Comparison of 25 MHz and 50 MHz ultrasound biomicroscopy for imaging of the lens and its related diseases

AIM： To compare the results of 25 MHz and 50 MHz ultrasound biomicroscopy（UBM） regarding the image characteristics of the lens and its related diseases and to discuss the application value of 25 MHz UBM in ophthalmology. METHODS： A total of 302 patients（455 eyes） were included in this study from November 2014 to May 2015. Patient ages ranged from 5 to 89 y（mean±SD： 61.0±17.7 y）. Different cross-sectional images of the lens were collected to compare and analyze the image characteristics and anterior segment parameters using 25 MHz and 50 MHz UBM in axial and longitudinal scanning modes, respectively. SPSS 19.0 for Windows, paired t-tests and B＆A plot analysis were used for data analysis, and a value of P〈0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS： The 25 MHz UBM images displayed the lens shape more clearly than 50 MHz UBM images. Particularly for cataracts, the whole opacity of the lens was shown by 25 MHz UBM, but 50 MHz UBM only showed part of the lens. The means of the anterior segment parameters obtained using 25 MHz and 50 MHz UBM were as follows： central corneal thickness： 0.55±0.03 and 0.51±0.04 mm, respectively; central anterior chamber depth： 2.48±0.54 and 2.56±0.56 mm, respectively; and central lens thickness： 4.26±0.62 and 4.15±0.56 mm, respectively. A statistically significant difference was found between the results obtained with 25 MHz UBM and those obtained with 50 MHz UBM. The two devices had a good agreement in measuring the anterior segment parameters. CONCLUSION： The 25 MHz UBM had an obvious advantage in showing the lens shape. It can provide reliable imaging of the lens and its related diseases and has a high application value for ophthalmology.

Effect of pine wood nematode invasion on pine community functions in the Pinghu region, Zhejiang Province, eastern China

In order to investigate the effect of invastion by pine wood nematode(PWN), this study analyzed several functional indices, i.e., the increment in DBH and stand volume and biomass, in the damaged stands with various mixed percentages of Pinus massoniana and P. thunbergii and with different levels of damage. According to the results of rate of change in increment of DBH and stand volume, the forest ecosystem resistance against PWN increased with a reduction in the mixed ratio of pine. The resistance was highest with a mixed percentage of 50%. The invasion of PWN changed the corresponding relationship of increment between DBH and stand volume(pure stands > 7:3 conifer and broadleaf > 6:4 conifer and broadleaf > 5:5 conifer and broadleaf) among the P. thunbergii stands when there is no damage, but for P. massoniana stands this phenomenon did not occur. For the increment rate of DBH and stand volume, this significant change in P. thunbergii forest indicates that the resistance of pure P. thunbergii forest was higher than that of P. massoniana. The invasion of PWN accelerates the succession from pure stands to mixed stands and then to the broadleaf evergreen stands.

Establishment and validation of an adherence prediction system for lifestyle interventions in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS)is an extremely important analytical technique that is widely used in organic *** is the only approach to capture biomarker features of organic matter and provides the key evidence for oil-source correlation and thermal maturity ***,the conventional way of processing and interpreting the mass chromatogram is both timeconsuming and labor-intensive,which increases the research cost and restrains extensive applications of this *** overcome this limitation,a correlation model is developed based on the convolution neural network(CNN)to link the mass chromatogram and biomarker features of samples from the Triassic Yanchang Formation,Ordos Basin,*** this way,the mass chromatogram can be automatically *** research first performs dimensionality reduction for 15 biomarker parameters via the factor analysis and then quantifies the biomarker features using two indexes(*** and PMI)that represent the organic matter thermal maturity and parent material type,***,training,interpretation,and validation are performed multiple times using different CNN models to optimize the model structure and hyper-parameter setting,with the mass chromatogram used as the input and the obtained MI and PMI values for supervision(label).The optimized model presents high accuracy in automatically interpreting the mass chromatogram,with R2values typically above 0.85 and0.80 for the thermal maturity and parent material interpretation results,*** significance of this research is twofold:(i)developing an efficient technique for geochemical research;(ii)more importantly,demonstrating the potential of artificial intelligence in organic geochemistry and providing vital references for future related studies.

SUMOylation and deacetylation affect NF-κB p65 activity induced by high glucose in human lens epithelial cells

AIM: To explore the effects of IκBα SUMOylation and NF-κB p65 deacetylation on NF-κB p65 activity induced by high glucose in cultured human lens epithelial cells(HLECs).METHODS: HLECs(SRA01/04) were cultured with 5.5, 25, and 50 mmol/L glucose media for 24 h, and with 50 mmol/L glucose media for 0, 12, and 24 h respectively. SUMO1 and SIRT1 expressions were detected by reverse transcriptionpolymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) and Western blot(WB). IκBα and NF-κB p65 expressions were detected by WB. With NAC, DTT, MG132 or Resveratrol(RSV) treatment, SUMO1 and SIRT1 expressions were detected by WB. Protein expression localizations were examined by immunofluorescence and co-immunofluorescence. The effects of SUMO1 or SIRT1 overexpression, as well as MG132 and RSV, on the nuclear expression and activity of IκBα and NF-κB p65 were analyzed by immunoblot and dual luciferase reporter gene ***: SUMO1 and SIRT1 expressions were influenced by high glucose in mRNA and protein levels, which could be blocked by NAC or DTT. SUMO1 was down-regulated by using MG132, and SIRT1 was up-regulated under RSV treatment. IκBα nuclear expression was attenuated and NF-κB p65 was opposite under high glucose, while IκBα and NF-κB p65 location was transferred to the nucleus. SUMO1 or SIRT1 overexpression and MG132 or RSV treatment affected the nuclear expression and activity of IκBα and NF-κB p65 under high glucose ***: IκBα SUMOylation and NF-κB p65 deacetylation affect NF-κB p65 activity in cultured HLECs under high glucose, and presumably play a significant role in controlling diabetic cataract.

Vortex identification based on the Liutex method and its effect on fish passage upstream

Fishway research is important for mitigating the fragmentation of river habitats caused by hydraulic *** vertical slit fishway is a broadly used fishway type because of its high efficiency and adaptability to water ***,the resulting vortex current disrupts the fish passage hence directly affecting fish *** study aims to accurately capture the vortex structure in the fishway and analyze the effect of vortex elements(vortex structure,vortex intensity,etc.)on *** conducted an analysis of the 3-D current flow field in the fishway through the utilization of an experimental model and the large eddy simulation(LES)***,we captured the vortex information in the fishway at different flow rates using the Liutex vortex identification method and investigated the effect of the vortex on fish *** results revealed that the structures inside the fishway pool occupy most of the room,however,the areas with higher vortex strength were primarily located in the vortex near the vertical seam and the mainstream,the vortex strength inside the fishway gradually increases with increasing flow,suppressing fish *** experienced significantly increased resistance when encountering strong *** suggests that the vortex may act as a physical barrier to fish *** findings highlight the potential negative effects of vortex on fish movement and reiterate the importance of understanding vortex dynamics for aquatic environmental *** an effective tool for identifying vortices in fluid flow,the Liutex method demonstrates features of vortex within the fishway,thereby providing important insights into the interaction between fluid dynamics and aquatic organisms.
