Impact of Mating Frequency on Fecundity, Fertility and Longevity of Red Palm Weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus （Olivier）（Coleoptera： Curuclionidae）

The reproductive behavior of red palm weevil, Rhynchophorusferrugineus Olivier was studied in laboratory with several sets of unmated females paired with unmated males for different periods. The treatments in these controlled mating experiments included single mating, multiple mating for 24 h, multiple mating weekly, multiple mating on alternate days and multiple mating uninterrupted with a control group. During the study, observations were made on the number of eggs laid, incubation period, hatching percentage, ovipositional periods and adult longevity. Though unmated females laid a large number of eggs, these were infertile. This study clearly showed significant differences in the egg-laying capacity of females exposed to different frequencies of mating. The average number of eggs laid varied from 98.9 ± 9.7 eggs in a single-time mated female to 195.8± 24.3 eggs in females allowed to mate on alternate days throughout their life. As far as the percentage of egg-hatching is concerned, there were significant differences in single and multiple mated females with 22.4 ± 3.3% hatching in one time mated females as compared to 85.2 ± 1.9% in alternate day mated females. This study also showed direct impact of female matings on the number of eggs laid and their hatching percentage. Moreover, the unmated and mated female groups showed no significant differences in oviposition and post-ovipositional period and also there was very little difference in male and female adult longevity.

Post Tonsillectomy Bleeding among Children in a Tertiary Hospital in the Kingdom of Bahrain: Two Years Experience

Background: Palatine tonsils are part of the immune system located within the Waldeyer’s ring, they are prone to infections, hypertrophy or both. These conditions are known as tonsil diseases that usually require surgical removal through tonsillectomy. Tonsillectomy is one of the most common procedures done for children but it is challenged by the occurrence of complications, especially post tonsillectomy bleeding (PTB). In the current study, the incidence of post tonsillectomy bleeding in children younger than 14 years undergoing tonsillectomy in Salmaniya Medical Complex is evaluated and their demographic data and risk factors are assessed. Method: Pediatric patients who are younger than 14 years with postoperative tonsillectomy bleeding that were treated in Salmaniya Medical Complex between the period of January 2018 and December 2019 were retrospectively studied for risk factors. Results: A total of 1161 patients within the age range of 2 - 13 years old underwent tonsillectomy in Salmaniya Medical Complex from the period of January 2018 to December 2019. Twenty-eight pediatric patients had post-tonsillectomy bleeding (PTB) during the study period with an incidence of 2.4% of the total number of pediatric tonsillectomies done in our institute. The majority were male patients and the mean age was 6.2 years. The main indication of tonsillectomy for those with bleeding was recurrent tonsillitis. A second surgery was needed in 64.5% to control the bleeding. The size of the tonsil, the level of the surgeon and the season at which the tonsillectomy was done did not seem to have any effect on the incidence of post-tonsillectomy bleeding (PTB). Conclusion: The incidence of post tonsillectomy bleeding (PTB) in Salmaniya Medical Complex is 2.4%, which makes it a common complication for a common surgery irrelevant to any patient, surgeon or climate related factors.

Immune Response after Hepatitis B Vaccination among Egyptian Medical Students in Nile Delta

Background: Early promotion of hepatitis B (HB) vaccination among health care workers is an important component of the HBV infection control. No available data assess immune response of HB vaccination among Egyptian medical students. Objective: we conducted this study to evaluate the immune response among medical students after completion of their vaccination schedule. Methods: A total of 150 Egyptian medical students were included. Three doses of recombinant HB vaccine had been administered to all participating students at 0, 1 and 6 months. Antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen (Anti-HBs) titers, hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), and total antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) were measured by enzyme immunoassay, 1 to 2 months after completion of vaccination course. Results: Among 150 students included, the mean age was 22.4 ± 1.7 years (range 18 - 28 years). Fifty nine (39.4%) were males and 91 (60.6%) were females. All students have anti-HBs levels more than 100 IU/L. The mean anti-HBs of included students was 8994.2 ± 6373.1 IU/L. There was no significant difference of anti-HBs levels regarding age, sex, residence or body mass index distribution. Conclusion: Early HB vaccination of health care workers is associated with good immune response and should be encouraged.

Introduction: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are prevalent symptoms after laparoscopic surgeries with an incidence rate of (54% - 79%) in bariatric procedures. Despite its popularity, limited studies assessed the effect of antiemetics for PONV prophylaxis after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). The aim of this trail is to compare the effectiveness of a single pre-induction intravenous dose of Palonosetron versus Ondansetron for prophylaxis of PONV, 24 hours after LSG. Subjects and Methods: This prospective randomized controlled double-blind parallel-group study was conducted from May till December 2019. Recruited patients were consented and randomized using a closed envelop method into two groups with fifty patients each. The total number of nausea and vomiting attacks in the 24 hours postoperatively was considered as a primary end point. The secondary end points were the frequency of nausea, retching and vomiting attacks in the 24 hours post-surgery. The severity of nausea was evaluated using a 10 cm visual analogue scale (VAS). Neutropenic enterocolitis in pediatric leukemia patients treated with intensive chemotherapy in Upper Egypt

