Biological cells exhibit diverse phenomena induced through linking of chemical reactions of molecules and solid surface *** is then a significant topic in the field of chemistry to study phenomena induced through this linking using synthetic systems,which can promote our understanding of biological phenomena and can be applied to the development of novel *** nanoparticles(sNPs),which are synthetic inorganic materials,are attractive for such purposes,because of their following characteristics:they can adsorb large amounts of molecules on their surfaces,they can aggregate through contact between SNPs as well as contact between molecules and SNPs,and the molecules can be easily removed from solutions by *** contact of sNP surfaces with molecules then affects chemical reactions of molecules and also behaviors of *** article describes systems derived from synthetic helical molecules and sNPs,which exhibit notable phenomena including selective adsorption and molecular recognition,equilibrium shift,step kinetics with induction period,precipitation with flow and sweeping,and disaggregation and desorption by sonication,in which the high affinity of helical molecules with sNP surfaces plays important *** models that explain the phenomena are *** applications are also discussed,including the separation of molecules,capture of intermediates,the storage and release of molecules,equilibrium shift,clocking,and the translation of mechanical stimulations into chemical reactions.

Simulation of Needle-Type Corona Electrodes by the Finite Element Method

This paper describes a software tool, called LEVSOFT, suitable for the electric field simulations of corona electrodes by the Finite Element Method （FEM）. Special attention was paid to the user friendly construction of geometries with corners and sharp points, and to the fast generation of highly refined triangular meshes and field maps. The execution of selfadaptive meshes was also implemented. These customized features make the code attractive for the simulation of needle-type corona electrodes. Some case examples involving needle type electrodes are presented.

The Experience of Mammography Based on the Memoirs of Examinees

The purpose of this study was to shed light on the pattern of the mammography experience from the examinee’s perspective based on episodic information extracted from notes written by the examinees. Using the notes is an effective approach to maintain privacy and avoid excessive stress. The study methods were qualitative inductive analyses of four sets of notes. Results showed that examinees “checked the words and actions of the medical staff” while relying on the “peace of mind instilled by the technician” before taking the mammogram. However, as breast compression became more intense, their feelings changed to a sense of “betrayal by someone on whom they were relying” since they felt that the technician was “ignoring the situation” or “considering but continuing breast compression”. They were also affected by the “shooting position which is impossible to avoid”. Breast compression during the mammography was a “pressure pain that exceeded their expectations” causing “dissatisfaction with the screening as a result of the pain” and “subconsciously created systemic tension”. Meanwhile, during the shooting, the examinees had performed “quiet countermeasures” such as “self-coping to distract themselves from the pain”. Examinees “earnestly desired a minimal shooting time” but, on the other hand, they also wanted “certainty of shooting rather than consideration of pain”. From these results, it is apparent that examinees were objectively observing the staff, even during shooting and the examinees were using self-coping measures to counter the pain. Providing support measures during mammography procedures is suggested based on the patterns of experiences.

Cross Correlation of Intra-day Stock Prices in Comparison to Random Matrix Theory

＜正＞ This study investigates F0 declination as a global-level prosodic phenomenon, establishing a new discourse-based model of prosodic structure in Japanese. The model includes two levels of declination in a hierarchical order: utterance units and prosodic paragraphs, a higher level of declination consisting of embedded declinations. Comparing and contrasting three types of discourse--read speech, conversation, and narrative--this study provides an accurate description of declination, based on an all-points linear regression line procedure. The results reveal a significant occurrence of declination not only in read speech but also in spontaneous speech. In addition, all three types of discourse exhibit both levels of declination, i.e. utterance units and prosodic paragraphs, providing evidence for the discourse model proposed in this study.

We propose and apply a new algorithm of principal component analysis which is suitable for a large sized, highly random time series data, such as a set of stock prices in a stock market. This algorithm utilizes the fact that the major part of the time series is random, and compare the eigenvalue spectrum of cross correlation matrix of a large set of random time series, to the spectrum derived by the random matrix theory (RMT) at the limit of large dimension (the number of independent time series) and long enough length of time series. We test this algorithm on the real tick data of American stocks at different years between 1994 and 2002 and show that the extracted principal components indeed reflects the change of leading stock sectors during this period.

