Ischemia-reperfusion injury(IRI)remains an unresolved and complicated situation in clinical practice,especially in the case of organ *** factors contribute to its complexity;the depletion of energy during ischemia and the induction of oxidative stress during reperfusion initiate a cascade of pathways that lead to cell death and finally to severe organ ***,the sirtuin family of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-dependent deacetylases has gained increasing attention from researchers,due to their involvement in the modulation of a wide variety of cellular *** are seven mammalian sirtuins and,among them,the nuclear/cytoplasmic sirtuin 1(SIRT1)and the mitochondrial sirtuin 3(SIRT3)are ubiquitously expressed in many tissue *** are known to play major roles in protecting against cellular stress and in controlling metabolic pathways,which are key processes during *** this review,we mainly focus on SIRT1 and SIRT3 and examine their role in modulating pathways against energy depletion during ischemia and their involvement in oxidative stress,apoptosis,microcirculatory stress and inflammation during *** present evidence of the beneficial effects of sirtuins against IRI and emphasize the importance of developing new strategies by enhancing their action.

Genetic and morphological divergence in the purple sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus(Echinodermata,Echinoidea)across the African Mediterranean coast

The present investigation focuses on population structure analysis of the purple sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus across the African Mediterranean coast, with the main aim of assessing the influence of the Siculo-Tunisian Strait on gene flow disruption in this highly dispersive echinoid species. For this purpose, patterns of morphological and genetic variation were assessed among its populations from the western and eastern Mediterranean coasts. A total of 302 specimens from seven Tunisian sites were collected and examined for morphometric variability at twelve morphometric traits. Concordant results, inferred from CDA（canonical discriminant analyses）, pairwise NPMANOVA（non parametric multivariate analysis of variance） comparisons and MDS（multidimensional scaling） plot, unveiled significant inter-population differences in the measured traits among the studied populations. Furthermore, the combined use of the one way ANOSIM（analysis of similarities） and the Discriminant/Hotelling analysis allowed unravelling two morphologically differentiated groups assigned to both western and eastern Mediterranean basins. The SIMPER（similarity percentages） routine analysis showed that total dry weight, test diameter and spine length were major contributors to the morphometric separation between locations and between groups. Pattern of phenotypic divergence discerned in P. lividus across the Siculo-Tunisian Strait is interestingly in congruence with that inferred from the genetic investigation of the purple sea urchin populations from the same region based on the analysis of the mt DNA COI（cytochrome oxidase I） gene in 314 specimens from nineteen locations covering a wider geographic transect, streching westward to the Algerian coast and eastward to the Libyan littoral. In field control of Botrytis cinerea by synergistic action of a fungicide and organic sanitizer

A new Integrated Pest Management program based on the combination of synthetic pesticide with a GRAS （generally recognized as safe）-classified sanitizer for the control of Botrytis cinerea in field conditions was described. The aim behind this research was to determine whether the use of this mixture would enhance the efficiency of pesticides while decreasing the recommended dose. Naturally infected tomato plants, grown in the greenhouse, were treated with two commonly used fungicides SWITCH （Syngenta, Switzerland） and SIGNUM （BASF, Germany） each alone or combined with a commercially available organic sanitizer PERACLEAN？5 （Evonik Industries, Germany）. A total of 27 treatments were tested consisting of three concentrations of synthetic fungicide （×1, ×1/2 and ×1/4 of the recommended dose） either applied separately or combined with three concentrations of the tested sanitizer （0.5, 1 and 1.5％）. The control efficacy achieved by the fungicides applied alone ranged between 0 and 66.7％ while all fungicide-sanitizer mixtures resulted in up to 70％ control of grey mould. The treatment that provides the maximum control of B. cinerea was the result mixture of ×1/4 of the recommended concentration of SWITCH （15 g L-1） with 0.5％ of PERACLEAN？5. This combination suppressed 85％ of grey mold infections while decreasing the usually used amount of this pesticide by 75％, reducing therefore the well known negative impacts of chemical pesticides on environment and consumers health.

