During ladle stirring,a gas is injected into the steel bath to generate a mixing of the liquid *** optimal process control requires a reliable measurement of the stirring intensity,for which the induced ladle wall vibrations have proved to be a potential *** experimental cold water ladle with two eccentric nozzles and eight mono-axial accelerometers was thus investigated to measure the *** effect of the sensors'positions with respect to the gas plugs on the vibration intensity was analyzed,and experimental data on several points of the ladle were collected for future numerical *** is shown that the vibration root-mean-square values depend not only on process parameters,such as gas flow rate,water,and oil heights,but also on the radial and axial positions of the *** vibration intensity is clearly higher,close to the gas plumes,than in the opposite *** one of the nozzles is clogged,the vibration intensity close to the clogged nozzle drops drastically(-36 to-59%),while the vibrations close to the normal operating nozzle are hardly *** on these results,guidelines are provided for an optimized vibration-based stirring.

Brown planthopper(BPH) is an insect species that feeds on the vascular system of rice plants. To examine the defence mechanism of rice plants against BPH, the pathogenesis-related genes(PR1a, PR2, PR3, PR4, PR6, PR9, PR10a, PR13, PR15 and PRpha), signaling molecule synthesis genes(AOS, AXR, ACO and LOX), antioxidant-related genes(CAT, TRX, GST and SOD) and lignin biosynthesis-related genes(CHS, CHI and C4H) were investigated in a resistant rice variety. AOS, PR6,PR9 and PR15 genes showed significantly increased relative expression levels at 24.38-, 19.17-, 14.71-, and 12.74-fold compared to the control. Moderate increased relative expression levels of lignin biosynthesis-related gene(C4H), pathogenesis-related genes(PR4, PR10a and PRpha), and antioxidant-related gene(GST) were found, while CHI, LOX, SOD, TRX1 and AXR showed decreased relative expression levels. It was thus clearly shown that wound-induced response genes were activated in rice plants after BPH attacks through AOS activation. Jasmonic acid signaling molecule may activate PR6, PR15, GST and CAT subsequently increasing their expression for H_2O_2 detoxification. PR6 were expressed at the highest relative level among the PR genes. These genes therefore have also a considerable synergistic role with the other genes against BPH by interfered their digestion tract system.

The electronic structure of the strontium aluminate （SrAl2O4：Eu^2＋） materials was studied with a combined experimental and theo- retical approach. The UV-VUV synchrotron radiation was applied in the experimental study while the electronic structure of the non-optimized and optimized crystal structure were investigated theoretically by using the density functional theory. The structure of the valence and conduction bands as well as the band gap energy of the material together with the position of the Eu2＋ 4f7 85712 ground state were calculated. The calculated band gap energy （6.4 eV） agreed well with the experimental value of 6.6 eV. The valence band consisted mainly of oxygen states whereas the bottom of the conduction band of strontium states. In agreement with the experimental results, the calculated 4f7 8S7r2 ground state of Eu2＋ lies in the energy gap of the host. The position of the 4f7 ground state depended on the Coulomb repulsion strength. The position of the 4f7 ground state with respect to the valence and conduction bands was discussed using theoretical and experimental evidence available.

In legume plants, uricase gene （Nodulin-35） plays a positive role in metabolism of ureide and amide compounds in symbiotic nitrogen-fixing in the nodules. In this study, a pot experiment was performed to examine the effects of ammonium application on the transcription of MsU2 gene and distribution of major nitrogen compounds in alfalfa Medicago sativa. Data showed that alfalfa plant has a significant difference in contents of nitrogen compounds in xylem saps compared with soybean plant, and belongs to typical amide type legume plants with little ureide accumulation, and the accumulation of asparagines and ureide in the tissues of alfalfa is mainly gathered in the nodules. Northern blotting showed that excessive ammonium significantly inhibited the transcription of MsU2 gene in the nodules and roots, and mRNA accumulation of MsU2 gene in the plants exposed to excessive ammonium decreased gradually with culture time extension, indicating that application of ammonium significantly inhibited the transcription of MsU2 gene in the alfalfa plants. Although the application of exces- sive ammonium increased the contents of amino acids in various tissues of alfalfa, the accumulation of allantoin reflecting the strength of uricase activity is remarkably reduced in the xylem saps, stems and nodules when alfalfa plants exposed to excessive ammonium, suggesting that application of excessive ammonium generated a negative effect on symbiosis fixing-nitrogen system due to inhibition of ammonium ion on uricase activity in the nodules of alfalfa. This result seems to imply that application of excessive ammonium in legume plants should not be proposed to avoid affecting the ability of fixing nitrogen in the nodules of legume plants, and reasonable dose of ammonium should be recommended to effectively utilize the fixed N from atmosphere in legume plant production.

The pre-calling behavior of female adults of the common cutworm, Spodoptera litura （Lepidoptera： Noctuidae） collected in southern Japan and southeastern Asian countries was investigated. Most females started calling on days 1-4 after adult emergence. In three populations obtained in Saga prefecture in Kyushu mainland, Japan, two different patterns of pre-calling period （PCP） were observed： one was the above-mentioned pattern shown by most individuals, and the other was a pattern in which females sexually matured within several hours after emergence. Diel periodicity was shown in the time of calling activity, and its pattern varied among the populations. Pre-calling period was stable over successive generations in the laboratory.

Seasonally cold climate and resulting frost action set great demands to railway track substructure in order to maintain Irack geomelry. Chal- lenges culminate on high-speed lines, where the tolerances for roughness are the tightest. Problems may result in highly increased Irack maintenance and need for temporary speed reslrictions. The causes of frost action can be associated with subsoil, subballast or ballast. The major concern in frost protection is to avoid the freezing of frost susceptible subsoil by using sufficient thickness of subballast and relying on non-fi＇ost-susctible subballast material. This paper provides an overview of the main research findings on the role of ballast, subballast and subsoil in frost acedon. In new comlruclion the material specificalions, design procedures and construction methods have been developed to ensure adequate performance of Irack subscatt, but special challenges exist in managing existing Wacks that were not designed for modem requirements. In order to perform cost-effective and sustainable track maintenance, it is necessary to recognize the problem areas and define the root-causes of problems. For locating the problem sections and defining the causes of defects, a sophisticated analysis based on integration of track geometry and ground penetrating radar （GPR） data has been developed and is summarized in this paper,
