Petrological and geochemical characteristics of the Ordovician-Silurian black shale in eastern Sichuan and western Hubei,South China:Differential sedimentary responses to tectonism and glaciation

During the Ordovician-Silurian transition period,the Yangtze area experienced significant environmental changes,which were recorded by the widely distributed black shale of the Upper Ordovician Wufeng and Lower Silurian Longmaxi formations.However,the petrological and geochemical analyses of the Upper Ordovician-Lower Silurian black shale in Well JY1(eastern Sichuan Basin)and Well YY2(western Hubei Province)drill cores show that there are some significant differences with respect to lithology,thickness,and geochemical characteristics despite the long-term similar variation trend in petrology and geochemistry.This may suggest some major environmental changes and their differential influence on black shale deposition in the Yangtze area.Based on the analyses of lithology,total organic carbon(TOC),Mo_(EF),and U_(EF),four long-term sedimentary cycles(one for the Wufeng Formation and three for the Longmaxi Formation)were identified in Well JY1.In Well YY2,only three long-term sedimentary cycles can be recognized(one for the Wufeng Formation and two for the Longmaxi Formation).Different from the gradual increase of the geochemical proxies(such as TOC,MoEF,and NiEF)followed by an abrupt decrease in the Wufeng Formation,these proxies of the Silurian sedimentary cycles in both wells exhibit an abrupt increase at the base followed by a gradual decrease,showing that controlling mechanisms for the Lower Silurian black shale deposition in the study areas were different from those of the Upper Ordovician black shale.However,the black shale of each Silurian cycle in Well JY1 is much thicker than that in Well YY2.Compared with the thick silty mudstone developed in Well JY1 during the Rhuddanian-Aeronian transition,there is a stratigraphic gap in Well YY2 except for a thin calcareous dolostone formed in a strongly restricted environment.These differences indicate that tectonism and glacial eustasy should be the key factors for black shale development,but their influences on the deposition of the Lower Silurian black shale varied

Ephrin-B2/EphA4 forward signaling is required for regulation of radial migration of cortical neurons in the mouse

Postmitotic neurons in the neocortex migrate to appropriate positions and form layered structures of nascent cortex during brain development. The migration of these neurons requires precise control and coordination of a large number of molecules such as axon guidance cues. The Eph-ephrin signaling pathway plays important roles in the development of the nervous system in a wide variety of ways, including cell segregation, axon pathfinding, and neuron migration. However, the role of ephrin-B2/ EphA4 signaling in cortical neuron migration remains elusive. Here we demonstrated that ephrin-B2 and its receptor EphA4 were expressed in complementary and overlapping patterns in the developing neocortex. Deletion of the EphA4 gene in the embryonic cerebral cortex resulted in faster migration of cortical neurons, whereas knockdown or overexpression of ephdn-B2 did not alter the normal process of migration. These results suggest that ephrin-B2 forward signaling through EphA4 is required for the precise control of cortical neuron migration.

Background:Parkinson’s disease(PD)is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases,neuropathologically characterized by misfolded protein aggregation,called Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites.PD is a slow-progressive disease with colonic dysfunction appearing in the prodromal stage and lasting throughout the course of the disease.Methods:In order to study PD pathology in the colon,we examined the age-dependent morphological and pathological changes in the colon of a PD mouse model expressing human wildtype α-synuclein(α-syn)fused with the green fluorescent protein(GFP),under the endogenous mouse α-syn promoter.Results:We observed an age-dependent progressive expression and accumulation of α-syn-GFP in the enteric neurons of Meissner’s(submucosal)and Auerbach’s(myenteric)plexuses of the colon.Additionally,the phosphorylation of α-syn at serine 129 also increased with age and the aggregation ofα-syn-GFP coincided with the appearance of motor deficits at 9 months of age.Furthermore,α-syn(-GFP)distinctly co-localized with different subtypes of neurons,as identified by immunohistochemical labeling of vasoactive intestinal peptide(VIP),neuronal nitric oxide synthase(nNOS),and calretinin.Conclusions:Our results show the development of α-syn pathology in the enteric neurons of the colon in a PD mouse model,which coincide with the appearance of motor deficits.Our mouse model possesses the potential and uniqueness for studying PD gastrointestinal dysfunction.

