Prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection and intestinal metaplasia in subjects who had undergone surgery for gastric adenocarcinoma in Northwest Italy

AIM： To investigate the seroprevalence of Helicobacter pylori （Hpylori） infection and its more virulent strains as well as the correlation with the histologic features among patients who had undergone surgery for gastric cancer （GC）. METHODS： Samples from 317 （184 males, 133 females, mean age 69±3.4 years） consecutive patientswho had undergone surgery for gastric non-cardia adenocarcinoma were included in the study. Five hundred and fifty-five （294 males, 261 females, mean age 57.3±4.1 years） patients consecutively admitted to the Emergency Care Unit served as control. Histological examination of tumor, lymph nodes and other tissues obtained at the time of surgery represented the diagnostic ＂gold standard＇： An enzyme immunosorbent assay was used to detect serum anti-H pylori （IgG） antibodies and Western blotting technique was utilized to search for anti-CagA protein （IgG）. RESULTS： Two hundred and sixty-one of three hundred and seventeen （82.3%） GC patients and 314/555 （56.5%） controls were seropositive for anti-H pylori （P〈0.0001; OR, 3.58; 95%CI, 2.53-5.07）. Out of the 317 cases, 267 （84.2%） were seropositive for anti-CagA antibody vs 100 out of 555 （18%） controls （P〈0.0001; OR, 24.30; 95%CI, 16.5-35.9）. There was no difference between the frequency of H pylori in intestinal type carcinoma （76.2%） and diffuse type cancer （78.8%）. Intestinal metaplasia （IM） was more frequent but not significant in the intestinal type cancer （83.4% vs 75.2% in diffuse type and 72.5% in mixed type）. Among the patients examined for IM, 39.8% had IM type Ⅰ, 8.3% type Ⅱ and 51.9% type Ⅲ （type IU vs others, P = 0.4）. CONCLUSION： This study confirms a high seroprevalence of H pylori infection in patients suffering from gastric adenocarcinoma and provides further evidence that searching for CagA status over H pylori infection might confer additional benefit in identifying populations at greater risk for this tumor.

The potential for the positive manipulation of the gut microbiome through the introduction of beneficial microbes, as also known as probiotics, is currently an active area of investigation. The FAO/WHO define probiotics as live microorganisms that confer a health benefit to the host when administered in adequate amounts. However, dead bacteria and bacterial molecular components may also exhibit probiotic properties. The results of clinical studies have demonstrated the clinical potential of probiotics in many pathologies, such as allergic diseases, diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease and viral infection. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the beneficial effects of probiotics, most of which involve gene expression regulation in specific tissues, particularly the intestine and liver. Therefore, the modulation of gene expression mediated by probiotics is an important issue that warrants further investigation. In the present paper, we performed a systematic review of the probiotic-mediated modulation of gene expression that is associated with the immune system and inflammation. Between January 1990 to February 2014, PubMed was searched for articles that were published in English using the MeSH terms “probiotics' and 'gene expression' combined with “intestines', 'liver', 'enterocytes', 'antigen-presenting cells', 'dendritic cells', 'immune system', and 'inflammation'. Two hundred and five original articles matching these criteria were initially selected, although only those articles that included specific gene expression results (77) were later considered for this review and separated into three major topics: the regulation of immunity and inflammatory gene expression in the gut, in inflammatory diseases of the gut and in the liver. Particular strains of Bifidobacteria, Lactobacilli, Escherichia coli, Propionibacterium, Bacillus and Saccharomyces influence the gene expression of mucins, Toll-like receptors, caspases, nuclear factor-κ

Background and purpose An analysis of the ASTER 2 trial revealed similar final recanalisation levels and clinical outcomes in acute large vessel occlusion(LVO)stroke between stent retrieval(SR)alone as a first-line mechanical thrombectomy(MT)technique(SR alone first-line)and concomitant use of contact aspiration(CA)plus SR as a first-line MT technique(SR+CA first-line).The purpose of the present study was to compare the safety and efficacy of SR+CA first-line with those of SR alone first-line for patients with LVO in *** We conducted the present study by using the data from the angel-ACT *** divided the selected patients into SR+CA first-line and SR alone first-line *** performed logistic regression and generalised linear models with adjustments to compare the angiographic and clinical outcomes,including successful/complete recanalisation after the first technique alone and all procedures,first-pass successful/complete recanalisation,number of passes,90-day modified Rankin Scale,procedure duration,rescue treatment and intracranial haemorrhage within 24 *** Of the 1233 enrolled patients,1069(86.7%)received SR alone first-line,and 164(13.3%)received SR+CA ***+CA first-line was associated with more thrombectomy passes(3(2-4)vs 2(1-2);β=1.77,95%CI=1.55 to 1.99,p0.05)between the two *** Patients undergoing SR+CA first-line had more thrombectomy passes and longer procedure duration than patients undergoing SR alone ***,we suggested that SR+CA first-line was not superior to SR alone first-line in final recanalisation level,first-pass recanalisation level and 90-day clinical outcomes in the Chinese population.

