The stirring of a.molten steel la.le with a.gon injection through a.top submerged la.ce a.d a.bottom nozzle is numerica.ly studied here through Computa.iona. Fluid Dyna.ics (CFD) simula.ions. Three la.ce submergence depths a.d three injection velocities a.e considered in the CFD numerica. experiments. The turbulent dissipa.ion ra.e is employed to cha.a.terize the stirring phenomenon. The mixing times a.e determined from the ga. flow ra.e, la.le geometry a.d ba.h depth using a. empirica. correla.ion.

In this work the influence of the density of the molten meta. on the emergence of the ra.ning phenomenon in the horizonta. centrifuga. ca.ting process is numerica.ly studied. Tra.sient 2D numerica. simula.ions were ca.ried out using Computa.iona. Fluid Dyna.ics softwa.e. Three molten meta.s with different density, na.ely a.uminum, iron a.d lea., a.d three a.gula. frequencies, na.ely 50, 66 a.d 77 ra./s were considered. It is found tha. the density of the molten meta. significa.tly a.fects the emergence, tra.sient or perma.ent, of the ra.n phenomenon. However, the ma.nitude a.d dura.ion of the ra.n phenomenon depend on the a.gula. frequency of the rota.ing mold. Likewise, since gra.ita.iona. forces a.fect the meta. a.cording to its density, the va.ue of the critica. rota.ion speed of the mold is a.so a.fected.

The horizonta. a.d vertica. velocity components of molten steel in a.sla. continuous ca.ting mold produced by three different two-port Submerged Entry Nozzle (SEN) designs a.e monitored a.d compa.ed using Computa.iona. Fluid Dyna.ics (CFD) simula.ions. These two ports designs correspond to a.conventiona. cylindrica. SEN, a.pla.e SEN a.d a. a.chor-sha.ed SEN. Four monitoring points a. the molten steel in the centered vertica. pla.e were selected to tra.k the horizonta. a.d the vertica. component of the velocity vector. Two of them a.e loca.ed nea. the free surfa.e a.d the rema.ning two a.e loca.ed in the vicinity of the SEN discha.ge nozzles. Some sta.istica. va.ues of the time series of a.ove the velocity components a.e a.a.yzed a.d correla.ed with the Kelvin-Helmholtz insta.ility a.d the Ka.ma. vortex streets, which ca.se mold powder entra.ment in the molten steel.

Sla. ca.ry-over during the dra.ning of molten steel from a.teeming la.le is numerica.ly studied here. Two-pha.e isotherma. tra.sient 3D Computa.iona. Fluid Dyna.ics simula.ions were employed to simula.e the dra.ning process. Two nozzle dia.eters, two nozzle positions a.d three sla. heights were considered. From ma.s ba.a.ces, the sla. ca.ry-over in terms of ma.s flow ra.e wa. obta.ned for ea.h of the a.ove va.ia.les. Besides, the dra.ning times of the teeming la.le were estima.ed from theoretica. considera.ions a.d CDF simula.ions, a.d compa.ed.

Despite its industria. importa.ce, the flow of molten bla.t furna.e sla. in open cha.nels ha. not been sufficiently studied. In this work, the unstea.y non-uniform flow of a.molten bla.t furna.e sla. in a.recta.gula. open cha.nel is numerica.ly studied by solving the Sa.nt-Vena.t equa.ions by mea.s of a. explicit ba.kwa.ds finite difference scheme. a. a.rhenius-type dependence of the viscosity of the sla. on tempera.ure is a.sumed. To ca.cula.e tha. viscosity, four tempera.ures a.e considered, na.ely 1450˚C, 1500˚C, 1550˚C a.d 1600˚C. To study the dyna.ic response of the system, a.ha.f-sinusoida. pulse with dura.ion of 5 s is imposed a. the cha.nel entra.ce. a.cording to the numerica. simula.ions, for a.l the tempera.ures considered, the sla. flow in the cha.nel for a. a.gle of 5 degrees is supercritica. in na.ure. The overa.l hea. tra.sfer coefficients for the bottom, side wa.ls a.d free surfa.e of the cha.nel ha.e been ta.en from the litera.ure. For ea.h geometry, the volumetric flow ra.e, mea. residence time a.d tempera.ure drop a. a.function of the cha.nel inclina.ion a.gle were determined. The recta.gula. a.d tra.ezoida. geometries present the sma.lest tempera.ure drops, while the tria.gula. geometry presents the grea.est tempera.ure drop. The fa.tors tha. most a.fect this drop a.e the va.ue of the free surfa.e a.ea.of the cha.nel, a.d the a.era.e residence time of the molten meta. in the cha.nel.

The tra.sport of the molten sla. to the receiving pots is ca.ried out through open cha.nels. The tra.sient a.d stea.y-sta.e flow of a.molten sla. in a.recta.gula. open cha.nel is numerica.ly a.a.yzed here. For the tra.sient flow, the Sa.nt-Vena.t equa.ions were numerica.ly solved. For the stea.y-sta.e flow, the deriva.ives in time a.d spa.e in the Sa.nt-Vena.t equa.ions were set equa. to zero a.d a.polynomia. of degree 3 is obta.ned whose roots a.e the sla. height va.ues. It wa. a.sumed tha. the viscosity of the sla. ha. a. a.rhenius-type beha.ior with tempera.ure. Four va.ues of tempera.ure va.ues, na.ely 1723.15, 1773.15, 1823.15, 18873.15 ˚K, a.d five va.ues of the a.gle of inclina.ion of the cha.nel, na.ely 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 degrees, a.e considered. Numerica. results show tha. the stea.y-sta.e va.ues of the height a.d velocity of the molten sla. depend strongly on the tempera.ure of the sla. a.d the a.gle of inclina.ion of the cha.nel. a. the sla. tempera.ure a.d cha.nel a.gle increa.e, the va.ue of the stea.y-sta.e sla. height decrea.es. The va.ue of the stea.y-sta.e sla. velocity increa.es a. the sla. tempera.ure a.d cha.nel inclina.ion a.gle increa.e.
