Ammoniteand bivalve-based biostratigraphy and panboreal correlation of the Volgian Stage

The current ammonite- and buchiid-based biostratigraphical successions of the Volgian Stage are outlined, with an analysis of the most important data that support correlation throughout the panboreal Superrealm. Updated ammonite zonal schemes were proposed for the Volgian of the type region (the Russian platform) and Svalbard. The lower Volgian successions in all areas except the Russian platform, with its eudemic virgatitid lineage and Submediterranean faunal elements, were dominated by pectinatites and Eosphinctoceras-Subdichotomoceras. The last two genera were especially common eastwards from the Ural Mountains. During the middle Volgian, provincialism developed quickly within the ammonites, and unified assemblages with early palvovia and Dorsoplanites at the base of the substage were replaced by numerous local eudemic faunas. Despite this, migrations of species of Crendonites, Laugeites, Epivirgatites Epipallasiceras, Epilaugeites, and Taimyrosphinctes occurred at regular intervals and these enable precise correlations between the faunal sub-provinces. The zonation of the upper Volgian is mainly based upon the succession of Craspedites (on Subcraspedites in England and North Sea), and can be traced throughout the Arctic. Zonation based on the bivalve Buchia enables correlations to be made between the successions over much of the Northern Hemisphere, including Northern California, British Columbia, Arctic areas, and the Russian platform. Each substage of the Volgian is characterized by buchiids with different types of the ontogenetic development. Research on the infrazonal subdivision of the Volgian Stage based on buchiids is currently in progress. Our analyses of the ammonite and buchiid successions of the panboreal Superrealm lead us to conclude that there are no major faunal gaps in Volgian successions of the Russian platform and Northern Siberia.

Young’s modulus of New Red Sandstone was investigated experimentally to gain insight into its nonlinear nature.A large experimental programme was carried out by applying a controllable quasi-static and dynamic uniaxial loading to 286 dry sandstone samples of four different *** static and dynamic tests,similar to those aiming at determining the uniaxial compressive strength,were conducted using the state-of-the-art experimental facilities at the University of Aberdeen including a custom-built small experimental rig for inducing a dynamic uniaxial compressive load via a piezoelectric *** obtained results have confirmed a complex nature of Young’s modulus of ***,under a harmonic dynamic loading,it shows strongly nonlinear behaviour,which is hardening and softening with respect to frequency and amplitude of the dynamic loading,respectively.

Electron correlation effects on exchange interactions and spin excitations in 2D van der Waals materials

Despite serious effort,the nature of the magnetic interactions and the role of electron-correlation effects in magnetic twodimensional(2D)van der Waals materials remains *** CrI3 as a model system,we show that the calculated electronic structure including nonlocal electron correlations yields spin excitations consistent with inelastic neutron-scattering ***,this approach identifies an unreported correlation-enhanced interlayer super-superexchange,which rotates the magnon Dirac lines off,and introduces a gap along the high-symmetryΓ-K-M *** discovery provides a different perspective on the gap-opening mechanism observed in CrI3,which was previously associated with spin–orbit coupling through the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction or Kitaev *** observation elucidates the critical role of electron correlations on the spin ordering and spin dynamics in magnetic van der Waals materials and demonstrates the necessity of explicit treatment of electron correlations in the broad family of 2D magnetic materials.

Siltation and radiocesium pollution of small lakes in different catchment types far from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident site

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident caused radioactive pollution in northeastern Honshu Island,*** study examined the influence of snowmelt and rainfall on soil erosion pro-cesses and siltation of small lakes in Miyagi prefecture(150 km northwest of the power plant).Two sets of slopes and lakes,respectively in pasture and forest catchments,were *** thickness,soil infiltration,surface runoff volume,soil and sediment physicochemical properties,Cs concentration of precipitation,meltwater,and rainwater,and lake siltation rates were *** total radioactive Cs content in precipitation was 0.7-7.4 Bq·L^-1 and was below the Japanese standard(10 Bq·L^-1).Total radioactive Cs was at the allowable level in water flowing down the pasture catchment slope(0.1-9.2 Bq·L^-1)during snowmelt and rainfall,as well as in pasture(0.9-8.8 Bq·L^-1)and forest(0.7-5.2 Bq·L^-1)catchment lake *** was no soil erosion(surface runoff)in the forest *** losses in the pasture catchment were 23 due to rainfall and 9 kg ha^-1 yr^-1 following spring *** snow-melt,a 0.5 and 0.2 mm thick layer of silt was deposited in pasture and forest catchment lakes,respec-tively,and 1.4 and 0.6 mm were deposited during the rainfall *** siltation rates were 1.9 and 0.8 mm·yr^-1 for pasture and forest catchment lakes,*** upper layer of lake bottom sedi-ments is represented mainly by silt fractions(2-50μm),with high organic matter(4.0-5.7%)and radiocesium(1100-1600 kg·ha^-1)contents.

