Impact of Fenton and ozone on oxidation of wastewater containing nitroaromatic compounds

Fenton and ozone treatment was investigated at laboratory scale for the degradation of aqueous solutions of nitrobenzene （NB）. Effects of reactants concentration （O3, H2O2, and Fe（Ⅱ））, temperature, and pH on NB degradation were monitored. Reaction kinetic of these processes was also assessed. A rapid reaction took place for Fenton process at higher initial concentration of H2O2, higher temperatures, and more acidic conditions （pH 3）. Similarly, ozonation reaction exhibited rapid rates for higher ozone dose, higher temperatures, and more basic conditions （pH 11）. Complete NB degradation in 65 min was achieved using Fenton process. The conditions of complete elimination of 100 mg/L of initial NB concentration, were 250 mg/L of H202 concentration, pH 3, and 10 mg/L of Fe（Ⅱ） concentration. Under these conditions, 55% organic carbon elimination was achieved. Total organic carbon mineralization was attained in 240 rain reaction time by Fenton process with 900 mg/L of H202 concentration, and 30 mg/L of Fe（Ⅱ） concentration. Fenton reaction showed a pseudo-first order kinetic; the reaction rate constant was ranged from 0.0226 to 0.0658 min^-1. Complete NB degradation was also achieved for an ozone dose of the order of 2.5 g/L. The ozonation was studied at different ozone doses, different initial pH （7-11） and at different temperatures （15-35℃）. NB ozonation kinetic was represented by a bi-molecular kinetic model which was reduced to pseudo-first order kinetic. The pseudo-first order reaction rate constant was determined to increase at 20℃ from 0.004 to 0.020 min^-1 as the used ozone increased from 0.4 to 1.9 g/L.

Enhancing the Removal of Organic Matter and Nutrient from Wastewater by Using the Packed Bed Biological Reactor

Packed Bed biological Reactor (PBR) system has the potential to offer an effective and low-cost technology for upgrading the conventional wastewater treatment systems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of PBR in removing the organic matter and nutrient from different types of wastewater (primary treatment effluent and secondary treatment effluent (exit of biological unit)). The experiments were carried out in two laboratory-sized reactors with 4 L in volume made of Plexiglas. The reactor was filled with PET packing and the reactor was kept in a temperature-controlled water bath at 20°C. Wastewater samples used in this experiment were collected from Wadi Al-Arab wastewater treatment plant in Irbid, Jordan. The concentrations of COD, TN, and TP were 280 mg/l, 41.74 mg-N/l and 9 mg/l, respectively in the primary effluents. Also, the concentrations of COD, TN, and TP were 58 mg/l, 61.55 mg-N/l and 33 mg/l, respectively in the secondary effluents. The removal efficiencies of COD, TN, and TP were 52%, 52% and 79% respectively when using the primary effluent as an influent to the reactor. On the other hand, when using the secondary effluent as an influent to the reactor, the removal efficiencies of COD, TN, and TP were 30%, 77%, and 81%, respectively. Thus, this technique could be used as a posttreatment step for conventional biological wastewater treatment.

Agricultural Solids Waste in South of Jordan: Facts and Figures

Agricultural solid wastes in the southern part of Jordan were estimated and classified. Data collection method was used to determine the types and quantities of different agricultural solid wastes. Human excreta and cattle manure were found to be serious environmental problems in the region. Chemical analysis of different solid wastes showed variable organic and nitrogen content which affect the selection of treatment process. Anaerobic digestion (AD) was tested and found to be a suitable unit operation to treat a wide variety of agricultural solid wastes. Biogas production rate from AD ranged from 0.3 m3/kg COD to0.61 m3/kg COD which is considered 80% to 90% of yield. The optimum C/N ratio and TVS for AD was found to be 22 ± 2 and 70% ± 5%, respectively. The amount of energy that can be produced from energy crops and animal manures was estimated to be 12.8 Mtoe and 0.34 Mtoe, respectively. Methane biogas production rate was estimated to be37 m3/ton for substrate consist of mixture of different agricultural solid waste of 50% wastewater, 40% Cattle manure, 5% straw and 5% sawdust.