It is poorly understood how plants control their growth by cell division, elongation, and differentiation. We have characterized a seedling-lethal mutant segregation distortion 3 （sd3） that showed a very dwarf phenotype when grown in the light and, in the dark, had short hypocotyls with reduced ploidy levels. The corresponding gene of SD3 encodes a protein with high similarity to yeast translocase on the inner mitochondrial membrane 21 （TIM21）, which is a component of the TIM23 complex. Indeed, SD3 protein fused to GFP localized in the mitochondria. SD3 overexpression increased cotyledon size in the light and hypocotyl thickness in the dark. The expression of genes for several subunits of the respiratory-chain complexes III and IV was up-regulated in SD3-overexpressing plants. Furthermore, these plants showed high levels of ATP whereas those of sd3 were low. These results suggested that SD3 induced an increase in cell size by raising the expression of the respiratory-chain subunit genes and hence increased the intracellular ATP levels, We propose that intracellular ATP levels regulated by mitochondria control plant organ size.

Abstract Vacuum insulation of -1 MV is a common issue for the HV bushing and the accel- erator for the ITER neutral beam injector （NBI）. The HV bushing as an insulating feedthrough has a five-stage structure and each stage consists of double-layered insulators. To sustain -1 MV in vacuum, reduction of electric field at several triple points existing around the double-layered insulators is a critical issue. To reduce electric field simultaneously at these points, three types of stress ring have been developed. In a voltage holding test of a full-scale mockup equipped with these stress rings, 120% of rated voltage was sustained and the voltage holding capability required in ITER was verified. In the MeV accelerator, whose target is the acceleration of a H- ion beam of 1 MeV, 200 A/mS, the gap between the grid support was extended to suppress breakdowns triggered by electric field concentration at the edge and corner of the grid support. This modi- fication improved the voltage holding capability in vacuum, and the MeV accelerator succeeded in sustaining -1 MV stably, b-~rthermore, it appeared that the H- ions beam was deflected and a part of the beam was intercepted at the acceleration grid, This causes high heat load on the grids and breakdowns during beam acceleration. To suppress the direct interception, a new grid was designed with proper aperture displacement based on a three dimensional beam trajectory analysis, As a result, 980 keV, 185 A/ms H- ion beam acceleration has been demonstrated, which is close to the ITER requirement.

The Effect of Humorous Stimuli on Alleviating Pain during Mammography: A Preliminary Study

Mammography is widely performed as a standardized procedure for breast cancer screening;however, women often feel some degree of pain during this procedure. Currently, there are limited options available for alleviating pain related to mammography. A non-medicinal approach to the alleviation of pain involves the effects of laughter on physical and psychological wellbeing. We therefore examined the possibility that humorous stimuli would alleviate the physical burden on women undergoing mammography. We assessed 29 women, 15 women received only conventional mammography (neutral group), while 14 women (humor group) watched a funny video during the same examination. The intensity of pain experienced during mammography was assessed by visual analogue scale (VAS) and the VAS results showed a statistically significant difference (P = 0.007) between the two groups, with the humor group experiencing less pain. In an additional experiment, 14 women in the humor group also underwent conventional mammography without exposure to the funny video and pain was assessed by VAS. We found that the pain experienced during conventional mammography without the funny video was significantly greater than the pain experienced during the same mammography but with the funny video (P = 0.047). These findings suggested the possibility of alleviating pain during mammography by humorous stimuli.

Objectives:To translate and study the factor structure of a Japanese version of the Stressors in Nursing Students ***:The Stressors in Nursing Students scale was translated into Japanese and administered to a large cohort(N=1298)of female Japanese nursing students across five universities and across all four years of the nursing *** data were analysed using exploratory factor ***:Exploratory factor analysis revealed four factors:‘Clinical’;‘Conflict and confidence’;‘Education’;and‘Free time’.The relationship between the total score on the Stressors in Nursing Students scale and the demographic aspects of the sample was weak but there was a significant increase in the perception of stressors between first and second year ***:There were similarities and differences between the perception of stressors by nursing students in Japan compared with,for example,the United Kingdom and China *** a fourfactor structure was found here,the distribution of items in the Stressors in Nursing Students scale differed from previous studies in the United Kingdom and China with the‘Free time’factor being unique to this *** is an issue for nursing students and is related to the specific stressors they encounter in the process of their work and *** can inform the development of strategies to reduce such stressors among nursing students in multiple,global contexts.
