Radar Rainfall Estimation of a Severe Thunderstorm over Jeddah

The regular occurrence of flash floods over the region of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in the past decade has highlighted the serious need for the development of early warning systems. Radar stations have been installed in Jeddah in the last decade whose active radius covers the Middle Western area of the country. Therefore, radar information and the associated the rainfall estimates are potentially useful components of an effective early warning system. Weather radar can potentially provide high-resolution spatial and temporal rainfall estimates that bring more accuracy to flood warnings as well as having applications in areas with insufficient rainfall stations coverage. Weather radar does not measure rainfall depth directly. An empirical relationship between reflectivity (Z) and rainfall rate (R), called the Z-R relationship (Z = ARb), is generally used to assess the rainfall depth. In this study, the rainfall events during August-September 2007 were analyzed to develop a Z-R relationship using the Spatial Probability Technique (SPT). This technique is based on a basic GIS function and the probability matching method. Using this technique, the Z-R pairs can be analyzed for both linear and empirical power relationships. It is found that the empirical power function is more appropriate to describe Z-R relationship than a linear function for the studied area. The method is applied with some success to the flooding event of November 25, 2009. However, the investigation of the Z-R relationship is only one step in the development of a warning system;further study of other parameters relevant to rainfall and flash flood occurrence is needed.

An Efficient Method to Solve Thermal Wave Equation

In this paper, an efficient technique of differential quadrature method and perturbation method is employed to analyze reaction-diffusion problems. An efficient method is presented to solve thermal wave propagation model in one and two dimensions. The proposed method marches in the time direction block by block and there are several time levels in each block. The global method of differential quadrature is applied in each block to discretize both the spatial and temporal derivatives. Furthermore, the proposed method is validated by comparing the obtained results with the available analytical ones and also compared with the hybrid technique of differential quadrature method and Runge-Kutta fourth order method.

3D printing is the future. It will change the way in which we produce new materials—maybe much less in factories and much easier in shops. However, biobased materials have been difficult to 3D print. Most 3D printers use heat to melt the plastic or metal to be printed, and biobased materials are degraded. But cellulose nanofibrils have a solution to this problem: the printing paste is wet and dries out to a solid material. In this work, it was showed recent wound healing in Vinous Ulcer with kidney and other health complications using bacterial cellulose 3D print membranes.

Numerical Study of Slip Effect of Unsteady MHD Pulsatile Flow through Porous Medium in an Artery Using Generalized Differential Quadrature Method (Comparative Study)

The unsteady pulsatile flow of blood through porous medium in an artery has been studied under the influence of periodic body acceleration and slip condition by considering blood as incompressible Newtonian electrically conducting fluid in the presence of magnetic field. In this paper, a new technique of differential quadrature method is introduced to find numerical solution of non-linear partial differential equations such as the equation of motion of this problem “Navier-Stokes equation”. The presence of the nonlinearity in the problem leads to severe difficulties in the solution approximation. In construction of the numerical scheme “a new algorithm” a generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) is to use for derivatives with respect to space variables of differential equations and for the time derivative applying fourth order RungeKutta Method (RKM). The GDQM changed the nonlinear partial differential equations into a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The obtained system of ODEs is solved by 4th order RKM. This combination of DQM and 4th order RKM gives a very good numerical technique for solving time dependent problems. The algorithm is coded in Matlab 7.***.0.739 and the simulations are run on a Pentium 4 CPU 900 MHz with 1 GB memory capacity. The effects of slip condition, magnetic field, porous medium, and body acceleration have been discussed. The numerical results show that the proposed method is more accurate and convergent than other numerical methods in literature. The method is illustrated and compared with the exact and analytical solutions and it is found that the proposed method gives a better accuracy and is quite easy to implement.

Ultrasound Role in Diagnosis of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and Postoperative Evaluation in Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) represents about 90% of all entrapment neuropathies and is caused by entrapment of the median nerve while passing in the carpal tunnel. US has revealed equal effectiveness as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in diagnosis of CTS;however further attention should be given in case of equivocal results from nerve conduction studies (NCS) and/or before endoscopic surgical intervention. This study was conducted to evaluate the role of US in diagnosis and treatment of CTS which was done by endoscopic release. This is a prospective study including patients having CTS who were treated by endoscopic release between December 2017 and December 2018. All cases were evaluated by electrophysiological studies and US at the preoperative period. US was used to measure the cross sectional area (CSA) of the median nerve. Patients underwent endoscopic carpal tunnel release and were called for follow up after 1, 3, and 6 months for clinical and US assessment of the median nerve. Forty cases were included with mean age of 27.85 years. Numbness was the predominant symptom (92.5%) followed by wrist pain (85%). The mean diameter of median nerve showed a significant decrease at different time points (P electrophysiological study. The sensitivity of US in detecting the improvement of CTS as compared to clinical examination increased from 28% at 1 month postoperative, 53.4% at 3 months to 92.1% at 6 months. Ultrasonography is a sensitive non-invasive diagnostic tool in diagnosis of CTS preoperative and diagnosis of improvement of the patients postoperatively especially at 6 months.