Importance: In low resource countries, there has been scarcity of research on the risk factors associated with neutropenic enterocolitis, a serious complication that commonly develops during treatment of cancer ***: To identify the pattern of intestinal complications in pediatric leukemia patients treated with intensive chemotherapy, including those with neutropenic enterocolitis;to assess the outcome;and to evaluate the risk factors associated with the mortality in these ***: During the period from June 2015 to December 2016, a prospective study was carried out on pediatric patients diagnosed with acute leukemia who received induction/or re-induction phases of chemotherapy at South Egypt Cancer Institute. Patients with documented episodes of intestinal complications were included in the study. Recovery or death from an episode of intestinal complication was utilized as the primary outcome measure for the study. Using univariable and multivariable methods, potential risk factors associated with mortality were delineated by logistic regression analysis, both for the entire intestinal complications episodes as a whole and for those episodes of neutropenic enterocolitis ***: Out of 88 documented episodes of intestinal complications from 77 patients;58 episodes were identified as neutropenic enterocolitis from 47 patients. In those patients who were having episodes of neutropenic enterocolitis, the presence of abdominal tenderness (OR 4.529, 95%CI 1.062-19.317,P = 0.041);a longer duration of neutropenia (OR 1.215, 95%CI 1.030-1.434,P = 0.021);and hemodynamic instability (OR 17.023, 95%CI 4.095-70.772,P < 0.001), were found to be independently associated with worse ***: In Upper Egypt, the use of intensive systemic chemotherapy during the induction phase of acute leukemia was found to be associated with potentially lethal intestinal complications. A high index of clinical suspicion is warranted.

Ergogenic Capacity of a 7-Chinese Traditional Medicine Extract in Aged Mice

The ergogenic properties of a 7-Chinese traditional medicine water extract (Ligustrum lucidum ait, LLA), which is composed of the essences of Lycii fructus, Crataegi fructus, Phyllanthi fructus, Chrysanthemi flos, Coicis semen, Ganoderma lucidum, and Zizyphi fructus, were studied using aged mice. Mice were chronically (one month) administered LLA (0.1% and 1%) in the drinking water. Mice pre-treated with LLA showed a good appetite;however, they exhibited a lower rate of body weight increase compared to control mice. In mice subjected to the rotarod test, 1% LLA treatment provided effective adaption to fatigue and significantly increased the duration of mice on the rotarod. In locomotor activity test, 1% LLA potentiated mice mobility and significantly increased rearing behavior. In the antioxidant experiment, 1% LLA treatment significantly increased superoxide dismutase activity in the spleen and liver glutathione levels. These findings suggest that LLA may be utilized as an antifatigue agent, which may function through its antioxidant activity.

Non-Linear Analysis of Vibrations of Non-Linear System Subjected to Multi-Excitation Forces via a Non-Linear Absorber

The dynamic response of mechanical and civil structures subjected to high-amplitude vibration is often dangerous and undesirable. Sometimes controlled vibration is desirable as in the machinery used in the formation of rigid hard material as Ceramics and diamond. This process is done via the passive control methods. The main purpose of this paper is to how reduction of vibration of nonlinear system subjected to multi-excitation forces via a nonlinear absorber. The nonlinear differential equations describing the model, which describe ultrasonic cutting machine are solved by using perturbation method. The effects of different parameter on the response of the system are studied. The stability of the numerical solution is investigated by using frequency response equations and phase-plane method. The simulation results are achieved using Matlab and Maple programs. A comparison is made with the available published work.

Association of serum levels of transforming growth factor β1 with disease severity in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

Aim: Transforming growth factor (TGF) is overexpressed by tumor cells like other proteins and growth factors. TGF-β1 is then activated in the extracellular compartment but is unable to control cell proliferation because of the absence or low level of TGF-β1 receptors on the plasma membrane of malignant hepatocytes. This potential mechanism might interrupt the autocrine regulation loop of TGF-β1 and its blocking effect on cell proliferation. TGF-β1 is a multifunctional cytokine involved in the regulation of growth and differentiation of both normal and transformed cells. This study aimed to evaluate the association of serum levels of TGF-β1 with disease severity. Methods: A total of 180 subjects were classified into 6 groups according to Barcelona clinic liver cancer (BCLC) classification, 30 patients each:early (BCLC 0 and A), intermediate (BCLC B), advanced stage (BCLC C), and terminal stage (BCLC D) of hepatocellular carcinoma as well as 1 group of patients with cirrhosis only and 1 control group. Serum levels of TGFβ1 were measured. Results: Serum levels of TGF-β1 were significantly higher in patients with HCC (1,687.47 ± 1,462.81 pg/mL) than cirrhotics (487.98 ± 344.23 pg/mL, P < 0.001) and controls (250.16 ± 284.61 pg/mL, P <0.001). Conclusion: TGF-β1 may have a role in tumor growth and progression.
