Retrobulbar administration of purified anti-nerve growth factor in developing rats induces structural and biochemical changes in the retina and cornea

AIm:To develop an experimental model of endogenous nerve growth factor(NGF)deprivation by retrobulbar administration of purified neutralizing anti-NGF antibodies in young Sprague-dawley rats and provide further information on NGF expression in the retina and ***:Sixty old pathogen-free Sprague dawley rats(p14,post-natal days)were treated with repeated retrobulbar injections of neutralizing anti-NGF(2μL,100μg/m L,every 3 d).After 2 wk(p28),retinal and corneal tissues were investigated for morphological,biochemical,and molecular expression of trkANGFR by using Western blotting or *** as well as protein profile expression were also ***:Chronic retrobulbar neutralizing anti-NGF antibodies changed the distribution of trkANGFR immunoreactivity at retinal level,while no changes were detected for global trkANGFR protein *** contrary,the treatment resulted in the increase of corneal trkANGFR *** tissues showed a decreased rhodopsin expression as well as reduced number of both rhodopsin expressing and total retinal cells,as observed after single cell extraction.A decreased expression of ICAm-1,IL-17 and IL-13 as well as an increased expression of IL-21 typified retinal *** significant changes were observed for corneal ***:The reduced availability of endogenous NGF,as produced by chronic retrobulbar anti-NGF administration,produce a quick response from retinal tissues,with respect to corneal ones,suggesting the presence of early compensatory mechanisms to protect retinal networking.

Sonochemical synthesis of nanostructured nickel hydroxide as an electrode material for improved electrochemical energy storage application

A facile and fast approach for the synthesis of a nanostructured nickel hydroxide(Ni（OH）;) via sonochemical technique is reported in the present study. The X-ray diffraction results confirmed that the synthesized Ni（OH）;was oriented in β-phase of hexagonal brucite structure. The nanostructured Ni（OH）;electrode exhibited the maximum specific capacitance of 1256 F/g at a current density of 200 mA/g in 1 m KOH;. Ni（OH）;electrodes exhibited the pseudocapacitive behavior due to the presence of redox reaction. It also exhibited long-term cyclic stability of 85% after 2000 cycles, suggesting that the nanostructured Ni（OH）;electrode will play a promising role for high performance supercapacitor application.

Air pollution has become an important issue,especially in Caribbean urban areas,and,particulate matter(Pm)emitted by different natural and anthropogenic sources causes environmental and health *** this work,we studied the concentrations of Pm_(10) and Pm_(2.5) sources in an industrial and port urban area in the Caribbean region of *** samples were collected within 48-h periods between April and October 2018 by using a Partisol 2000 i-d *** geochemical characterization was performed by X-ray fluorescence(XRF)***,ionic species and black carbon(BC)were quantified by ion chromatography and reflectance spectroscopy,*** the Positive matrix Factorization(PmF)receptor model,the contributions of Pm sources were *** average concentration of Pm_(10) was 46.6±16.2μg/m^(3),with high concentrations of Cl and *** Pm_(2.5),the average concentration was 12.0±3.2μg/m^(3),and the most abundant components were BC,S,and *** receptor model identified five sources for Pm_(10) and Pm_(2.5).For both fractions,the contributions of marine sea spray,re-suspended soil,and vehicular traffic were *** addition,Pm_(2.5) included two mixed sources were found to be fuel oil combustion with fertilizer industry emissions,and secondary aerosol sources with building construction ***,Pm_(10) was found to also include building construction emissions with re-suspended soil,and metallurgical industry *** obtained geochemical atmospheric results are important for the implementation of strategies for the continuous improvement of the air quality of the Caribbean region.

Background Asymptomatic carriers of leucine-rich repeat kinase 2(LRRK2)gene mutations constitute an ideal population for discovering prodromal biomarkers of Parkinson’s disease(Pd).In this study,we aim to identify CSF candidate risk biomarkers of Pd in individuals with LRRK2 mutation *** We measured the levels of CSF total-(t-),oligomeric(o-)and phosphorylated S129(pS129-)α-syn,total-tau(tTau),phosphorylated threonine 181 tau(pTau),amyloid-beta 40(Aβ-40),amyloid-beta-42(Aβ-42)and 40 inflammatory chemokines in symptomatic(n=23)and asymptomatic(n=51)LRRK2 mutation carriers,subjects with a clinical diagnosis of Pd(n=60)and age-matched healthy controls(n=34).General linear models corrected for age and gender were performed to assess differences in CSF biomarkers between the *** that varied significantly between the groups were then analyzed using backward-elimination logistic regression analysis to identify an ideal biomarkers panel of prodromal *** discriminant function analysis revealed low levels of CSF t-α-syn,high levels of CSF o-α-syn and TNF-αbest discriminated asymptomatic LRRK2 mutation carriers from both symptomatic Pd and healthy *** the discriminative power using receiver operating curve analysis,an area under the curve>0.80 was *** The current study suggests that CSF t-,o-α-syn and TNF-αare candidate risk biomarkers for the detection of Pd at the prodromal *** findings also highlight the dynamic interrelationships between CSF proteins and the importance of using a biomarkers’panel approach for an accurate and timely diagnosis of Pd.

