Dynamic in-plane transversal normal stresses in the concrete face of CFRD

Severe earthquakes can induce damages to Concrete Face Rocldill Dams (CFRDs)such as concrete cracking and joint's water stops distressing where high in-plane transversal normal stresses *** these damages rarely jeopardize the dam safety,they cause large water reservoir leakages that hinder the dam *** issue can be addressed using well know numerical methods;however,given the wide range of parameters involved,it would seem appropriate to develop a simple yet reliable procedure to get a close understanding how their interaction affects the CFRD's overall ***,once the physics of the problem is better understood one can proceed to perform a detailed design of the various components of the *** this end an easy-to-use procedure that accounts for the dam height effects,valley narrowness,valley slopes,width of concrete slabs and seismic excitation characteristics was *** procedure is the dynamic complement of a method recently developed to evaluate in-plane transversal normal stresses in the concrete face of CFRD's due to dam reservoir filling [1].Using these two procedures in a sequential manner,it is possible to define the concrete slab in-plane normal stresses induced by the reservoir filling and the action of orthogonal horizontal seismic excitations acting at the same time upstream-downstream and cross *** procedures were developed from a data base generated using nonlinear static and dynamic three-dimensional numerical analyses on the same group of CFRD'***,the results were interpreted with the Buckingham pi theorem and various relationships were *** the above reference,the method to evaluate the concrete face in-plane transversal normal stresses caused by the first reservoir filling was *** this paper,the seismic procedure is first developed and then through an example the whole method (dam construction,reservoir filling plus seismic loading)of analysis is assessed.

Corneal and intraocular pressure changes associated to the circadian rhythms:a narrative review

Spinal cord injury(SCI)is a devastating and disabling medical condition generally caused by a traumatic event(primary injury).This initial trauma is accompanied by a set of biological mechanisms directed to ameliorate neural damage but also exacerbate initial damage(secondary injury).The alterations that occur in the spinal cord have not only local but also systemic consequences and virtually all organs and tissues of the body incur important changes after SCI,explaining the progression and detrimental consequences related to this ***(pNIE)is a growing area of research aiming to integrate and explore the interactions among the different systems that compose the human organism,considering the mind and the body as a *** initial traumatic event and the consequent neurological disruption trigger immune,endocrine,and multisystem dysfunction,which in turn affect the patient's psyche and *** the present review,we will explore the most important local and systemic consequences of SCI from a pNIE perspective,defining the changes occurring in each system and how all these mechanisms are ***,potential clinical approaches derived from this knowledge will also be collectively presented with the aim to develop integrative therapies to maximize the clinical management of these patients.

In-plane transversal normal stresses in the concrete face of CFRD induced by the first-dam reservoir filling

To evaluate the effects of dam height, valley narrowness and width of concrete slabs on the first-dam reservoir filling in-plane transversal normal stresses in the concrete face of CFRD＇s, 3D finite difference analyses were carried out. Behavior of rockfiU dams considered in this study was defined from the monitoring of a number of 3D sets of pressure cells and extensometers installed in three large dams in Mexico. The 3D analyses results show that high in-plane transversal compressive stresses develop within the concrete panels located in the central concrete face zone upon dam reservoir filling loading. Likewise, in-plane induced tensile transversal stresses in the zones near the abutments increase the potential of slabs cracking and damaging the waterstops in-between the vertical and perimetral joints. From the results of the 3D finite difference analyses, a simple method to estimate in-plane normal stresses in the concrete face is advanced and through comparisons with the results of a 3D case numerical study, its accuracy assessed.

