The planning, d ev elo p m en t an d evenm ain ten an ce o f ro ad an d rail netw o rk s in such precarious terrain s are alw ays a challenging task becauseo f com plexities p osed by topography, geological stru ctu res, varied lithology an d neotectonics. Increasingp o p u latio n an d c o n stru ctio n o f roads have led to destab ilisatio n o f slopes, th u s leading to m ass w astingand m ovem ent, fu rth e r aggravation d u e to recen t events o f cloud bu rsts and u n p re c e d e n te d flash floods.v ulnerability analysis o f slopes is an im p o rta n t co m p o n e n t for th e ＂Landslide H azard A ssessm ent＂ and＂Slope Mass C h aracterisation＂ guide p lan n ers to p red ict an d choose suitable w ays for c o n stru ctio n ofroads and o th e r en g in eerin g stru ctu res. The pro b lem o f landslides along th e n ational highw ay-58 （nH-58） from Rishikesh to D evprayag is a co m m o n scene. The slopes along th e nH-58 b e tw e e n Jonk andRishikesh w ere investigated, w h ich experienced v ery heavy traffic especially from M arch to A ugust dueto pilgrim age to K edarnath shrine. On th e basis o f slope m ass rating （SMR） investigation, th e area falls instable class, an d landslide susceptibility score （LSS） values also indicate th a t th e slopes u n d e r investigationfall in low to m o d erate v ulnerability to landslide. More atte n tio n s should be paid to th e slopes toachieve g reater safe an d econom ic b enefits along th e highw ay.

Standard method design considerations for semi-quantification of total naphthenic acids in oil sands process affected water by mass spectrometry： A review

naphthenic acids are a complex class of thousands of naturally occurring aliphatic and alicyclic carboxylic acids found in oil sands bitumen and in the wastewater generated from bitumen processing. Dozens of analytical methods have been developed for the semiquantification of total naphthenic acids in water samples. However, different methods can give different results, prompting investigation into the comparability of the many methods. A review of important methodological features for analyzing total naphthenic acids is presented and informs the design of future standard methods for the semi- quantification of total naphthenic acids using mass spectrometry. The design considerations presented are a synthesis of discussions from an Environment and Climate Change Canada （ECCC） led taskforce of 10 laboratory experts from government, industry and academia during April 2016 and subsequent discussions between University of British Columbia and ECCC representatives. Matters considered are： extraction method, solvent, pH, and temperature; analysis instrumentation and resolution; choice of calibration standards; use of surrogate and internal standards; and use of online or offline separation prior to analysis. The design considerations are amenable to both time-of-flight and Orbitrap mass spectrometers.

Investigation on 1.07 μm laser emission in nd^(3+)-doped sodium fluoroborate glasses

Spectroscopic and fluorescence properties of nd 3＋ ions in sodium fluoroborate（SFB） glasses were prepared and characterized through optical absorption,emission and decay *** energy level analysis was carried out using free-ion Hamiltonian *** oscillator strengths were determined by measuring the area encompassed by the absorption peaks recorded for 1.0 mol.% nd 3＋-doped *** Judd-Ofelt parameters（2,4,6） were used to evaluate the laser characteristic parameters such as radiative transition probability（A R）,radiative decay time（τ R）,fluorescence branching ratio（β R） and stimulated emission cross-section（σ e） for the 4 F 3/2 metastable *** fluorescence spectra for different concentrations of nd 3＋ ions were recorded by exciting the samples at 514.5 nm Ar ＋ ion laser.

