Study of Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) Gene Polymorphisms among Egyptian Cohort Patients with Different Stages of Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer represents the third cancer worldwide. Studies showed thatinsufficient levels of vitamin D may result in colorectal cancer. Genetic variations in genes controlling vitamin D activity would play a role in determining susceptibility to colorectal cancer. Aim of the work: to study the different genotypes of VDR polymorphisms and detect the association between serum levels of 25(OH)VitD and 1,25(OH)2VitD among sample of Egyptian patients with different stages of colorectal cancer. Methods: Ninety patients (60 with different stages of colorectal cancer and 30 patients with benign pathology of the colon) together with 30 healthy controls were examined using PCR-RFLP analysis for FokI, ApaI and TaqI polymorphisms. Results: Genotype distribution for ApaI polymorphism showed no statistically significant difference between patients (colorectal cancer and benign) and controls with p = 0.1. There was no statistically significant difference in FokI polymorphism where p = 0.26 and genotype distribution for TaqI was also insignificant with p = 0.016. The median serum level of 25(OH)VitD was low in cancer cases compared to the control group and benign cases with (p 0.001). There was no statisticallysignificant difference of median serum level of 1,25(OH)2VitD between benign and cancer cases. There was statistically significant difference of median serum level of 25(OH)VitD and 1,25(OH)2VitD between stage I and stage II with (p = 0.004) and (p 0.001), and between stage I and stage III with (p = 0.001)and (p 0.001), but no statistically significant difference between stage II and III with (p = 0.514). Conclusions: There is ethnic variability in vitamin D receptor gene polymorphisms. The lack of significant association of the studied gene polymorphism in our population suggests that its association with other functionally known gene polymorphism might have a role in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer.

Surface Photometry and Dynamical Properties of Lenticular Galaxies: NGC3245 as Case Study

In this paper, surface photometry and dynamical properties of Lenticular galaxies will be developed and applied to NGC3245. In this respect, we established new relation between the intensity distribution I and the semi-major axis a Moreover, some basic statistics of both independent and the dependent variables of the relation are also given. In addition to the I(a) relation , the Sérsic r1/n model is applied for the intensity profile I(r) resulting in an estimation of the effective radius, re, and the surface brightness it encloses, μe. Both relations (I(a) and I(r)) are accurate as judged by the precision criteria which are: the probable errors for the coefficients , the estimated variance of the fit and the Q value (the square distance between the exact solution and the least square estimated solution) where all very satisfactory. Correlation coefficients between some parameters of the isophotes are also computed. Finally as examples of applications of surface photometry we determined the dynamical properties: mass, density, potential distributions, as well as distributions of escape and circular speeds in terms of Sérsic model.

Contrast Induced Nephropathy after Radial or Femoral Access for Invasive Management of Acute Coronary Syndrome

Background: Percutaneous coronary intervention is now the best way of management of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Contrast induced nephropathy is a serious complication and greatly dependent on several factors. It is still unclear whether the vascular access migrates CIN risk. Objective: To study the impact of Radial Access (RA) compared with Femoral Access (FA) on developing contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) in patients undergoing invasive management of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Methods: Sixty patients eligible for invasive management of ACS at cardiology department (Menoufia University hospital and National Heart Institute) were randomized into two groups. Group I: included 30 patients with femoral approach and Group II: included 30 patients with radial approach. The occurrence of CIN estimated by KDIGO definition (absolute increase in serum creatinine (SCr) by ≥0.5 mg/dl within 48 hours;or increase in SCr to ≥25% of ba.eline) was estimated in both groups. Results: Only 9 patients (15%) developed CIN, 5 patients (55.6%) of them underwent PCI through FA without statistically significant difference between the two ***: CIN is considered a potential complication of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Our study did not show the preference of using an approach over the other.