A Comparative Study of Non-Volatile Compounds Present in 3R4F Cigarettes and iQOS Heatsticks Utilizing GC-MS

It is now widely suggested that people who are dependent on nicotine should switch from ordinary tobacco smoking to alternative products, which at least reduce the overall harm from smoking. A number of alternatives are now popular, including electronic cigarettes and heatsticks. In this work comparative analysis of the smoke/aerosol emission from 3R4F standard cigarettes and iQOS heatsticks was undertaken. For this, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis was applied, to measure the non-volatile compounds of smoke/aerosol emission from individual samples, with the specific aim to determine their content of nicotine and selected other main components. All measurement data were collected under the Health Canada Intense (HCI) puffing regime. The most relevant findings of the present investigation can be summarized as follows. First, the number of measured aerosol components in the iQOS samples, with respect to those of 3R4F samples, was significantly lower (notably 37 versus 12 components). Second, the analysis of the iQOS and 3R4F GC-MS chromatographic fingerprints indicated a non-nicotine global component reduction (number and areas excluding nicotine) of larger than 80% for the iQOS samples in comparison to 3R4F samples. Third, the nicotine content of the iQOS aerosol was less than half that contained in the 3R4F smoke. The results from the present investigation indicate that—except for nicotine—smokers are exposed to a largely reduced number and amount of non-volatile, non-nicotine components in the iQOS heatstick aerosol, in comparison to those in the 3R4F cigarette smoke.

In this work, the synthesis of undoped and Tm-doped ZnS nanoparticles is successfully carried out by the polyol method. From XRD analyses, it was confirmed that both types of particles possess the cubic zinc blend structure of the ZnS, and that the structure is not altered by doping. The crystallite size computed by the Scherrer equation is about 9 ± 1 nm. From photoluminescence analyses, the results show that the excitation spectrum has two excitation peaks at 304 nm and 356 nm;by exciting at 304 nm, a strong blue emission is observed at 420 nm, while exciting at 356 nm the characteristic Tm transition 1G4 → 3H6 is observed at 417 nm. By doping with Tm ions, the emission color changes from pure blue to sky according to the change in CIE coordinates from x = 0.15, y = 0.015 to x = 0.18, y = 0.17, respectively.

AIM:To investigate the role of epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR) in colitis-associated dysplasia using the EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor ***:Sprague-Dawley rats received trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid(TNBS;30 mg in 50% ethanol,ic),followed 6 wk later by reactivation with TNBS(5 mg/kg,iv) for 3 *** induce colitis-associated dysplasia,rats then received TNBS(iv) twice a week for 10 *** group received erlotinib(10 mg/kg,ip) for 1 wk before the start of the reactivation of the colitis and 2 wk after(21 d);the rest received the *** rats were euthanized,the colons were removed and analyzed for damage and expression of the EGFR downstream effectors Erk1/2 and ***:Ninety percent of the vehicle-treated animals had dysplasia in any region of the ***-treated animals had a significant decrease in the incidence of dysplasia compared to vehicle-treated animals in all regions of the colon(50.00% ± 11.47% vs 90.00% ± 10.00% in proximal,P < 0.05;15.00% ± 8.19% vs 50.00% ± 16.67% in mid,P < 0.05;and 20.00% ± 9.17% vs 70.00% ± 15.28% in distal,P < 0.01).Erlotinib-treated animals also had reduced cell proliferation,reduced active Erk1/2,and reduced c-Myc in colon epithelium compared with the vehicle-treated *** vitro,erlotinib treatment was shown to markedly decrease c-Myc and pErk1/2 levels in rat epithelial *** of rat epithelial cells was stimulated by epidermal growth factor and inhibited by erlotinib(P < 0.05).CONCLUSION:Erlotinib can decrease the development of colitis-associated dysplasia,suggesting a potential therapeutic use for erlotinib in patients with long-standing colitis.