Dental pulp stem cells stimulate neuronal differentiation of PC12 cells

Dental pulp stem cells(DPSCs) secrete neurotrophic factors which may play an important therapeutic role in neural development, maintenance and repair. To test this hypothesis, DPSCs-conditioned medium(DPSCs-CM) was collected from 72 hours serum-free DPSCs cultures. The impact of DPSCs-derived factors on PC12 survival, growth, migration and differentiation was investigated. PC12 cells were treated with nerve growth factor(NGF), DPSCs-CM or co-cultured with DPSCs using Transwell inserts for 8 days. The number of surviving cells with neurite outgrowths and the length of neurites were measured by image analysis. Immunocytochemical staining was used to evaluate the expression of neuronal markers NeuN, microtubule associated protein 2(MAP-2) and cytoskeletal marker βIII-tubulin. Gene expression levels of axonal growth-associated protein 43 and synaptic protein Synapsin-I, NeuN, MAP-2 and βIII-tubulin were analysed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction(qRT-PCR). DPSCs-CM was analysed for the neurotrophic factors(NGF, brain-derived neurotrophic factor [BDNF], neurotrophin-3, and glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor [GDNF]) by specific ELISAs. Specific neutralizing antibodies against the detected neurotrophic factors were used to study their exact role on PC12 neuronal survival and neurite outgrowth extension. DPSCs-CM significantly promoted cell survival and induced the neurite outgrowth confirmed by NeuN, MAP-2 and βIII-tubulin immunostaining. Furthermore, DPSCsCM was significantly more effective in stimulating PC12 neurite outgrowths than live DPSCs/PC12 co-cultures over the time studied. The morphology of induced PC12 cells in DPSCs-CM was similar to NGF positive controls;however, DPSCs-CM stimulation of cell survival was significantly higher than what was seen in NGF-treated cultures. The feasibility of a sustainable non-autoclaved cellular concrete,based on flax vegetable co-products,for the production of usable specimen in the lightweight construction field,has been investigated *** produced specimen,containing various volume ratios of flax particles with respect to preformulatd Tradical PF70 lime binder of 0,1,and 2,were lightened by creating a porous structure in the matrix through the addition of 0.3%*** powder(able to react with calcium hydroxide from the binder and result in microscopic air-bubbles).Fresh and hardened specimen properties,including hydration,fresh density,porosity,hardened density,compressive and flexural strengths,toughness energy,and dry thermal conductivity at different temperatures,were assessed for varying flax-to-binder *** have shown that the addition of Aluminum powder leads to restrain the setting time delay of binder-based ***,the hardened material displays a significant decrease in specimen density,thereby resulting in a compressive strength level compatible with that required in the cellular construction materials *** also highlighted the ability of added flax to induce a change in the specimen from brittle to ductile ***,a high degree of thermal insulation can be achieved,which makes the cellular specimen based on flax particle suitable as insulated-bearing walls material.

There is a considerable interest in producing and understanding the optical and spectroscopic properties of ordered nanoparticle assemblies. Herein, we describe and interpret the optical absorbance and Raman properties of 5.9 nm ± 0.3 nm diameter silver nanocrystals coated with dodecanethiol and organized in highly ordered 3D superlattices of different heights. Each superlattice was studied individually, which allowed to elaborate a model based on Maxwell-Garnett theory to reproduce qualitatively the height and wavelength dependence of the absorbance. Importantly, because of their small size compared to that of traditional nanoparticles used in Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy （SERS）, the large 3D distribution of hot spots generated by the silver superlattices allowed to easily obtain SERS spectra of the surrounding ligands despite their intrinsic low Raman cross section. Accordingly, traces of thiophenol could be detected very easily.

The present investigation focuses on population genetic structure analysis of the endangered giant clam species Tridacna maxima across part of the Red Sea,with the main aim of assessing the influence of postulated potential barriers to gene flow(i.e.,particular oceanographic features and marked environmental heterogeneity)on genetic connectivity among populations of this poorly dispersive bivalve *** this purpose,a total of 44 specimens of *** were collected from five sampling locations along the Saudi Arabian coast and examined for genetic variability at the considerably variable mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase I(COI).Our results revealed lack of population subdivision and phylogeographic structure across the surveyed geographic spectrum,suggesting that neither the short pelagic larval dispersal nor the various postulated barriers to gene flow in the Red Sea can trigger the onset of marked genetic differentiation in ***,the discerned shallow COI haplotype genealogy(exhibiting high haplotype diversity and low nucleotide diversity),associated with recent demographic and spatial expansion events,can be considered as residual effect of a recent evolutionary history of the species in the Red Sea.