Transmission analysis of COVID-19 with discrete time imported cases: Tianjin and Chongqing as cases

In 2020,an unexpectedly large outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)epidemic was reported in China's Mainland.As we known,the epidemic was caused by imported cases in other provinces of China except for Hubei in 2020.In this paper,we developed a differential equation model with tracing isolation strategy with close contacts of newly confirmed cases and discrete time imported cases,to perform assessment and risk analysis for COVID-19 outbreaks in Tianjin and Chongqing city.Firstly,the model behavior without imported cases was given.Then,the real-time regeneration number in Tianjin and Chongqing city revealed a trend of rapidly rising,and then falling fast.Finally,sensitivity analysis demonstrates that the earlier with Wuhan lock-down,the fewer cases in these two cities.One can obtain that the tracing isolation of close contacts of newly confirmed cases could effectively control the spread of the disease.But it is not sensitive for the more contact tracing isolation days on confirmed cases,the fewer cases.Our investigation model could be potentially helpful to provide model building technology for the transmission of COVID-19.

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a rodent-borne disease caused by several serotypes of hantavirus and 90% of all reported HFRS cases occur in China. However, the dynamics of such outbreak, particularly the characteristics of two distinct annual peaks in China, are not well understood. Here, we investigate several of the biologically plausible causes for the peaks in monthly HFRS cases, and find that the key factor is the interplay between periodic transmission rates and rodent periodic birth rate. Analysis of dynamical model reveals that vaccination plays a significant role in the control of HFRS in China. Sensitive analysis of different interventions demonstrates that integrating rodent culling and environmental management with the current vaccination program is effective for HFRS control. Our results suggest that for diseases from animals to human beings, the features of both animals and humans beings should be taken into account in the control and prevention strategies.

The Closeby Habitable Exoplanet Survey(CHES) mission is proposed to discover habitable-zone Earth-like planets of nearby solar-type stars(~10 pc away from our solar system) via microarcsecond relative astrometry.The major scientific objectives of CHES are:to search for Earth Twins or terrestrial planets in habitable zones orbiting100 FGK nearby stars;further to conduct a comprehensive survey and extensively characterize nearby planetary systems.The primary payload is a high-quality,low-distortion,high-stability telescope.The optical subsystem is a coaxial three-mirror anastigmat(TMA) with a 1.2 m-aperture,0°.44 × 0°.44 field of view and 500 nm-900 nm working wave band.The camera focal plane is composed of a mosaic of 81 scientific CMOS detectors each with4 k × 4 k pixels.The heterodyne laser interferometric calibration technology is employed to ensure microarcsecond level(1 μas) relative astrometry precision to meet the requirements for detection of Earth-like planets.The CHES satellite operates at the Sun-Earth L2 point and observes all the target stars for 5 yr.CHES will offer the first direct measurements of true masses and inclinations of Earth Twins and super-Earths orbiting our neighbor stars based on microarcsecond astrometry from space.This will definitely enhance our understanding of the formation of diverse nearby planetary systems and the emergence of other worlds for solar-type stars,and finally provide insights to the evolution of our own solar system.

Pulsar candidate classification with deep convolutional neural networks

As the performance of dedicated facilities has continually improved, large numbers of pulsar candidates are being received, which makes selecting valuable pulsar signals from the candidates challenging. In this paper, we describe the design for a deep convolutional neural network(CNN) with 11 layers for classifying pulsar candidates. Compared to artificially designed features, the CNN chooses the subintegrations plot and sub-bands plot for each candidate as inputs without carrying biases. To address the imbalance problem, a data augmentation method based on synthetic minority samples is proposed according to the characteristics of pulsars. The maximum pulses of pulsar candidates were first translated to the same position, and then new samples were generated by adding up multiple subplots of pulsars. The data augmentation method is simple and effective for obtaining varied and representative samples which keep pulsar characteristics. In experiments on the HTRU 1 dataset, it is shown that this model can achieve recall of 0.962 and precision of 0.963.

