Long-Term Postoperative Perfusion Indices in Surgically Resolved Myopic Traction Maculopathy

Background: Pathological myopia can be complicated by the presence of posterior staphyloma, macular atrophy, ruptures in Bruch’s membrane, pathologic choroidal neovascularization, and different degrees of myopic traction maculopathy. Purpose: To report the structural, functional and perfusional outcomes in patients underwent surgery for different stages of myopic traction maculopathy (MTM). Methods: A retrospective, consecutive, comparative, interventional, one-surgeon, case-control study was conducted in 46 eyes of 34 individuals between April 2015 and May 2021. Participants included normal emmetropic eyes (Control emmetropia, n = 25), healthy myopic eyes (Control high myopia, n = 20), and operated and structurally fully resolved myopic eyes with different stages of MTM (Surgically treated group, n = 46). Long-term postoperative functional and perfusional follow-up evaluations were performed with spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and OCT angiography. The primary outcome measure included long-term functional, structural and perfusion macular status across groups. Results: Forty-six eyes in 34 patients were included in the study group, with both eyes affected in 12 (26.3%) patients. The mean axial length was 29.89 ± 1.67 mm. The preoperative logMAR was 1.29 ± 0.54 and the postoperative logMAR was 0.60 ± 0.52 (P Conclusion: Compared to emmetropic and healthy myopic eyes, surgically-resolved MTM eyes generally have larger superficial foveal avascular zone area, lower vessel density, smaller choriocapillaris flow area, thinner central subfoveal thickness, and more macular defects. Eyes with stage III or IV MTM had larger deviation compared to eyes at earlier stages. Visual function change after surgery was associated with superficial foveal avascular zone area. Better functional, structural and perfusion index outcomes were observed when highly myopic eyes underwent early surgery.

Quercetin prevents spinal motor neuron degeneration induced by chronic excitotoxic stimulus by a sirtuin 1-dependent mechanism

Background:Excitotoxicity is a mechanism of foremost importance in the selective motor neuron degeneration characteristic of motor neuron *** therapeutic strategies are an unmet need for these ***,such as quercetin and resveratrol,are plant-derived compounds that activate sirtuins(SIRTs)and have shown promising results in some models of neuronal death,although their effects have been scarcely tested in models of motor neuron ***:In this work we investigated the effects of quercetin and resveratrol in an in vivo model of excitotoxic motor neuron death induced by the chronic infusion ofα-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid(AMPA)into the rat spinal cord *** and resveratrol were co-infused with AMPA and motor behavior and muscle strength were assessed daily for up to ten ***,animals were fixed and lumbar spinal cord tissue was analyzed by histological and immunocytological ***:We found that the chronic infusion of AMPA[1 mM]caused a progressive motor neuron degeneration,accompanied by astrogliosis and microgliosis,and motor deficits and paralysis of the rear *** infusion ameliorated AMPA-induced paralysis,rescued motor neurons,and prevented both astrogliosis and microgliosis,and these protective effects were prevented by EX527,a very selective SIRT1 *** contrast,neither resveratrol nor EX527 alone improved motor behavior deficits or reduced motor neuron degeneration,albeit both reduced ***:These results suggest that quercetin exerts its beneficial effects through a SIRT1-mediated mechanism,and thus SIRT1 plays an important role in excitotoxic neurodegeneration and therefore its pharmacological modulation might provide opportunities for therapy in motor neuron disorders.

Measurement of Anomalous Radon Gas Emanation Across the Yammouneh Fault in Southern Lebanon: A Possible Approach to Earthquake Prediction