AIM:To analyze cases of obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct which creates a fertile environment for secondary bacterial Infection and can result in dacryocystitis,which is a constant threat to cornea and orbital soft tissue and a potential source of endophthalmitis following intraocular *** majority of obstructions of the lacrimal excretory outflow system are acquired ones occurring in adulthood and involving the distal parts of the *** obstruction may be primary/idiopathic or secondary to a wide variety of infectious,inflammatory,traumatic,mechanical,toxic or neoplastic causes mimicking idiopathic *** cases are treated by dacryocystorhinostomy(DCR).METHODS:The present study was conducted to determine the histopathologic,immunohistochemical and current microbiologic characteristics of lacrimal sac specimens in patients undergoing external ***:Non-specific lacrimal sac pathology was present in all 33 cases and 81.8%of the cases showed moderate chronic inflammation with a chronic inflammatory score(CIS)ranging between 4 and 6,whereas 12.12%showed severe inflammatory changes with a CIS of *** degree of inflammation was seen in6.06%with a CIS of *** total prevalence of grampositive,gram-negative,and culture-negative samples were 59.4%,37.5%,and 3%***:Non-specific chronic inflammation withfibrosis is indeed the most commonly reported histopathological finding in lacrimal sac wall biopsy specimens.

Aim： To investigate the effects of crude garlic on adult male rat reproductive functions. Methods： Thirty male rats were divided into five groups： group 1 （untreated） and groups 2, 3, 4 and 5 were fed for 30 days with 5%, 10%, 15% and 30% crude garlic, respectively. Testes and accessory organs were weighed and some markers were assessed. Light and electron microscopy observations were also performed. Results： A significant decrease was observed in the body weight of groups 4 （14%; P 〈 0.01） and 5 （20%; P 〈 0.01）; of the prostate weight in group 5 （29.1%; P 〈 0.05） and of seminal vesicle weight in groups 3 （14.4%; P 〈 0.01）, 4 （18.3%; P 〈 0.01） and 5 （27.3%; P 〈 0.01）. In contrast, testis and epididymis weights were unchanged. In epididymis tissue, the alpha glucosidase activity and the spermatozoa density were unchanged. The treatment resulted in a significant decrease in testosterone serum levels in groups 3 （77.3%; P 〈 0.01）, 4 （77.3%; P 〈 0.01） and 5 （90.9%; P 〈 0.01）, associated with a significant increase in LH serum levels （P 〈 0.01）. Testicular histology showed a dose-dependent increase in the percentage of empty seminiferous tubules. Moreover, testicular function was affected; a significant decrease in phosphatase acid activity （P 〈 0.01） and testosterone （P 〈 0.05） contents were observed. Conclusion： Crude garlic consumption during 1 month reduced testosterone secretion and altered spermatogenesis at 10%, 15% and 30% doses.

Medications in type-2 diabetics and their association with liver fibrosis

BACKGROUND The prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) is significantly rising worldwide. Type-2 diabetes(T2D) is a major risk factor for NAFLD *** To assess the association of commonly used medications to advanced fibrosis(AF) in patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD and *** We used the International Classification of Disease 9 th Revision Clinical Modification coding system to identify patients with T2D and included patients who underwent liver biopsy for suspected NAFLD between January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2015. We compared demographics, clinical characteristics, and differences in pattern of medication use in patients who had biopsy-proven AF to those without it. A univariate and multivariate analysis was performed to assess the association of different classes of medication with the presence of *** A total of 1183 patients were included in the final analysis, out of which 32%(n =381) had AF on liver biopsy. Mean age of entire cohort was 52 years and majority were females(65%) and Caucasians(85%). Among patients with AF, 51% were on oral hypoglycemics, 30% were on insulin, 66% were on antihypertensives and 27% were on lipid lowering agents for the median duration of 19 mo, 10 mo, 26 mo, and 24 mo respectively. Medications associated with decreased risk of AF included metformin, liraglutide, lisinopril, hydrochlorothiazide, atorvastatin and simvastatin while the use of furosemide and spironolactone were associated with higher prevalence of *** In our cohort of T2D with biopsy proven NAFLD, the patients who were receiving metformin, liraglutide, lisinopril, hydrochlorothiazide, atorvastatin and simvastatin were less likely to have AF on biopsy, while patients who were receiving furosemide and spironolactone had a higher likelihood of having AF when they underwent liver biopsy. Future studies are needed to confirm these findings and to establish measures for prevention of NAFLD progression in patients with T2D.
