore if the addition of adjuvant chemotherapy with paclitaxel and carboplatin to radiotherapy confers an advantage for overall survival （OAS）, and progression free survival （PFS）; to assess the incidence of relapses over standard pelvic radiotherapy; and to evaluate the related toxicity in high-risk stage I-II endometrial carcinoma Methods Medical records were reviewed to identify high-risk stage I-1I endometrial carcinoma cases treated in the Clinical Oncology and Nuclear Medicine department between 2002 and 2008 with adjuvant radiotherapy alone （arm Ⅰ）（57 patients） or with sequential carboplatin （AUCS-6） and paclitaxel （135-175 mg/m^2） with radiotherapy （arm Ⅱ）（51 patients）. Radiotherapy was performed through the four-field box technique at doses of 45-50 Gy （1.8 Gy/day × 5 days/week）. Results The toxicity was manageable and predominantly hematologic with a grade 3 neutropenia and thrombocytopenia in 9.8% and 6% of the patients in arm Ⅰ and arm Ⅱ, respectively, without febrile neutropenia. All patients experienced hair loss. Chernoradiotherapy arm was associated with a lower incidence rate of relapse （9.8% vs. 22.7%）. After a median follow-up period of 48 months, the 5-year OAS and PFS rates for chemoradiotherapy-treated patients were significantly more favorable than those who did not receive chemotherapy （P=0.02 and 0.03, respectively）. In arm I, the OAS and PFS rates were 73.7% and 66.7% compared with those in arm II, whose rates were 90.2% and 84.3%. Conclusions Adjuvant chemoradiation with paclitaxel and carboplatin improved the survival rates and decreased the recurrence rates in patients with high-risk stage Ⅰ-Ⅱ endometrial carcinoma. Chemotherapy was associated with an acceptable rate of toxicity. However, a prospective study with a larger number of patients is needed to define a standard adjuvant treatment for high-risk stage Ⅰ-Ⅱ endometrial carcinoma.

Truthfulness of the Existence of the Pelusium Megashear Fault System, East of Cairo, Egypt

The so-called Pelusium Megashear System (PMS), consists of echelon left-lateral megashears crossing Africa from the Nile-Delta since the Precambrian times. Although this system is questioned by some scientists, its existence is sup- ported by others. This research work provides evidences for the existence of the PMS near Egypt’s capital (Cairo city). Evidence is interpreted from gravity, magnetic, and seismological data, which proves that it has been in existence since 2800 BC [1]. To support the existence of this fault zone system, all available tectonic data are reviewed;new magnetic tilt derivative TDR map and recent fault plane solution map are introduced. Moreover available earthquake catalogue for historical and recent occurrences in and around the Pelusium zone is compiled. The collected recent and historical seismicity data is supporting the existence of PMS system. The faults excluded from magnetic maps were found to be in a good agreement with tectonic and gravity data introduced by some authors. Available fault plane solutions for old and recent earthquakes gave rise to the hypothesis that the PMS is right lateral shear system. Additionally, the Pelusium zone is evaluated for the rate of seismic activity. The hazards of these zones are studied by calculating the earthquake recurrence rates using Richter-Gutenberg formula (LogN = a – bM). A statistical method is applied to exclude the effect of lack of data due to little seismograph station in the early records, or lack of population density. The Pelusium Megashear fault system proved to be active at least in Egypt, however, it plays a role only over big time window, may be thousands of years to dissipate stresses accumulated within the west of Sinai Peninsula in the African Eurasian-Arabian plates. Finally integrated tectonic model including the effect of PMS is introduced to solve the complexity of intraplate tectonics in Northern Egypt.