The eastern Mediterranean region is an active tectonic setting that includes the Dead Sea Transform Fault, which forms the boundary between the African and the Arabian Plates and crosses Lebanon from south to north, striking in a restraining bend around 25–30°NE. The major structural feature in Lebanon is the Yammouneh Fault, which reaches to Syria and southern Turkey in a north–south direction. Measurements of radon gas concentration and exhalation rates in two locations along the southern segment of the Yammouneh Fault in south Lebanon were performed. Two profiles in the El-Khiam basin and Blat pull-apart basin and perpendicular to the Yammouneh Fault trace were analyzed. An approximate fault width 25–30 m wide was determined in the El-Khiam study area. Temporal increase of radon concentration was measured and correlated with stress/strain tectonic activity and stress drops along the studied fault segment *** variable radon concentrations were detected during one of the measurements where an earthquake occurred in the region of Tiberias Lake in northern Palestine along the Yammouneh Fault in the study area. Measurements of radon concentration along a station’s profile in Blat village did not show any radon anomalous variation due to the discontinuity along the fault(pull-apart), and possible absence of stress and energy accumulation along the Yammouneh Fault line in that location.

Morphological control of cadmium sulfide nanostructures by electrophoretic deposition

Thin films and one-dimensional CdS nanostructures were formed by electrophoretic deposition of nanoparticles with morphological control, Particles less than 1Ohm in diameter were prepared by a microwave assisted synthesis using trisodium citrate as capping agent. The particles were character- ized by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, dynamic light scattering, and X-ray diffraction. Nanoparticles in the resulting aqueous dispersion were electrodeposited without any further treatment on aluminum plates. The nanostructures consisted of thin films with surface roughness being tuned with the applied voltage. One-dimensional nanostructures were formed by varying the applied voltage and by changing the molar ratio of the precursors in the nanocrystal synthesis. These results illustrate two different mechanisms of electrophoretic deposition that lead to the formation of different nanostructures,

Stability of Spike Solutions to the Fractional Gierer-Meinhardt System in a One-Dimensional Domain

In this paper we consider the existence and stability of multi-spike solutions to the fractional Gierer-Meinhardt model with periodic boundary *** particular we rigorously prove the existence of symmetric and asymmetric twospike solutions using a Lyapunov-Schmidt *** linear stability of these two-spike solutions is then rigorously analyzed and found to be determined by the eigenvalues of a certain 2×2 *** rigorous results are complemented by formal calculations of N-spike solutions using the method of matched asymptotic *** addition,we explicitly consider examples of one-and two-spike solutions for which we numerically calculate their relevant existence and stability *** considering a one-spike solution we determine that the introduction of fractional diffusion for the activator or inhibitor will respectively destabilize or stabilize a single spike solution with respect to oscillatory ***,when considering two-spike solutions we find that the range of parameter values for which asymmetric two-spike solutions exist and for which symmetric two-spike solutions are stable with respect to competition instabilities is expanded with the introduction of fractional inhibitor *** our calculations indicate that asymmetric two-spike solutions are always linearly unstable.

Importance of Modeling Heterogeneities and Correlation in Reservoir Properties in Unconventional Formations: Examples of Tight Gas Reservoirs

We present lithofacies classifications for a tight gas sandstone reservoir by analyzing hierarchies of *** use principal component analysis(PCA)to overcome the two level of heterogeneities,which results in a better lithofacies classification than the traditional cutoff *** classical volumetric method is used for estimating oil/gas in-place resources in the petroleum industry since its inception is not accurate because it ignores the heterogeneities of and correlation between the petrophysical *** present the importance and methods of accounting for the heterogeneities of and correlation between petrophysical properties for more accurate hydrocarbon volumetric *** also demonstrate the impacts of modeling the heterogeneities and correlation in porosity and hydrocarbon saturation for hydrocarbon volumetric estimations with a tight sandstone gas ***,geoscientists have traditionally considered that small-scale heterogeneities only impact subsurface fluid flow,but not impact the hydrocarbon resource volumetric *** show the importance of modeling small-scale heterogeneities using fine cell size in reservoir modeling of unconventional resources for accurate resource assessment.

