Lacustrine sediments accumulate pollutants that input from the lake watershed and can be released to the water column by sediment resuspension; thus, pollutants can change their bioavailability and exert adverse effects to aquatic biota. Shallow-urban lakes are particularly susceptible to receive pollutants from urban discharges and sediment resuspension. Lake Xochimilco, in Mexico City, an urban-shallow lake, faces multiple problems： urban sprawl, overexploitation of aquifers, drying of springs, discharge of wastewater from treatment plants, and sediment resuspension. The aquatic biota living in this ecosystem is continuously exposed to the release of pollutants from the sediments. We assessed the risk that pollutants released from sediments from Lake Xochimilco, Touristic（TZ） and Agriculture zone（AZ）, can exert on a native amphibian species of the lake（Ambystoma mexicanum） through exposure bioassays to sediment elutriates. We evaluate alterations in the amphibian by three approaches： biochemical（level of lipid peroxidation,LPO）, cellular（ultrastructure） and the liver histology of A. mexicanum and we compare them with a batch control. Additionally, we assessed heavy metals（Pb, Cd and Hg） in *** from TZ showed the highest concentrations of the metals assessed. Organisms exposed to sediment elutriates from either study sites showed higher LPO values than control organisms（p 〈 0.05）. Organisms exposed to elutriates from the TZ showed the most conspicuous damages： hepatic vasodilation of sinusoids, capillaries with erythrocytes,leukocyte infiltration and cytoplasmic vacuolation in hepatocytes. The biological responses assessed reflected the risk that faces A. mexicanum when is exposed for prolonged periods to sediment resuspension in Lake Xochimilco.

To study the molecular mechanisms involved in the hepatoprotective effects of naringenin (NAR) on carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced liver fibrosis. METHODSThirty-two male Wistar rats (120-150 g) were randomly divided into four groups: (1) a control group (n = 8) that received 0.7% carboxy methyl-cellulose (NAR vehicle) 1 mL/daily p.o.; (2) a CCl4 group (n = 8) that received 400 mg of CCl4/kg body weight i.p. 3 times a week for 8 wk; (3) a CCl4 + NAR (n = 8) group that received 400 mg of CCl4/kg body weight i.p. 3 times a week for 8 wk and 100 mg of NAR/kg body weight daily for 8 wk p.o.; and (4) an NAR group (n = 8) that received 100 mg of NAR/kg body weight daily for 8 wk p.o. After the experimental period, animals were sacrificed under ketamine and xylazine anesthesia. Liver damage markers such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (AP), γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (γ-GTP), reduced glutathione (GSH), glycogen content, lipid peroxidation (LPO) and collagen content were measured. The enzymatic activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) was assessed. Liver histopathology was performed utilizing Masson’s trichrome and hematoxylin-eosin stains. Zymography assays for MMP-9 and MMP-2 were carried out. Hepatic TGF-β, α-SMA, CTGF, Col-I, MMP-13, NF-κB, IL-1, IL-10, Smad7, Smad3, pSmad3 and pJNK proteins were detected via western blot. RESULTSNAR administration prevented increases in ALT, AP, γ-GTP, and GPx enzymatic activity; depletion of GSH and glycogen; and increases in LPO and collagen produced by chronic CCl4 intoxication (P 4. Although zymography assays showed that CCl4 produced an increase in MMP-9 and MMP-2 gelatinase activity; interestingly, NAR administration was associated with normal MMP-9 and MMP-2 activity (P < 0.05). Different effects of ghrelin, des-acyl ghrelin and obestatin on gastroduodenal motility in conscious rats

Three peptides, ghrelin, des-acyl ghrelin and obestatin are derived from a common prohormone, preproghrelin by posttranslational processing, originating from endocrine cells in the stomach. To examine the effects of these peptides, we applied the manometric mea- surement of gastrointestinal motility in freely moving conscious rat models. Ghrelin exerts stimulatory ef- fects on the motility of antrum and duodenum in both fed and fasted state of animals. Des-acyl ghrelin exerts inhibitory effects on the motility of antrum, but not on the motility of duodenum in the fasted state of ani- mals. Obestatin exerts inhibitory effects on the motility of antrum and duodenum in the fed state, but not in the fasted state of animals. NPY Y2 or Y4 receptors in the brain may mediate the action of ghrelin, CRF type 2 receptors in the brain mediate the action of des-acyl ghrelin, whereas CRF type 1 and type 2 receptors in the brain mediate the action of obestatin. Vagal afferent pathways might be involved in the action of ghre- lin, but not involved in the action of des-acyl ghrelin, whereas vagal afferent pathways might be partially involved in the action of obestatin.

Removal of Anionic Metal Ions from Wastewater by Hydroxide-type Adsorbents

Generally speaking,anionic metal concentrations in wastewater from industries and mineral processing plants are well above the allowed limits for effluent set by the Ministry of Environment of Japan. Nowadays,the removal of anionic ions has been considered difficult and development of new process is desperately needed. In this paper,we report the development of three hydroxide-type adsorbents,illustrating their adsorption efficiency in removing As,Se,Mo and Sb ions from aqueous solutions. The main finding of this work was that the adsorption behavior was influenced very much by both the pH and the adsorbent concentration. Nevertheless,the newly developed hydroxide-type adsorbents were very effective in reducing the concentration of those anionic ions.

This paper presents the basic principles of three different types of separating methods and a general guideline for choosing the most effective method for sorting plastic mixtures. It also presents the results of the tests carried out for separation of PVC, ABS and PET from different kinds of plastic mixtures in order to improve the grade of the raw input used in mechanical or feedstock recycling.

The design of flexible composite electrodes has become the top priority in energy storage devices for the development of future wearable intelligent ***,searching for fully integrated,ultrathin flexible composite electrodes with satisfying electrochemical performance is still a major ***,we introduce a nanoporous gold metallic glass(MG) ribbon-based composite electrode with excellent electric conductivity,mechanical flexibility,and extra capacitance by integrating polypyrrole(PPy) into wrinkled nanoporous ribbon(NPG@MG).The freestanding,ultrathin,highly conductive and flexible" nature of the composite electrode prevents the conducting polymer from structural instability resulting from the volume swell and shrink during the charging/discharging circulation,and the packed PPy provides protection for the wrinkled topology on the surface of the MG *** capacitance of pure NPG@MG-PPy composite electrode reached 393 mF·cm^(-2).The ultra-thin all-solid-state flexible supercapacitor demonstrates an excellent capacitance of 172 mF·cM^(-2)(14.8 F·cm^(-3)),accompanied by a superior cycling capability after 8000 charge/discharge cycles attributed to mechanical *** areal energy density also reached 0.74 mWh·cm^(-3)(9μWh·cm^(-2)) at a power density of 1 μW·cm^(-2).This work provides valuable concepts on the design of PPy-based hybrid materials for flexible energy storage systems with greatly enhanced electrochemical performances.