Influence of Tillage Practices on Soil Physical Properties and Growth and Yield of Maize in Jabal al Akhdar, Libya

Different tillage practices are used for maize cropping in Libya. Yet, the effects of these practices on soil physical properties and maize growth and yield are not known. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different tillage practices on soil physical properties and maize growth and yield in Libya. A field experiment was conducted in 2009 and repeated in 2010 using three tillage practices (conventional tillage (CT), ridge tillage (RT) and zero tillage (ZT)). Data about soil physical properties (penetration resistance (PR), bulk density (BD), total porosity (TP) and saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks)) across soil depths, maize growth components (plant height, number of leaves, leaf area index and dry root weight) at 60, 75 and 125 days after planting, and maize yield (grain and stover) at harvest were collected and statistically analyzed in both years. To evaluate the effects of the tillage practices economically, the tillage operation cost and production cost were calculated. The results showed that at the surface layer (0 - 20 cm), CT had lower PR and lower BD, but higher TP and Ks compared to RT and ZT. At 20 - 40 cm and 40 - 60 cm depths, the lower PR and PD and higher TP and Ks were under ZT and RT compared to CT. All maize growth parameters at different times were highest for CT followed by RT and lowest for ZT. The CT practice presented the highest grain and stover yield followed by RT and ZT. However, harvest index was higher where ZT was applied. While tillage operation costs were the highest for CT followed by RT and ZT, the production costs were the highest for ZT followed by RT and CT. In general, the CT practice produced higher maize growth and yield, lower production cost, and higher tillage operation cost than those are planted using RT and ZT practices.

Toxicity and feeding response of adult corn earworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to an organic spinosad formulation in sucrose solution

Adult corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie), feeds on plant exudates soon after emergence from pupa in their natural habitat, and thereafter disperses to suitable host plants for reproduction. The intent of this study was to determine if EntrustTM, an organic formulation of spinosad, could be used in a behavioral-based pest management strategy to control H. zea in organic farming systems. In the laboratory, we evaluated the response of the corn earworm to Entrust mixed with sugar solution relative to ingestion, toxicity and proboscis extension. The sucrose solution served as a feeding stimulant and simulated the plant exudate. Lethal concentration of Entrust (LC50 with 95% CLs) for male corn earworm captured in pheromone-baited traps was 0.48 (0.43 - 0.53) mgL-1 for 24 h response. Mean lethal time was 2.56 ± 0.13 h with ingestion of Entrust at 50 mg·L-1. A lethal dose of Entrust at 1000 mg·L-1 inhibited neither ingestion nor proboscis extension response of the insect. A detailed study of the adult corn earworm in the laboratory relative to toxicity after ingestion of Entrust indicates that the pesticide has potential to control the insect when used in an insecticidal bait formulation as part of an attract-and- kill system. Field studies are needed to support the conclusion.

Objective: We planned this study to investigate the relation between serum adiponectin level and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC): risk, features and prognosis. Methods: The study included 100 patients with HCC and 40 healthy control subjects. Adiponectin levels were determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. Results: In the subset of patients with compensated cirrhosis, the mean serum adiponectin level was significantly lower in HCC cases compared to healthy controls (88.6 versus 115 ng/mL; P = 0.012). In addition, serum adiponectin levels correlated negatively with tumor size (P = 0.004) and were significantly lower in patients with vascular invasion and distant metastases (P = 0.03 and P = 0.02 respectively). Furthermore, the median overall survival was significantly higher in the high adiponectin group than the low adiponectin group (median 12.5 versus 9.5 months; log rank = 4.6, P = 0.03). Conclusion: Decreased circulating adiponectin level may play a role in the development of HCC and is a potential poor prognostic marker. These data should be validated in further prospective studies. Also the mechanisms by which adiponectin affect the course of HCC need to be clarified.