Risk Groups and Mortality in Patients with SARS-CoV-2 from Family Medicine Unit No. 43 in Southeastern Mexico

SARS-CoV-2 infection is a viral disease that causes respiratory infections that can cause multiple complications. Patients with adjacent morbidities have a higher chance of complications and mortality. The National Health and Nutrition Survey (ENSANUT) in 2018 reported that in Mexico, 75.2% of adults aged 20 years and over are overweight and obese, both situations are closely related to the cases reported as severe COVID and even with a higher risk of mortality. The main objective was to evaluate the risk and mortality groups in patients with SARS-CoV-2 from family medicine in the south of México. The study was carried out during the 2020 year, in the Family Medicine Unit No. 43 of Villahermosa, Tabasco, a cross-sectional, retrospective investigation was carried out with an analytical approach, and the sample was obtained using the formula of n for infinite populations that correspond to 215, patients were included who met the selection criteria;3 groups were integrated: DM2, HAS and obesity. Descriptive statistics andχ2 formula were used, using the SPSS version 25 Windows program. The female gender presented the highest number of infections 122 (56.7%) and mortality: 5 (2.32%), obesity comorbidity presented the highest number of infections: 194 (90.2%), HAS: 153 (71.2%), and MD: 44 (20.46%). Complications were observed in 23 (10.69%), distributed in: SIRA: 7 (3.3%), multiple organ failure: 6 (2.8%), heart failure: 6 (2.8%) and pneumonia 4 (1.9%). The observed mortality was 8 (3.72%). The comorbidities of patients with the highest mortality were: SAH: 6 (75%) (χ2 = 9.169;df = 1;p = 0.010) and obesity: 6 (75%) (χ2 = 9.169;df = 1;p = 0.010). The group with the highest risk for SARS-CoV-2 was patients with overweight/obesity comorbidities. Mortality was 3.7%. The patients who died had at least one or more comorbidities. The main complications were ARIS, heart failure, and multiple organ failure.

To the Editor:We read with great interest the recent article by Zhu et al.[1].In the study,the authors analyzed the outcomes of 26 patients diagnosed with hepatic artery occlusion(HAO)and treated with an endovascular approach(EVT)within the first 30 days after ortho-topic liver transplantation(LT).The median interval from LT to EVT was 7 days,most patients were treated with angioplasty and only two(7.7%)needed stent *** authors should be congrat-ulated as they achieved a 100%of success rate with an 80.8%of 1-year survival rate.

Large solitary ovarian metastasis from colorectal cancer diagnosed by endoscopic ultrasound

A case is presented of rectal carcinoma in which during staging by endoscopic ultrasound （EUS） a second large extra recta l mass was seen not otherwise visualized on computer tomograghy （CT） that was a solitary ovarian metastasis. The surgeon was alerted to the EUS finding prior to the planned laparoscopic colectomy. On retrospective review of the CT pelvis after surgery, the radiologist could still not diagnose the ovarian lesion separated from the primary rectal tumor due to their close proximity. However, on EUS we were able to clearly see on real-time imaging that there was a distinct peri-rectal mass apart from the primary rectal tumor.

Orientation effect on ground motion measurement for Mexican subduction earthquakes

The existence of the principal directions of the ground motion based on Arias intensity is well-known. These principal directions do not necessarily coincide with the orientations of recording sensors or with the orientations along which the ground motion parameters such as the peak ground acceleration and the pseudo-spectral acceleration （PSA） are maximum. This is evidenced by the fact that the maximum PSA at different natural vibration periods for horizontal excitations do not correspond to the same orientation. A recent analysis carried out for California earthquake records suggests that an orientation-dependent ground motion measurement for horizontal excitations can be developed. The main objective of this study is to investigate and provide seismic ground motion measurements in the horizontal plane, including bidirectional horizontal ground motions, for Mexican interplate and inslab earthquake records. Extensive statistical analyses of PSA are conducted for the assessment. The analysis results suggest that similar to the case of California records, the average behavior of the ratio of the PSA to the maximum resulting PSA can be approximated by a quarter of an ellipse in one quadrant; and that the ratio can be considered to be independent of the value of the maximum resulting PSA, earthquake magnitude, earthquake distance and the focal depth. Sets of response ratios and attenuation relationships that can be used to represent a bidirectional horizontal ground motion measurement for Mexican interplate and inslab earthquakes were also developed.
