Dynamics along the epithelial-cancer biointerface:Hidden system complexities

The biointerface dynamics influence any cancer spreading through the epithelium since it is documented in the early stages some malignancies(like epithelial cancer).The altered rearrangement of epithelial cells has an impact on the development of ***,it is necessary to comprehend the underlying biological and physical mechanisms of this biointerface dynamics for early suppression of *** the biological mechanisms include cell signaling and gene expression,the physical mechanisms are several physical parameters such as the epithelial-cancer interfacial tension,epithelial surface tension,and compressive stress accumulated within the *** the segregation of epithelia-cancer co-cultured systems was widely investigated,the role of these physical parameters in cell reorganization is still not fully ***,this review is focused on clarifying the role that some physical parameters have during cell reorganization within the epithelial cell clusters and cancer spread within co-cultured *** have applied the developed biophysical model to point out the inter-relations among physical parameters that influence cell reorganization within epithelial-cancer co-cultured *** main results of this theoretical consideration have been assessed by integrating the biophysical model with biological and bio-mechanical experiments from the available *** epithelial-cancer interfacial tension leads to the reduction of the biointerface area,which leads to an increase in the compressive residual stress within the epithelial clusters depending on the viscoelasticity of the epithelial *** stress impacts epithelial rearrangement and the dynamics along the biointerface by influencing the epithelial surface tension and epithelial-cancer interfacial ***,the interrelation between the epithelial surface tension and epithelial-cancer interfacial tension influences the spread of cancer cells.

A key feature that distinguishes cancer cells from all other cells is their capability to spread throughout the *** how cancer cells collectively migrate by following molecular rules which influence the state of cell-cell adhesion contacts has been comprehensively formulated,the impact of physical interactions on cell spreading remains less *** effects of physical interactions exist as the interplay between various physical parameters such as(1)tissue surface tension,(2)viscoelasticity caused by collective cell migration,and(3)solid stress accumulated in the cell aggregate core *** review aims to point out the role of these physical parameters in cancer cell spreading by considering and comparing the rearrangement of various mono-cultured cancer and epithelial model systems such as the fusion of two cell *** epithelial cells undergo volumetric cell rearrangement driven by the tissue surface tension,which directs cell movement from the surface to the core region of two-aggregate systems,cancer cells rather perform surface cell *** cells migrate toward the surface of the two-aggregate system driven by the solid stress while the surface tension is significantly *** solid stress,accumulated in the core region of the two-aggregate system,is capable of suppressing the movement of epithelial cells that can undergo the jamming state transition;however,this stress enhances the movement of cancer *** have focused here on the multi-scale rheological modeling approaches that aimed at reproducing and understanding these biological systems.

A multidimensional examination of performances of HSR (High-Speed Rail) systems

This paper deals with a multidimensional examination of the infrastructural, technical/technological, operational, economic, social, and environmental performances of high-speed rail （HSR） systems, including their overview, analysis of some real-life cases, and limited （analytical） modeling. The infrastructural performances reflect design and geometrical characteristics of the HSR lines and stations. The technical/technological performances relate to the characteristics of rolling stock, i.e., high-speed trains, and supportive facilities and equipment, i.e., the power supply, signaling, and traffic control and management system（s）. The operational performances include the capacity and productivity of HSR lines and rolling stock, and quality of services. The economic per- formances refer to the HSR systems＇ costs, revenues, and their relationship. The social performances relate to the impacts of HSR systems on the society such as congestion, noise, and safety, and their externalities, and the effects in terms of contribution to the local and global/country social- economic development. Finally, the environmental performances of the HSR systems reflect their energy consumption and related emissions of green house gases, land use, and corresponding externalities.

