Thermoelectric energy harvesting for internet of things devices using machine learning:A review

Initiatives to minimise battery use,address sustainability,and reduce regular maintenance have driven the challenge to use alternative power sources to supply energy to devices deployed in Internet of Things(IoT)networks.As a key pillar of fifth generation(5G)and beyond 5G networks,IoT is estimated to reach 42 billion devices by the year 2025.Thermoelectric generators(TEGs)are solid state energy harvesters which reliably and renewably convert thermal energy into electrical energy.These devices are able to recover lost thermal energy,produce energy in extreme environments,generate electric power in remote areas,and power micro‐sensors.Applying the state of the art,the authorspresent a comprehensive review of machine learning(ML)approaches applied in combination with TEG‐powered IoT devices to manage and predict available energy.The application areas of TEG‐driven IoT devices that exploit as a heat source the temperature differences found in the environment,biological structures,machines,and other technologies are summarised.Based on detailed research of the state of the art in TEG‐powered devices,the authors investigated the research challenges,applied algorithms and application areas of this technology.The aims of the research were to devise new energy prediction and energy management systems based on ML methods,create supervised algorithms which better estimate incoming energy,and develop unsupervised and semi‐supervised ap-proaches which provide adaptive and dynamic operation.The review results indicate that TEGs are a suitable energy harvesting technology for low‐power applications through their scalability,usability in ubiquitous temperature difference scenarios,and long oper-ating lifetime.However,TEGs also have low energy efficiency(around 10%)and require a relatively constant heat source.

Currently,there is no cure for traumatic spinal co rd injury but one therapeutic approach showing promise is gene therapy.In this systematic review and meta-analysis,we aim to assess the efficacy of gene therapies in pre-clinical models of spinal cord injury and the risk of bias.In this metaanalysis,registe red at PROSPERO(Registration ID:CRD42020185008),we identified relevant controlled in vivo studies published in English by searching the PubMed,Web of Science,and Embase databases.No restrictions of the year of publication were applied and the last literature search was conducted on August 3,2020.We then conducted a random-effects meta-analysis using the restricted maximum likelihood estimator.A total of 71 studies met our inclusion crite ria and were included in the systematic review.Our results showed that overall,gene therapies were associated with improvements in locomotor score(standardized mean difference[SMD]:2.07,95%confidence interval[CI]:1.68-2.47,Tau^(2)=2.13,I^(2)=83.6%)and axonal regrowth(SMD:2.78,95%CI:1.92-3.65,Tau^(2)=4.13,I^(2)=85.5%).There was significant asymmetry in the funnel plots of both outcome measures indicating the presence of publication bias.We used a modified CAMARADES(Collaborative Approach to M eta-Analysis and Review of Animal Data in Experimental Studies)checklist to assess the risk of bias,finding that the median score was 4(IQR:3-5).In particula r,reports of allocation concealment and sample size calculations were lacking.In conclusion,gene therapies are showing promise as therapies for spinal co rd injury repair,but there is no consensus on which gene or genes should be targeted.

This article presents the results of experimental investigation of heat transfer process, carried out using the model of heat exchanger. Two-phase statically stable foam flow was used as a heat transfer fluid. Heat exchanger model consisted of staggered tube bank. Experimental results are presented with the focus on influence of tube position in the line of the bank, volumetric void component and velocity of gas component of the foam. The phenomena of liquid draining in cellular foam flow and its influence on heat transfer rate has also been discussed. The experimental results have been generalized by relationship between Nusselt, Reynolds and Prandtl numbers.

