Analysis of normal human retinal vascular network architecture using multifractal geometry

AIM：To apply the multifractal analysis method as a quantitative approach to a comprehensive description of the microvascular network architecture of the normal human ***：Fifty volunteers were enrolled in this study in the Ophthalmological Clinic of Cluj-Napoca,Romania,between January 2012 and January 2014. A set of 100 segmented and skeletonised human retinal images,corresponding to normal states of the retina were studied. An automatic unsupervised method for retinal vessel segmentation was applied before multifractal analysis. The multifractal analysis of digital retinal images was made with computer algorithms,applying the standard boxcounting method. Statistical analyses were performed using the Graph Pad In Stat ***：The architecture of normal human retinal microvascular network was able to be described using the multifractal geometry. The average of generalized dimensions（D_q）for q=0,1,2,the width of the multifractal spectrum（Δα=α_（max）-α_（min））and the spectrum arms＇ heights difference（│Δf│）of the normal images were expressed as mean±standard deviation（SD）：for segmented versions,D_0=1.7014±0.0057; D_1=1.6507±0.0058; D_2=1.5772±0.0059; Δα=0.92441±0.0085; │Δf│= 0.1453±0.0051; for skeletonised versions,D_0=1.6303±0.0051; D_1=1.6012±0.0059; D_2=1.5531± 0.0058; Δα=0.65032±0.0162; │Δf│= 0.0238±0.0161. The average of generalized dimensions（D_q）for q=0,1,2,the width of the multifractal spectrum（Δα）and the spectrum arms＇ heights difference（│Δf│）of the segmented versions was slightly greater than the skeletonised ***：The multifractal analysis of fundus photographs may be used as a quantitative parameter for the evaluation of the complex three-dimensional structure of the retinal microvasculature as a potential marker for early detection of topological changes associated with retinal diseases.

There are two main approaches when discussing living green walls:an ecological one and an artistic *** thinking mainly considers environmental aspects,comfort enhancement and energy consumption and oversees human interaction and actual proximity to *** opposition,art or architecture installations that involve vegetation,lack technical and ecological aspects,aiming to raise awareness on environmental issues using human interaction either physically(direct)or emotionally(indirect).The present paper aims to analyze methods of combining the two directions,in a functional,ecological,yet aesthetically pleasing *** order to further develop previous experiences gathered by the team members,authors of this article,a green installation concept made out of interactive modular systems unites all the knowledge into a new,living,moving,dynamic,interactive structure whose inspiration is taken from nature while using biomimicry as main principle for its *** new concept responds and is influenced by both external,natural stimuli and by the human *** is a key element in developing this project,involving architecture,art,interior and landscape design,botany,geometry,mechanical and electrical engineering,leading towards new research directions and innovative approaches in greenery-interior environment connections.

Understanding satellite images:a data mining module for Sentinel images

The increased number of free and open Sentinel satellite images has led to new applications of these *** them is the systematic classification of land cover/use types based on patterns of settlements or agriculture recorded by these images,in particular,the identification and quantification of their temporal *** this paper,we will present guidelines and practical examples of how to obtain rapid and reliable image patch labelling results and their validation based on data mining techniques for detecting these temporal changes,and presenting these as classification maps and/or statistical *** represents a new systematic validation approach for semantic image content *** will focus on a number of different scenarios proposed by the user community using Sentinel *** a large number of potential use cases,we selected three main cases,namely forest monitoring,flood monitoring,and macro-economics/urban monitoring.

A data-driven framework is presented for building magneto-elastic machine-learning interatomic potentials(ML-IAPs)for largescale spin-lattice dynamics *** magneto-elastic ML-IAPs are constructed by coupling a collective atomic spin model with an *** they represent a potential energy surface from which the mechanical forces on the atoms and the precession dynamics of the atomic spins are *** the atomic spin model and the ML-IAP are parametrized on data from first-principles *** demonstrate the efficacy of our data-driven framework across magneto-structural phase transitions by generating a magneto-elastic ML-IAP forα-*** combined potential energy surface yields excellent agreement with firstprinciples magneto-elastic calculations and quantitative predictions of diverse materials properties including bulk modulus,magnetization,and specific heat across the ferromagnetic–paramagnetic phase transition.