Perforated midgut diverticulitis:Revisited

AIM:To study and provide data on the evolution of medical procedures and outcomes of patients suffering from perforated midgut diverticulitis. METHODS:Three data sources were used:the Medline and Google search engines were searched for case reports on one or more patients treated for perforated midgut diverticulitis (Meckel's diverticulitis excluded) that were published after 1995. The inclusion criterion was sufficient individual patient data in the article. Both indexed and non-indexed journals were used. Patients treated for perforated midgut diverticulitis at Vestfold Hospital were included in this group. Data on symptoms, laboratory and radiology results, treatment modalities, surgical access, procedures, complications and outcomes were collected. The Norwegian patient registry was searched to find patients operated upon for midgut diverticulitis from 1999 to 2007. The data collected were age, sex, mode of access, surgical procedure performed and number of patients per year. Historical controls were retrieved from an article published in 1995 containing pertinent individual patient data. Statistical analysis was done with SPSS ***:GroupⅠ:106 patients (48 men) were found. Mean age was 72.2 ± 13.1 years (mean ± SD). Age or sex had no impact on outcomes (P = 0.057 and P = 0.771, respectively). Preoperative assessment was plain radiography in 53.3% or computed tomography (CT) in 76.1%. Correct diagnosis was made in 77.1% with CT, 5.6% without (P = 0.001). Duration of symptoms before hospitalization was 3.6 d (range:1-35 d), but longer duration was not associated with poor outcome (P = 0.748). Eighty-six point eight percent of patients underwent surgery, 92.4% of these through open access where 90.1% had bowel resection. Complications occurred in 19.2% of patients and 16.3% underwent reoperation. Distance from perforation to Treitz ligament was 41.7 ± 28.1 cm. Wnt/β-catenin signaling in midbrain dopaminergic neuron specification and neurogenesis

Loss of midbrain dopaminergic （mDA） neurons underlies the motor symptoms of Parkinson＇s disease. Towards cell replacement, studies have focused on mechanisms underlying embryonic mDA production, as a rational basis for deriving mDA neurons from stem cells. We will review studies of [3-catenin, an obligate component of the Wnt cascade that is critical to mDA specification and neuro- genesis, mDA neurons have a unique origin--the midbrain fLoor plate （FP）. Unlike the hindbrain and spinal cord FP, the midbrain FP is highly neurogenic and Wnt/β-catenin signaling is critical to this difference in neurogenic potential. In β-catenin loss-of-function experiments, the midbrain FP resembles the hindbrain FP, and key mDA progenitor genes such as Otx2, Lmxlo, MsxJ, and Ngn2 are downregulated whereas Shh is maintained. Accordingly, the neurogenic capacity of the midbrain FP is diminished, resulting in fewer mDA neurons. Conversely, in β-catenin *** experiments, the hindbrain FP expresses key mDA progenitor genes, and is highly neurogenic. Interestingly, when excessive β-catenin is supplied to the midbrain FP, less mDA neurons are produced sug- gesting that the dosage ofWntJ β-catenin signaling is critical. These studies of β-catenin have facilitated new protocols to derive mDA neurons from stem cells.

Flooding as a cause of ungulate mortality in floodplain forests in Croatia

Determination of frequencies of oscillations of cloud cavitation on a 2-D hydrofoil from high-speed camera observations

A method is presented to determine significant frequencies of oscillations of cavitation structures from high-speed camera recordings of a flow around a 2-D hydrofoil. The top view of the suction side of an NACA 2412 hydrofoil is studied in a transparent test section of a cavitation tunnel for selected cloud cavitation regimes with strong oscillations induced by the leading-edge cavity shedding. The ability of the method to accurately determine the dominant oscillation frequencies is confirmed by pressure measure- ments. The method can resolve subtle flow characteristics that are not visible to the naked eye. The method can be used for non- invasive experimental studies of oscillations in cavitating flows with adequate visual access when pressure measurements are not available or when such measurements would disturb the flow.

Intermetallic aluminide compounds possess several potential advantages compared to alloyed steels,like enhanced oxidation resistance,lower density and the omittance of critical raw *** aluminides,compared to other transition metal-aluminides of TM_(3)-Al type,although having a higher density compared to titan-aluminides,have a lower density compared to nickel-aluminides,but also a higher ductility than both alternatives,making this material potentially effective in ballistic protection ***-wise,this material may be a worthy alternative to armour steels,which was the aim of this *** materials,Fe_(3)Al intermetallic compound(F3A-C)and Armox 500 armour steel were ballistically tested against tungsten-carbide(WC)armour-piercing ammunition,in accordance with STANAG *** ballistic testing,microhardness and metallographic testing were performed,revealing differences in strain hardening,crack propagation mode and exit hole morphology.F3A-C ballistic resistance is similar to that of armour steel,in spite of the lower tensile and impact mechanical properties,relying on a considerably higher strain hardening rate,thermal properties and a lower density.