BACKGROUND Helicobacter pylori and the stomach microbiome play a crucial role in gastric carcinogenesis,and detailed characterization of the microbiome is necessary for a better understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease.There are two common modalities for microbiome analysis:DNA(16S rRNA gene)and RNA(16S rRNA transcript)sequencing.The implications from the use of one or another sequencing approach on the characterization and comparability of the mucosal microbiome in gastric cancer(GC)are poorly studied.AIM To characterize the microbiota of GC using 16S rRNA gene and its transcript and determine difference in the bacterial composition.METHODS In this study,316 DNA and RNA samples extracted from 105 individual stomach biopsies were included.The study cohort consisted of 29 healthy control individuals and 76 patients with GC.Gastric tissue biopsy samples were collected from damaged mucosa and healthy mucosa at least 5 cm from the tumor tissue.From the controls,healthy stomach mucosa biopsies were collected.From all biopsies RNA and DNA were extracted.RNA was reverse transcribed into cDNA.V1-V2 region of bacterial 16S rRNA gene from all samples were amplified and sequenced on an Illumina MiSeq platform.Bray-Curtis algorithm was used to construct sample-similarity matrices abundances of taxonomic ranks in each sample type.For significant differences between groups permutational multivariate analysis of variance and Mann-Whitney test followed by false-discovery rate test were used.RESULTS Microbial analysis revealed that only a portion of phylotypes(18%-30%)overlapped between microbial profiles obtained from DNA and RNA samples.Detailed analysis revealed differences between GC and controls depending on the chosen modality,identifying 17 genera at the DNA level and 27 genera at the RNA level.Ten of those bacteria were found to be different from the control group at both levels.The key taxa showed congruent results in various tests used;however,differences in 7 bacteria taxa were found uniquely only at the DNA

Vinyl acetate radical emulsion polymerization in water with GF51 silane co-monomer was performed by semi continuous way. The GF51 impacts on dispersion rheology as well on films and bonding strength properties were determined. It should be stated that even low quantities of GF51 （up to 6% from VAc） determined high viscosity of dispersions. The GF51 modified films have low water absorption and high affinity to glass. Molecular mass and thermal properties of GF51 modified polymers were determined accordingly.

Flat metaoptics components are looking to replace classical optics elements and could lead to extremely compact biophotonics devices if integrated with on-chip light sources and detectors.However,using metasurfaces to shape light into wide angular range wavefronts with high efficiency,as is typically required in high-contrast microscopy applications,remains a challenge.Here we demonstrate curved GaAs metagratings integrated on vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers(VCSELs)that enable on-chip illumination in total internal reflection and dark field microscopy.Based on an unconventional design that circumvents the aspect ratio dependent etching problems in monolithic integration,we demonstrate off-axis emission centred at 60°in air and 63°in glass with>90%and>70%relative deflection efficiency,respectively.The resulting laser beam is collimated out-of-plane but maintains Gaussian divergence in-plane,resulting in a long and narrow illumination area.We show that metagrating-integrated VCSELs of different kinds can be combined to enable rapid switching between dark-field and total internal reflection illumination.Our approach provides a versatile illumination solution for high-contrast imaging that is compatible with conventional microscopy setups and can be integrated with biophotonics devices,such as portable microscopy,NIR-II range bioimaging,and lab-on-a-chip devices.

The paper considers the problem of representing non-Markovian systems that evolve stochastically over time. It is often necessary to use approximations in the case the system is non-Markovian. Phase type distribution is by now indispensable tool in creation of stochastic system models. The paper suggests a method and software for evaluating stochastic systems approximations by Markov chains with continuous time and countable state space. The performance of a system is described in the event language used for generating the set of states and transition matrix between them. The example of a numerical model is presented.

Plexiform angiomyxoid myofibroblastic tumor(PAMT) is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor of stomach. Rarity of this kind of tumors and scarce review articles may cause underrecognition of this entity and pose a real diagnostic challenge to gastroenterologists, pathologists and surgeons when encountering such patients and differentiating PAMT from other gastric intramural tumors. We report a case of 28-year-old woman, who presented with epigastric pain after meals, iron-deficiency anaemia and weight loss. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed submucosal tumorlike elevated lesion in the anterior wall of the antrum with intact overlying mucosa. Endoscopic ultrasound showed a 3-cm hypoechoic homogenous mass, originating from the third layer of the gastric wall. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration was not informative. Endoscopic buttonhole biopsy was performed to obtain specimens. Following this, the unexpected prolapse of the tumor occurred into the lumen of the stomach, causing gastric outlet obstruction- the biopsy was obtained. Pathomorphological features suggested the diagnosis of PAMT. Gastric resection of the Billroth I type was performed. Diagnosis was confirmed by histological analysis of the surgical specimen.
