Inclusions with sizes less than 1 μm in molten steel are difficult to float up to the molten steel and slag interface owing to their slow terminal velocity. Thus, increasing the size of inclusion is essential for accelerating the removal of inclusions. Polystyrene particles simulating inclusions in molten steel were quantified by direct observation of the particle collision behavior in a turbulent flow in a water model. The box-counting fractal dimension of particles was calculated by processing the binary images of aggregated particles. The fractal dimension of the outer contours of the single plastic particles was smaller than that of the aggregated particles. The fractal dimension was varied from 1.14 to 1.35. When two or more monomer particles collide, the aggregates are separated more easily, as the temperature increases from 40 to 80 ℃. The aggregated particles were loose and easy to separate in the high-temperature aqueous solution. The effect of temperature on the surface tension of liquid and the interracial tension of solid and liquid is obvious. The particles are wetting in the water solution at a temperature more than 60 ℃. The relationship between the velocity of the particles and the fractal dimension of the solid particles with the equivalent diameter was discussed.

We report a synthesis of microporous organic nanotube networks（MONNs） by a combination of hyper cross-linking and molecular templating of core-shell bottlebrush copolymers. The intrabrush and interbrush cross-linking of polystyrene（PS） shell layer in the core-shell bottlebrush copolymers led to the formation of micropores and large-sized nanopores（meso/macrospores） in MONNs, respectively, while selective removal of polylactide（PLA） core layer generated mesoporous tubular structure. The size of PLA-templated mesoporous cores and porous structure both at micro-and meso-scale could be controlled by simple tuning of the ratio of core/shell or the PLA core fraction in the bottlebrush precursors. Moreover, the resultant MONNs showed a highly selective adsorption capacity for the positively charged dyes on the basis of multi-porosity and carboxylate group-rich structure. In addition, MONNs also exhibited effective performance in size-selective adsorption of biomacromolecules. This work represents a new avenue for the preparation of MONNs and also provides a new application for molecular bottlebrushes in nanotechnology.

Severe acute pancreatitis in the elderly: Etiology and clinical characteristics

AIM: To investigate the etiology and clinical characteristics of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) in elderly patients (≥ 60 years of age). METHODS: We reviewed retrospectively all the SAP cases treated in Xuanwu Hospital in Beijing between 2000 and 2007. RESULTS: In 169 patients with SAP, 94 were elderly and 16 died. Biliary and idiopathic etiologies were the first two causes that accounted for over 90% of SAP in the elderly. Biliary, hyperlipemic and alcoholic etiologies were the first three causes in the young. The proportion of co- morbidity of cholelithiasis, biliary infection, hypertension and coronary heart disease in the aged was significantly higher than that in their young partners. The scores of APACHE Ⅱ and Ranson were also significantly higher in the elderly except the CT score. Organ failures were more common in the elderly, but the local pancreatic complications were not different between the two groups. Mortality of the aged was correlated with the severity of SAP, multiple co-morbidity and incidence of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). MODS was the main cause of death. CONCLUSION: The etiology of SAP in the elderly is quite different from that in the young. Biliary and unknown factors are main causes in the aged. The elderly are subject to major organ failures but there is no difference in the occurrence of local pancreatic complications between the elderly and the young. It is crucial to monitor and improve the functions of major organs so as to prevent MODS in the aged with SAP.

To solve the problems in knowledge management system （KMS）, such as information sharing, the ability to extend and re-engineer, and the reusable ability of legacy systems in distributed and heterogeneous environments. This article presents a method based on agent and ontology of designing KMS. This method consists of two agencies. One is knowledge agency with three agents supporting knowledge management process. The other is application agency with three agents supporting knowledge application. In this method, ontology is used to represent the knowledge in knowledge base and the content in the message exchanged among agents. To demonstrate the advantages of this method, experiments have been carried out and the results imply that this method is efficient and effective for small and medium-size enterprises to design KMS.

Microwave absorption properties of spherical NiO particles and Co0.2Ni0.4Zn0.4Fe2O4（CNZF） ferrites with single-layer and double-layer absorbers were studied in the frequency range of 2–18 GHz. The spherical NiO particles were synthesized by using a hydrothermal process, while the CNZF powders were prepared by using a sol–gel autoignition method. The double-layer absorbers, composed of 30 wt% NiO as matching layer and 30 wt% CNZF as absorption layer,with a total thickness of 3.2 mm, exhibited a maximum reflection loss（RL） of –67.0 d B at 9.2 GHz and an effective absorbing bandwidth below –10 d B to be 3.9 GHz from 7.0 to 10.9 GHz. The excellent microwave absorption performance of the double-layer absorbers should be ascribed to the high impedance matching ratio, the great microwave attenuation capability, and well-coupled layer.

A large number of spent selective catalytic reduction(SCR)denitration catalysts are produced after the ultra-low emission transformation of coal-fired power plants in *** to the China’s“Directory of National Hazardous Wastes(Version 2021)”,these spent vanadium-tungsten-titanium catalysts are classified as“HW50”hazardous waste,and their disposal and utilization processes have been strictly ***,an effective and low-cost technique was developed to treat and utilize these spent SCR catalysts by the vanadium-titanium magnetite sintering *** of adding spent SCR catalysts on the sintering production process and product quality indexes of sinter were *** results showed that adding spent SCR catalysts can improve the sintering granulation and green feed permeability,thereby increasing the productivity and flame front *** the addition proportion of spent SCR catalysts is less than 1 wt.%,the performance indexes of the finished sinter are basically equal to those of the finished sinter without adding spent SCR *** increasing the proportion of spent SCR catalysts to 2.0 wt.%results in a decrease in product quality indexes,which could be attributed to the increase in perovskite content in the finished sinter.
