Integrating transportation systems management and operations into the project life cycle from planning to construction： A synthesis of best practices

Guided by the federal highway administration （FHWA）, many states are promoting the implementation of transportation systems management and operations （TSM＆O） pro- grams. TSM＆O is traditionally managed by traffic engineers that focus on optimizing ef- ficiency and operations within a particular corridor utilizing common techniques such as re-timings and access modifications. With the emphasis moving towards maximizing current infrastructure, the practice of managing TSM＆O can be applied to all units and disciplines, within a transportation entity, for increased efficiency. One main reason of the stagnated integration is the lack of policies which could support the integration of TSM＆O strategies within the planning or design stages. This paper provides detailed guidance on how to apply TSM＆O strategies from the planning stages to the construction phase of any general transportation project. TSM＆O programs established around the nation are dis- cussed to understand the current initiatives underway and the best practices to create a robust and performance-based program. The developed TSM＆O project cycle process provides a detailed structure for the potential interactions between phases of a project and department staff as a key to ensure that the program achieves the highest level of opti- mization. Continuous evaluation must be undertaken by the agencies to ensure that theperformance of the system is at an optimal level. Developing performance measures, which accurately describe the objectives of the agency, is critical to ensure the plan to be brought to practice.

Thermal energy storage (TES)has the potential to facilitate the deployment of renewable energy through addressing the demand-supply mismatch,ultimately leading to the decarbonisation of heat supply. Among the TES technologies,latent heat based TES with composite phase change materials (PCMs)has shown great potential,which has attracted significant attention in recent ***,large scale and reliable manufacturing methods for composite PCMs are still largely ***,we present a study aimed to develop,for the first time,an extrusion process capable of fabricating high density polyethylene based graphite PCM composites at a high throughput and with enhanced thermal *** PCM composites were fabricated under different extrusion process parameters and characterized for their thermo-physical properties by multiple techniques including differential scanning calorimetry,thermal gravitational analyzer,and Fourier transform infrared *** results show that the extrusion process has the potential to fabricate PCM composite bars in a continuous fashion with a manufacturing throughput higher than traditional method;the fabricated PCM composites show enhanced properties (*** to +70% increase in thermal diffusivity);and there is a clear link between extrusion process parameters and PCMs *** analyses show a more homogeneous structure with a lower extrusion speed;whereas a high extrusion speed gives a more microscopically heterogeneous structure with visible graphite agglomerates distributed relatively homogeneous macroscopically;and a higher graphite content gives a larger agglomerate *** results of this work suggest that the elucidation of composition-process-property relationships is crucial:for a given formulation (composition), only through fine tuning of high throughput manufacturing process can make it possible to achieve the desired performance of the PCM composites.

Evaluate More General Integrals Involving Universal Associated Legendre Polynomials via Taylor's Theorem

Abstract A few important integrals involving the product of two universal associated Legendre polynomials Pl＇m＇, （x）,Pk＇n＇（x）and x2a（1-x2）-p-1,xb（1± x）-p-1and xc（1-x2）-p-1（1 ± x）axe evaluated using the operator form of Taylor＇s theorem and an integral over a single universal associated Legendre polynomial. These integrals are more general since the quantum numbers are unequal, i.e.l＇ ≠ k＇ and m＇≠ n＇ .Their selection rules are a/so given. We also verify the correctness of those integral formulas numerically.

In vivo testing of mucus-permeating nanoparticles for oral insulin delivery using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model under hyperglycemic conditions

The aim was to evaluate the potential of mucus-permeating nanoparticles for the oral administration of *** nanocarriers,based on the coating of zein nanoparticles with a polymer conjugate containing PEG,displayed a size of 260 nm with a negative surface charge and an insulin payload of 77 mg/*** intestinal pig mucus,the diffusivity of these nanoparticles(PPA-NPs)was found to be 20-fold higher than bare nanoparticles(NPs).These results were in line with the biodistribution study in rats,in which NPs remained trapped in the mucus,whereas PPA-NPs were able to cross this layer and reach the epithelium *** therapeutic effcacy was evaluated in Caenorhabditis elegans grown under high glucose *** this model,worms treated with insulin-loaded in PPA-NPs displayed a longer lifespan than those treated with insulin free or nanoencapsulated in *** finding was associated with a signifcant reduction in the formation of reactive oxygen species(ROS)as well as an important decrease in the glucose and fat content in *** effects would be related with the mucus-permeating ability of PPA-NPs that would facilitate the passage through the intestinal peritrophic-like dense layer of worms(similar to mucus)and,thus,the absorption of insulin.

Occult hepatitis B virus(HBV) infection(OBI) is characterized by the persistence of HBV DNA in the liver tissue in individuals negative for the HBV surface *** prevalence of OBI is quite variable depending on the level of endemic disease in different parts of the world,the different assays utilized in the studies,and the different populations *** studies have been carried out on OBI prevalence in different areas of the world and categories of *** studies show that OBI prevalence seems to be higher among subjects at high risk for HBV infection and with liver disease than among individuals at low risk of infection and without liver disease.

西花蓟马(缨翅目)是蓟马类中一种具有代表性的植物害虫,是一种能够对作物生产造成不利影响的多食性物种。因此,在欧盟,这些蓟马物种被作为检疫生物进行管理。西花蓟马以易感植物为食,并会传播几种导致严重植物疾病的病毒,从而对这些植物造成非常大的损害。以色列的供应占欧洲新鲜草本市场的50%,被认为是可食用鲜切花的主要供应市场。然而,在过去的十年中,由于没有可选的处理方法来控制检疫害虫而导致植物检疫失败,大大减少了出口量。目前尚无有效的采后杀虫处理方法。众所周知,熏蒸剂甲基溴(MB)具有植物毒性,尤其是对叶类产品和叶片,且与臭氧层的损耗有关。目前甲基溴仅能用作检疫和装运前熏蒸。甲酸乙酯(EF)被建议作为甲基溴的替代品,药效快、价格低廉、哺乳动物无毒性、环境无害、分解迅速,残留量极少或无残留。在以色列进行的30 g/m^(3)甲酸乙酯与二氧化碳(1∶1.6)混合处理不同花种的实验中,在10和15℃条件下分别处理1和1.5 h,对西花蓟马各虫态均有较好的防治效果。在15℃暴露2 h,可杀死全部害虫,对花或其保质期没有不良影响。因此甲酸乙酯熏蒸可作为一种检疫处理方法,也是甲基溴(MB)的可行替代方法。