The Differential Quadrature Solution of Reaction-Diffusion Equation Using Explicit and Implicit Numerical Schemes

In this paper, two different numerical schemes, na.ely the Runge-Kutta fourth order method and the implicit Euler method with perturbation method of the second degree, are applied to solve the nonlinear thermal wave in one and two dimensions using the differential quadrature method. The aim of this paper is to make comparison between previous numerical schemes and detect which is more efficient and more accurate by comparing the obtained results with the available analytical ones and computing the computational time.

Phosphate Solubilization by <i>Bacillus subtilis</i>and <i>Serratia marcescens</i>Isolated from Tomato Plant Rhizosphere

Plants need phosphorus for many physiological activities in a form of phosphate anions. Three different bacterial strains (Bacillus subtilis PH, Serratia marcescens PH1, and Serratia marcescens PH2), recently isolated from tomato plant rhizosphere, have high phosphate solubilization index (SI from 2.8 to 3.2) on Pikovskaya agar medium (which contains calcium phosphate). Moreover, phosphate release from calcium in Pikovskaya broth over 5 days is increasing with cell growth for the different isolates. The most efficient phosphate solubilization case is the mixed culture of the 3 strains (OD475 is almost 1). On the other hand, pH values decreased dramatically with time due to organic acids secretion and the maximum acidification level is recoded for Serratia marcescens PH2 (pH = 1.94). Interestingly, the isolates are resistance to important pesticides (oxamyl, thiophanate methyl, and captan) that are commonly used in the sampling area. This resistance is very favorable and increases the persistence of the phosphate solubilizing bacteria in contaminated soils. The isolates are therefore plant symbionts and growth promoting agents.

The Choice of Appropriate Scenario in Order to Reduce the Effect of Thermal Pollution at the Damietta Branch Caused by Cooling Water Discharged from Kafr-Al-Batek Power Station

The main purpose of this research effort was to investigate and reduce the volume of thermal polluted cooling water from returning to the Kafr-Al-Batek power station. Traditional cooling systems, such as cooling towers or ponds can be very challenging with regards to implementation in developing countries;mainly due to the lack of financial capacity. This research focused on low-cost simulation solutions that could improve thermal outcomes. Comparisons were performed between three different scenarios to decrease the elevated temperature of the discharged water (43 °C) released by the Kafr-Al-Batek power station on the Damietta branch. The different scenarios were simulated by using Star CCM+ software. The base scenario examined the discharge angle of an existing outlet. The second scenario examined a new outlet downstream from the existing outlet. The third scenario increased the width of the existing outlet in order to reduce flow velocity. A comparative analysis is provided between the aforementioned solutions to identify the most suitable and cost-effective alternative. Simulation results show that changing the discharge angle from 90° to 135° is the most effective solution. Applying this solution has the potential to decrease the water temperature at the inlet by 7 degrees Celsius (from 32 °C to 25 °C).

Predicting of Land Surface Temperature Distribution in Freetown City, Sierra Leone by Using Polynomial Curve Fitting Model

Global warming has attracted much concern about the worldwide organization, civil society groups, researchers, and so forth because the worldwide surface temperature has been expanding. This investigation intends to assess and compare the ability of a combination of land cover indices to predict the future distribution of land surface temperatures in Freetown using the Polynomial model analysis. Landsat sa.ellite images of 1988, 1998, 2000, 2010, and 2018 of the Freetown Metropolitan zone were utilized for analysis. The investigation had adopted two land covers indices, Modification of normalized difference water index and Urban Index (UI) (e.g., MNDWI and UI) and applied a multi regression equation for forecasting the future LST. The stimulation results propose that the development will be accompanied by surface temperature increases, especially in Freetown’s western urban area. The temperature prevailing in the west of the metropolitan area may increase in the city somewhere in the range from 1988 to 2018. Additionally, the results of the LST prediction show that the model is perfect. Our discoveries can be represented as a helpful device for policymakers and community awareness by giving a scientific basis for sustainable urban planning and management.