Dear Editor,W e write to present a case report of transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy(TPRK)without mitomycin-C(MMC)for irregular astigmatism after femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis(FS-LASIK)flap complications.Written informed consent was obtained from the patient to allow the publication of this case and associated accompanying images.The study was conducted in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration.TPRK is a surgical procedure which uses an excimer laser to ablation of both the corneal epithelium and stroma,which is widely used in clinic[1-2].The procedure may be conducted in cases where there is notable topographic irregularity or scarring following complications with the LASIK flap.Corneal haze is a potential complication following TPRK,and the use of MMC as a prophylactic agent against postoperative corneal haze has been demonstrated to significantly reduce its formation after TPRK/photorefractive keratectomy(PRK).

Comparison of cytokine levels in prostatic secretion between the Ⅲa and Ⅲb subtypes of prostatitis

Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome(CP/CPPS),also known as National Institutes of Health(NIH)type Ⅲ prostatitis,is a common disorder with an unclear etiology and no known curative treatments.Based on the presence or absence of leukocytes in expressed prostatic secretion(EPS),CP/CPPS is classifiedfurther into Illa(inflammatory)and Illb(noninflammatory)subtypes.However,the severity of symptoms is not entirely consistent with the white blood cell(WBC)count.Following the preliminary finding of a link between inflammatory cytokines and CP/CPPS,we performed this clinical study with the aim of identifying cytokines that are differentially expressed according to whether the prostatitis subtype is Ⅲa or Ⅲb.We found that granulocyte colony-stimulating factor(G-CSF),interleukin-18(IL-18),and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1(MCP-1)levels were significantly elevated and interferon-inducible protein-10(IP-10)and platelet-derived growth factor-BB(PDGF-BB)levels were downregulated in the EPS of patients with type Ⅲa prostatitis.In a word,it is a meaningful study in which we investigate the levels of various cytokines in EPS according to whether prostatitis is the Ⅲa or Ⅲb subtype.The combination of G-CSF,IL-18,MCP-1,IP-10,and PDGF-BB expression levels could form a basis for classification,diagnosis,and therapeutic targets in clinical P/CPPS.

Electronic structure regulation and built-in electric field synergistically strengthen photocatalytic nitrogen fixation performance on Ti-BiOBr/TiO_(2)heterostructure

At present,industrial synthetic ammonia was still obtained through the Hubble-Bosch process,with large energy consumption.It is a research hotspot to realize green synthetic ammonia by using solar energy.The difficulty of photocatalytic ammonia synthesis was that the photo-excited electrons have not enough energy to active N≡N.In this study,Ti was doped into BiOBr by one-step hydrothermal method,which was oxidized into TiO_(2)when the doping amount reaches the maximum,in situ forming Ti_(0.31)B_(0.69)OB/TiO_(2)composites.Benefiting from the synergistic effect of Ti doping and S-scheme heterojunction,the synthetic ammonia efficiency of Ti_(0.31)B_(0.69)OB/TiO_(2)-11.96 reached 1.643 mmol·g_(cat)^(-1)at mild conditions and without hole scavenger for up to 7 h,the efficiency of synthetic ammonia is 115 times,10.5 times and 3.3 times of that of BiOBr,Ti_(0.31)B_(0.69)OB and TiO_(2),respectively.Specifically,DFT calculation confirms that Ti doping accurately refine the electronic structure of BiOBr,facilitate nitrogen adsorption activation and reduce hydrogenation reaction energy barrier,thus accelerating the reaction kinetics of photocatalytic nitrogen reduction(NRR),Meanwhile,constructing S-scheme heterojunction boosts the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron-hole pairs,improving the reduction ability of electrons in the conduction band of TiO_(2)and the oxidation ability of holes in the valence band of Ti_(0.31)B_(0.69)OB.