Eye tracking can facilitate understanding irrational decision-making in contexts such as financial *** this purpose,we develop an experimental framework in which participants trade a risky asset in a simulated bubble market to maximize individual returns while their eye movements are *** are sensitive to eye movement dynamics,depending on the presented visual *** eye-tracking data,we investigated the effects of arousal,attention,and disengagement on individual payoffs using linear and nonlinear *** estimating a nonlinear model using attention as a threshold variable,our results suggest that arousal positively influences trading returns,but its effect becomes smaller when attention exceeds a certain threshold,whereas disengagement has a higher negative impact on reduced attention levels and becomes almost irrelevant when attention ***,we provide a neurobehavioral metric as a function of attention that predicts financial gains in boomand-bust *** study serves as a proof-of-concept for developing future psychometric measures to enhance decision-making.

The IRIS Development Platform and Proposed Object-Oriented Data Base

Various code development platforms, such as the ATHENA Framework [1] of the ATLAS [2] experiment encounter lengthy compilation/linking times. To augment this situation, the IRIS Development Platform was built as a software development framework acting as compiler, cross-project linker and data fetcher, which allow hot-swaps in order to compare various versions of software under test. The flexibility fostered by IRIS allowed modular exchange of software libraries among developers, making it a powerful development tool. The IRIS platform used input data ROOT-ntuples [3];however a new data model is sought, in line with the facilities offered by IRIS. The schematic of a possible new data structuring—as a user implemented object oriented data base, is presented.

Throughout the years,various Earth Observation(EO)satellites have generated huge amounts of *** extraction of latent information in the data repositories is not a trivial *** methodologies and tools,being capable of handling the size,complexity and variety of data,are *** scientists require support for the data manipulation,labeling and information extraction *** paper presents our Earth Observation Image Librarian(EOLib),a modular software framework which offers innovative image data mining capabilities for TerraSAR-X and EO image data,in *** main goal of EOLib is to reduce the time needed to bring information to end-users from Payload Ground Segments(PGS).EOLib is composed of several modules which offer functionalities such as data ingestion,feature extraction from SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar)data,meta-data extraction,semantic definition of the image content through machine learning and data mining methods,advanced querying of the image archives based on content,meta-data and semantic categories,as well as 3-D visualization of the processed *** is operated by DLR’s(German Aerospace Center’s)Multi-Mission Payload Ground Segment of its Remote Sensing Data Center at Oberpfaffenhofen,Germany.

Autophagy in colorectal cancer:An important switch from physiology to pathology

Colorectal cancer(CRC) remains a leading cause of cancer death in both men and women *** the factors and mechanisms that are involved in the multifactorial etiology of CRC,autophagy is an important transformational switch that occurs when a cell shifts from normal to *** recent years,multiple hypotheses have been considered regarding the autophagy mechanisms that are involved in *** currently accepted hypothesis is that autophagy has dual and contradictory roles in carcinogenesis,but the precise mechanisms leading to autophagy in cancer are not yet fully defined and seem to be context *** is a surveillance mechanism used by normal cells that protects them from the transformation to malignancy by removing damaged organelles and aggregated proteins and by reducing reactive oxygen species,mitochondrial abnormalities and DNA ***,autophagy also supports tumor formation by promoting access to nutrients that are critical to the metabolism and growth of tumor cells and by inhibiting cellular death and increasing drug *** studies in CRC have focused on several molecules,mainly microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3,beclin 1,and autophagy related 5,with conflicting *** effects were observed for some agents that modulate autophagy in CRC either alone or,more often,in combination with other *** extensive studies are needed in the future to clarify the roles of autophagy-related genes and modulators in colorectal carcinogenesis,and to develop potential beneficial agents for the prognosis and treatment of CRC.