Effect of organic mineral supplementation in reducing oxidative stress in Holstein calves during short‑term heat stress and recovery conditions

Background This study investigated the effects of inorganic and organic minerals on physiological responses,oxidative stress reduction,and rumen microbiota in Holstein bull calves(123.81±9.76 kg;5 months old)during short-term heat stress(HS)and recovery *** Holstein calves were randomly assigned to four treatment groups:no mineral supplementation(Con),inorganic minerals(IM),organic minerals(OM),and high-concentration organic minerals(HOM)and two thermal environments(HS and recovery)using 4×2 factorial arrangement in a crossover design of four periods of 35 *** were maintained in a temperature-controlled *** experimental period consisted of 14 d of HS,14 d of recovery condititon,and a 7-d washing *** Body temperature and respiration rate were higher in HS than in the recovery conditions(ppplemented calves in both HS(90.38μg/dL)and recovery periods(102.00μg/dL)(pperiod,the serum cortisol was 20.26 ng/mL in the HOM group,which was 5.60 ng/mL lower than in the control group(pp(2.71 mmol Trolox equivalent/L),followed by the HOM group during HS,whereas it was highest in the HOM group(2.58 mmol Trolox equivalent/L)during the recovery period(pplasma malondialdehyde and HSp70 levels were decreased by HOM supplementation during the HS and recovery periods,whereas SOD and GpX levels were not significantly affected(p>0.05).The principal coordinate analysis represented that the overall rumen microbiota was not influenced by mineral supplementation;however,temperature-induced microbial structure shifts were indicated(pERMANOVA:pphylum level,Firmicutes and Actinobacteria decreased,whereas Fibrobacteres,Spirochaetes,and Tenericutes increased(pponema increased under HS conditions,while Christensenella was higher in recovery conditions(p<0.05).Conc

Assessment of an alternative to deep foundations in compressible clays： the structural cell foundation

The new type of deep foundation for buildings on saturated, compressible-low strength clayey soil deposits, branded structural cell essentially consists of a rigid concrete top slab, structurally connected to reinforced concrete peripheral walls （diaphragms） that enclose the natural soil. Accordingly, as the initial volume of the confined soft clays within the lateral stiff diaphragms will remain constant upon loading, the hollowed structural cell will be ＂transformed＂ into a very large cross-section pillar of unit weight slightly higher than that of the natural soft clayey soil. This type of foundation seems to be a highly competitive alternative to the friction pile-box foundations （widely used in Mexico City clays）, due to its economic and environmental advantages. Economies result, for example, from the absence of huge excavations hence sparing the need of earth retaining structures. Further savings result from appreciably smaller concrete volumes required for building the structural cell than the friction pile-box foundation; moreover, the construction time of the former is much shorter than that of the latter. Regarding the impact to the environment, less air contamination follows from the fact that both traffic jams and soil excavation lessen appreciably. Considering these facts and others regarding scheduling, it was decided to replace 48-friction pile-box foundations specified in the master plan project by this new type of foundation. The overall behavior of these cell foundations over a five-year period is fared from close visual observations and their leveling during the first three years after their construction.

We present a comprehensive catalog with an updated database of the fossil record of Diplopoda in the *** data was collected from descriptions and reports published from 1854 to the *** also include new records from Mexican amber(Upper Oligocene-Lower Miocene),counting 83 unknown fossil inclusions,with the first records of the orders polyxenida,platydesmida,and Julida,as well as the families Sphaeriodesmidae and Trichopolydesmidae within *** to our results,Diplopoda counts 413 records featuring 299 distinct taxa ranging from the Middle Silurian to the Upper pleistocene,representing three subclasses,two subterclasses,six superorders,25 orders,15 superfamilies,55 families,93 genera,and 161 fossil *** date,no fossils of the order Siphonocryptida have been *** fossil record extends over three geological eras:the paleozoic,with 161 taxa,including 97 species;the Mesozoic,with 53 taxa and 22 species;and the Cenozoic,with 85 taxa and 42 *** referred material shows different forms of fossil *** comprises 123 impressions,99 compressions,26 ichnites,predominantly from paleozoic and Mesozoic sediments,and 165 amber inclusions from late Mesozoic and Cenozoic ***,this catalog allows us to estimate the size and taxonomic composition of Diplopoda in the fossil record worldwide.