Influence of secondary phases of AlSi9Cu3 alloy on the plasma electrolytic oxidation coating formation process

To understand the formation and growth of plasma electrolytic oxidation(pEO) coatings in presence of different secondary phases in a substrate,pEO treatment was carried out on AlSi9 Cu3 alloy at different treatment times ranging from 15 s to 480 *** coating formation and evolution process was traced by surface and cross-sectional observation of the layers on the different phases of the *** results demonstrated a sequential involvement of the different phases in the plasma discharges:firstly,discharges start on the α-Al matrix,then on the intermetallic Al2 Cu and β-Al5 FeSi phases at the same time and finally on the eutectic *** presence of intermetallic Al2 Cu remarkably affects the initial dissolution,the deposition of conversion products and the ignition of discharges at the early stages of *** Si in the substrate exhibits the highest electrochemical stability at all stages and contributes in the beginning to a distinct coating morphology *** resultant pEO coating tends to be uniform if processing times are longer and a double-layer structure appears in the coating.

Space-surface bistatic synthetic aperture radar with navigation satellite transmissions: a review

This paper reviews the theory and practice of Space-Surface Bistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar(SS-BSAR) using navigation satellites as transmitters. In recent years, this innovative technology has reached a maturity stage which allows it to be considered for a wide range of applications. The paper covers the fundamental aspects of this technology as a radar system, such as the resolution, power budget and point Spread Function(pSF) analysis, as well as its signal processing aspects and the state of the art in terms of advanced SAR techniques that it enables. Finally, the theoretical aspects of the paper may be directly transferred to the more generic SS-BSAR concept.

passive GNSS-based SAR imaging and opportunities using Galileo E5 signals

This paper investigates the feasibility of Galileo navigation satellites as transmitters of opportunity in passive bistatic synthetic aperture radar(SAR) systems from the perspectives of signal processing and experiment program. Experimental images obtained using a single Galileo channel, E5 a or E5 b, are presented and analyzed. The paper also puts forward the channel combination scheme to jointly process E5 a and E5 b channels, which brings up high-resolution possibilities for passive SAR technique. By employing the entire E5 band for imaging, the range resolution may be potentially increased by up to 5 times. preliminary experimental results for this concept are demonstrated.

Decline of Eulia ministrana(Lepidoptera:Tortricidae)in polluted habitats is not accompanied by phenotypic stress responses

Env ironmental pollution is currently identified as one of the major drivers of rapid decline of insect populations,and this finding has revitalized interest in insect responses to *** tested the hypothesis that the pollution-induced decline of insect populations can be predicted from phenotypic stress responses expressed as morphological differences between populations inhabiting polluted and unpolluted *** explored populations of the brassy tortrix Eulia ministrana in subarctic forests along an environmental disturbance gradient created by long-lasting severe impacts of aerial emissions of the copper-nickel smelter in Monchegorsk,northwestern *** used pheromone traps to measure the population densities of this leafrolling moth and to collect specimens for assessment of three morphological stress indices:size,forewing melanization,and fluctuating asymmetry in wing *** length of *** increased by 10%,and neither forewing melanization nor fluctuating asymmetry changed from the unpolluted forest to the heavily polluted industrial ***,the population density of *** decreased 5 to 10 fold in the same pollution ***,none of the studied potential morphological stress indicators signaled vulnerability of *** to environmental pollution and/or to pollution-induced environmental *** conclude that insect populations can decline without any visible signs of *** use of morphological proxies of insect fitness to predict the consequences of human impact on insect populations is therefore risky until causal relationships between these proxies and insect abundance are deciphered.