Small Islands DEMs and Topographic Attributes Analysis： A Comparative Study among SRTM-v4,1, ASTER-v2,1, High Topographic Contours Map and DGPS

Rising sea levels due to global warming and climate change impact may prove a disaster for small islands. Accurate DEM （digital elevation model） can help to understand SLR （sea level rise） impact, coastal zones flooding risks assessment and hydrological attributes modeling and extraction. Currently, DEMs are available from several different sources using active and passive remote sensing systems. This research compares absolute surface heights accuracies retrieved from three independent DEMs datasets. The Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission （SRTM-v4.1） and the Advanced Space borne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer （ASTER-v2.1） with 30-m pixel size, and a DEM-5 of 5-m spatial resolution generated from high topographic contour lines map at scale of 1：5,000 using simple Kriging interpolation method. Moreover, topographic attributes （slope and aspect） have been retrieved and compared. For the elevations validation purposes, a dataset of 400 GCPs uniformly distributed over the study site were used. These were measured using a DGPS assuring ± 1 and ± 2 cm accuracies, respectively, for planimerry and altimetry. The obtained results show that globally the landscape scale plays an important role in the selection of the DEM pixel size, which must reflect the real topographic attributes. Indeed, the derived DEM-5 from high topographic contours map （1：5,000） using simple Kriging exhibit the best accuracy of ±0.65 m which is less than the tolerance or the total error （±0.78 m） calculated based on errors sources propagation. Then, the results show an accuracy of ± 3.00 m for SRTM-v4.1 which is less than the absolute vertical height accuracy （±5.6 m） advocated by nASA for African continent and Middle-East regions. As well, the achieved ASTER accuracy was ± 8.40 m compared to the estimated error （±17.01 m） by USGS and JAXA. The anthropogenic CO column content in the atmosphere is derived from measurements with infrared grating spectrometers in Beijing,China,and Moscow,Russia,during 1992–*** specific variation characteristics and long-term variation trends of the CO column content in the atmosphere in these regions are *** evident variation trend of anthropogenic CO in the atmosphere for the Beijing region is not observed during 1992–2012,while for the Moscow region,it decreases yearly by about 1.4% for the same *** CO concentrations appear quite frequently in Beijing,but much less frequently in Moscow,except during the natural fire events in summer *** back trajectory analysis,the high CO concentration observed in Beijing can be attributed to the intensive CO emission sources in its surrounding areas.

Three-dimensional analysis of a faulted CO2 reservoir using an Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka approach to rock elastic properties and fault permeability

This work develops a three-dimensional(3D) multiscale model to analyze a complex carbon dioxide(CO_2) faulted reservoir that includes some key geologic features of the San Andreas and nearby faults southwest of the Kimberlina *** model uses the STOMP-CO2 code for flow modeling that is coupled to the ABAQUS~ finite element package for geomechanical analysis.A 3D ABAQUS~ finite element model is developed that contains a large number of 3D solid elements with two nearly parallel faults whose damage zones and cores are discretized using the same continuum *** zones with different mineral compositions are considered:shale,sandstone,fault damaged sandstone,fault damaged shale,and fault ***' elastic properties that govern their poroelastic behavior are modeled by an Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka approach(EMTA).which can account for up to 15 mineral *** permeability of fault damage zones affected by crack density and orientations is also predicted by an EMTA formulation.A STOMP-CO2 grid that exactly maps the ABAQUS~ finite element model is built for coupled hydromechanical *** of the reservoir assuming three different crack pattern situations(including crack volume fraction and orientation) for the fault damage zones are performed to predict the potential leakage of CO_2 due to cracks that enhance the permeability of the fault damage *** results illustrate the important effect of the crack orientation on fault permeability that can lead to substantial leakage along the fault attained by the expansion of the CO_2 *** hydraulic fracture and tendency for the faults to slip are also examined and discussed in terms of stress distributions and geomechanical properties.

This paper opens a series of papers aimed at finalizing the development of the lattice Boltzmann method for complex hydrodynamic *** lattice Boltzmann method is introduced at the elementary level of the linear advection *** are provided on lifting the target macroscopic equations to a kinetic equation,and,after that,to the fully discrete lattice Boltzmann *** over-relaxation method is put forward as a cornerstone of the second-order temporal discretization,and its enhancement with the use of the entropy estimate is explained in detail.A new asymptotic expansion of the entropy estimate is derived,and implemented in the sample *** is shown that the lattice Boltzmann method provides a computationally efficient way of numerically solving the advection equation with a controlled amount of numerical dissipation,while retaining positivity.