Dosimetric Comparison of Amorphous Silicon EPID and 2D Array Detector for Pre-Treatment Verification of Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy

Purpose: To study the dosimetric characteristics of amorphous silicon electronic Portal Imaging Device EPID and 2D array detector for dose verification of radiotherapy treatment plans, and the quality assurance QA testing of IMRT was investigated. Materials and methods: All measurements were done with Varian IX linear accelerator, aSi-1000 EPID and 2D array detector. The dose linearity, reproducibility, output factors, dose rate, SDD and response with slap phantom thickness have been measured and compared against those measured by ion chamber. Results: The characteristics of EPID and 2D array: the response of EPID agreed with 2D array and ion chamber 0.6cc. EPID and 2D array showed short-term output reproducibility with SD = 0.1%. The dose rates of 2D array SD = ±0.7%, EPID = ±0.4% compared with a 0.6 cc SD = ±0.5%. Output factor measurements for the central chamber of the EPID and 2D array showed no considerable deviation from ion chamber measurements. Measurement of beam profiles with the EPID and 2D array matched very well with the ion chamber measurements in the water phantom. The EPID is more sensitive to lower energy photons by increasing solid water phantom thickness. The mean and standard deviation passing rates (γ%≤1) for film, 2D array and EPID for 30 IMRT fields of five patients were 95.93 ± 0.96%, 99.05 ± 0.24%, and 99.37 ± 0.12%, respectively. Conclusion: The study shows that EPID and 2D array are a reliable and accurate dosimeter and a useful tool for quality assurance. We found that the EPID was more accurate compared with both 2D array and ion chamber. The gamma criterion of 3%/3 mm is the most suitable criteria for IMRT plans of QA.

＜正＞ In this information era, new facts have been discovered in an ancient document after digitizing it. Although these facts are much more related to the steganography and authentication, but they are not classified in this field. This paper will try to formulate some of the astonishing facts and introduce the steganalysis of this document to the steganography community. We’ll see that the facts are really surprising, and touch at the heart of steganography, information security and authentication. The real art of information hiding has been used in the document, which is fourteen hundred years old. The document has been structured in a very unique way, and its text has been worded following a marvelous mathematical pattern that helps us to verify the integrity and the authenticity of the document. We’ll see also that the document has used a novel （in fact is the oldest） variations of checksums and public keys.

Square-Wave Adsorptive Cathodic Stripping Voltammeteric Determination of Manganese (II) Using a Carbon Paste electrode Modified with Montmorillonite Clay

Manganese is an essential micronutrient for all organisms;however at high concentrations it has a toxic effect. Manganese toxicity is a serious constraint to crop cultivation since it is taken-up by plants and can easily be passed into the food chain again causing symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. A fully validated square-wave adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry method has been developed for determination of Mn (II) as a complex with 2-(5’-bromo-2’-pyridylazo) 5-diethylaminophenol in aqueous solutions using a carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with montmorillonite-Na clay. The results showed that the modified CPE (90% (w/w) graphite powder and 10% (w/w) montmorillonite-Na clay) exhibited excellent electrochemical activity towards the investigated Mn (II) complex in acetate buffer of pH = 5.0. Factors affecting the performance of the modified carbon paste electrode and the sensitivity of the described square- wave stripping voltammetry method, including the electrode composition, concentration of ligand, pulse parameters and preconcentration conditions were examined. A detection limit (S/N = 3) of 0.015μg·L-1 (2.73 × 10-10 mol·L-1) Mn (II) was achieved when a preconcentration time of 240 s was applied. Insignificant interferences from various inorganic and organic species were estimated. The described square-wave adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry method coupled with the modified carbon paste electrode has been successfully applied to Mn (II) analysis in different water samples.

Spectroscopy and Optical Properties of Sm<sup>3+</sup>:YAG Nanocrystalline Powder Prepared by Co-Precipitation Method: Effect of Sm<sup>3+</sup>Ions Concentrations

Samarium doped Yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) nanopowders with different concentration (0.5%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 5% and 8% mol) were prepared by simple and low cost co-precipitation method. We found that the precursor begins converting to pure YAG at relatively low temperature around 900°C, and no intermediate phases were detected. The powders annealed at 900°C and 1000°C in air with average particle size around ≈30 nm were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. The photoluminescent measurements showed that the reddish-orange (RO) emission transition 4G5/2:6H7/2 is more prominent. In addition, the optimum concentration of doped Sm ions that lead to maximum intensity was reported. Also, fluorescence efficiencies as pumping power dependence for different Sm3+ ions concentrations were explored.