A dosimetric comparative study between conformal and intensity modulated radiation therapy in the treatment of primary nasopharyngeal carcinomas: the Egyptian experience

Objective: The study is a comparative study, the aim of which is to compare 3d conformal radiation therapy (3d-CRT) and intensity modulated radiation therapy (ImRT) in treating nasopharyngeal carcinomas; dosimetrically evaluating and comparing both techniques as regard target coverage and doses to organs at risk (OAR). methods: Twenty patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma were treated by 3d-CRT technique and another 20 patients were treated by ImRT. A dosimetric comparison was done by performing two plans for the same patient using Eclipse planning system (version 8.6). Results: ImRT had a better tumor coverage and conformity index compared to 3d-CRT plans (P value of 0.001 and 0.004), respectively. As for the dose homogeneity it was also better in the ImRT plans and the reason for this was attributed to the dose inhomogeneity at the photon/electron junction in the 3d-CRT plans (P value 0.032). Also, doses received by the risk structures, particularly parotids, was significantly less in the ImRT plans than those of 3d-CRT (P value 0.001). Conclusion: ImRT technique was clearly able to increase the dose delivery to the target volume, improve conformity and homogeneity index and spare the parotid glands in comparison to 3d-CRT technique.

Growth of ZnO self-converted 2d nanosheet zeolitic imidazolate framework membranes by an ammoniaassisted strategy

Shaping crystalline porous materials such as metal organic frameworks （mOFs） and zeolites into two-dimensional （2d） nanosheet forms is highly desirable for developing high-performance molecular sieving membranes. However, conventional exfoliation-deposition is complex and challenging for the large-scale fabrication of nanosheet mOF tubular membranes. Here, for the first time, we report a direct growth technique by ZnO self-conversion and ammonia assistance to fabricate zeolitic imidazolate framework （ZIF） membranes consisting of 2d nanosheets on porous hollow fiber substrates; the membranes are suitable for large-scale industrial gas separation processes. The proposed fabrication process for ZIF nanosheet membranes is based on the localized self-conversion of a pre-deposited thin layer of ZnO in a ligand solution containing ammonium hydroxide as a modulator. The resulting ZIF 2d nanosheet tubular membrane is highly oriented and only 50 nm in thickness. It exhibits excellent molecular sieving performance, with high H2 permeance and selectivity for H2/CO2 separation. This technique shows great promise in mOF nanosheet membrane fabrication for large-scale molecular sieving applications.

The Impact of medical Profession Type, Gender, and Years of Experience on Thinking Styles: What Are the Implications for Patient Safety?

Background: Healthcare providers were faced daily with many decision-making that impacted patients’ safety. According to dual process theory, there were two types of thinking: Experiential style (ES) and Rational Style (RS). Both thinking styles had an impact on individuals’ decisions making. Therefore, the aim of this study was to find out nurses’ and physicians’ styles of thinking and how this impacted patients’ safety. design: A cross-sectional study. methods: Nurses and physicians sample of adults (n = 308), 190 (61.7%) of the sample were nurses and 118 (38.3%) of the sample were physicians. Participants completed a self-report online survey, which included demographic information followed by questionnaires to measure thinking style and a cognitive puzzle to see if the medical error was associated with certain styles of thinking. Results: The main findings were that nurses (m = 2.41, Sd = 0.37) had significantly higher scores compared to physicians (m = 2.29, Sd = 0.39) in their ES, t(305) = 2.73, p = 0.007;with medium effect size, d = 0.37692. Conclusion: Nurses differed from physicians in ES where nurses had a significantly higher score than physicians which could be positive for patients’ safety as higher ES would report errors compared to lower ES.

A tremendous amount of data from research was published over the past decades concerning the roles of different vitamins in various gastrointestinal *** instance,most vitamins showed an inverse relationship with the risk of colorectal carcinoma as well as other malignancies like gastric and esophageal cancer in observational trials,however interventional trials failed to prove a clear beneficial preventive *** the other hand,more solid evidence was obtained from high quality studies for a role of certain vitamins in specific *** for this include the therapeutic role of vitamin E in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis,the additive role of vitamins B12 and d to the standard therapy of chronic hepatitis C virus,the role of vitamin C in reducing the risk of gallstones,the positive outcome with vitamin B12 in patients with aphthous stomatitis,and the beneficial effect of vitamin d and B1 in patients with inflammatory bowel *** potential uses are yet to be elaborated,like those on celiac disease,pancreatic cancer,pancreatitis,cholestasis and other potential *** from several ongoing interventional trials are expected to add to the current knowledge over the coming few *** that vitamin supplementation is psychologically accepted by patients as a natural compound with relative safety and low cost,their use should be encouraged in the fields where positive data are available.

Assessing the impact of artificial recharge on groundwater in an overexploited aquifer: A case study in the Cheria Basin, North-East of Algeria

The Cheria region in Northeastern Algeria has been facing aquifer overexploitation by the agricultural sector and prolonged droughts,resulting in a considerable decline in groundwater *** study investigates the feasibility of implementing artificial recharge techniques to replenish the Eocene aquifer which serves as the primary water source in the Cheria region.A 3d transient numerical model,based on the finite difference method,was used to simulate groundwater flow from 2021 to 2031 using Visual mOdFLOW *** the modelling process,three scenarios were considered:(1)including pumping without a recharge,(2)recharge of the entire area through efficient infiltration without pumping,and(3)artificial recharge using river water infiltration basins at two sites,draa douamis sinkholes and Eocene limestone *** simulation results showed that aquifer exploitation without recharge caused significant drawdowns,which were 3 m to 7 m in the north-eastern part and 8 m to 12 m in the central and southern *** contrast,the second scenario,involving recharge without pumping,showed a rise in groundwater levels of 2 m to 2.7 m in the north-eastern part and 3 m to 3.62 m in the central and southern *** third scenario,employing artificial recharge,indicated a positive response to artificial recharge,with increased piezometric levels at the proposed sites,signifying a beneficial impact on the *** findings underline the potential of artificial recharge as a promising approach to address the groundwater depletion and environmental issues in the Cheria Basin.
