Aims Annually variable but synchronous production of large seed crops(‘masting’)is a widespread phenomenon in temperate *** concerns about the impacts of anthropogenic climate change(ACC)on plant reproduction gives urgency to our need to understand better the role of climate on tree reproduction,and in particular,mast *** our understanding of reproductive phenology however,there is little consensus regarding how climate affects plant reproductive effort or indeed the actual environmental triggers that underpin masting *** We used a 27-year record of acorn yield from a population of 12 Quercus robur trees located in southern england to compare mast-ing frequency and post-dispersal acorn yield each year for each tree,with long-term weather data over the same *** focussed on discrete or sequential climate cues(temperature,precipitation and frost days)as likely predictors of oak *** Findings Annual post-dispersal acorn crop varied greatly;*** acorns in 14 of the 27 years,but there was no sequential pattern of crop ver-sus non-crop years indicating that weather,rather than resource limitation alone,dictated the timing of *** years were instead most closely associated with relatively cool late sum-mer conditions in the preceding year,followed by anomalous sum-mer warmth within crop *** yield increased following dry April and above-average May and June temperatures within crop *** our results support a general association between warm late spring and summer conditions,and crop frequency and yield,respectively,the influence of cooler later summer conditions in the year prior to masting highlights how a combination of weather cues may dictate the occurrence of mast ***,our results corroborate not only the hypothesis that temperature differ-entials between consecutive years,not absolute temperatures,may be the better predictor of mast seeding events but lend support al

Discrete element modelling of the quasi-static uniaxial compression of individual infant formula agglomerates

Infant formula is usually produced in an agglomerated powder form. These agglomerates are subjected to many transient forces following their manufacture. These can be difficult to quantify experimentally because of their small magnitudes and short durations, Numerical models have the potential to address this gap in the experimental data. The objective of the research described here was to calibrate a discrete element model for these agglomerates using experimental data obtained for quasi-static loading, and to use this model to study the mechanics of the particle response in detail. The Taguchi method was previously proposed as a viable calibration approach for discrete element models. In this work, the method was assessed for calibration of the model parameters （e.g., bond stiffnesses and strengths） considering three responses： the force at failure, strain at failure and agglomerate stiffness. The Weibull moduli for the simulation results and the experimental data were almost identical following calibration and the 37% characteristic stresses were similar. An analysis of the energy terms in the model provided useful insight into the model response. The bond energy and the normal force exerted on the platens were strongly correlated, and bond breakage events coincided with the highest energy dissipation rates.

effect of sample size on the response of DeM samples with a realistic grading

This paper shows that for DeM simulations of triaxial tests using samples with a grading that is repre- sentative of a real soil, the sample size significantly influences the observed material response. Four DeM samples with identical initial states were produced： three cylindrical samples bounded by rigid wails and one bounded by a cubical periodic cell, When subjected to triaxial loading, the samples with rigid boundaries were more dilative, stiffer and reached a higher peak stress ratio than the sample enclosed by periodic boundaries. For the rigid-wall samples, dilatancy increased and stiffness decreased with increasing sample size, The periodic sample was effectively homogeneous, The void ratio increased and the contact density decreased close to the rigid walls, This heterogeneity reduced with increasing sample size. The positions of the critical state lines （CSLs） of the overall response in e-log p＇ space were sensitive to the sample size, although no difference was observed between their slopes. The critical states of the interior regions of the rigid-wall-bounded samples approached that of the homogeneous periodic sample with increasing sample size. The ultimate strength of the material at the critical state is independent of sample size.

A Wireless Body Sensor Platform to Detect Progressive Deterioration in Musculoskeletal Systems

Recent developments in technology have helped to reduce the physical size and weight of devices and opened up new opportunities for their application in delivering unobtrusive healthcare services. In particular, kinetic and kinematic systems, that use sensors attached to the body, are currently being used to measure and understand many different aspects of human gait and behaviour. This has been particularly useful in treating stroke patients, rehabilitation, and understanding sedentary behaviour. Nonetheless, many of these systems are only capable of providing information about rudimentary movement rather than data on the mechanics of motion itself (tendons, ligaments and so on). Therefore, the information required by healthcare professionals to treat diseases like progressive deterioration of the musculoskeletal system, i.e. arthritis, cannot be determined. This paper discusses some of the technologies currently used to assess movement and posits a novel approach based on strain gauge technology to measure the constituent parts of a joint and its movement. In this way, the mechanics of motion can be studied and used to help detect and treat musculoskeletal diseases. A case study is presented to demonstrate the applicability of our approach.

The association between ADHD and eating disorders/pathology in adolescents: A systematic review

Background: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), one of the most common neurodevelopmental conditions of childhood, is associated with high rates of mood and behavioral disorders. Preliminary evidence suggests that ADHD may also be associated with eating disorders (eD) or eating pathology (eP). This systematic review synthesizes the extant published literature on this association among youth ages 12-21 years. Methods: Literature searches were performed using Medline, Ovid/Psych Info, Google Scholar, and via manual inspection of bibliographies. Cross-sectional, case-control, and prospective studies published in english with sample sizes larger than 50, participant ages 12-21 years, and assessed ADHD and eD or eP, were considered for review. Case reports, feeding, and drug studies were excluded. Results: Preliminary searches yielded 337 articles;eight articles met inclusion/exclusion criteria. Two studies documented an association between ADHD and eD, and three studies found an association between ADHD and eP. Youth with ADHD were nearly 3 to 6 times more likely to develop an eD than youth without ADHD, and were also more likely to have higher rates of eP, body dissatisfaction, and desire to lose weight/ drive for thinness. Impulsivity was predictive of eP, and ADHD youth with co-occurring mood/behavioral disorders and punitive parental relationships were at higher risk. Conclusions: Five of eight studies documented an association between ADHD and eD or eP in adolescents. Future research is needed to confirm and refine further these findings. The findings have clinical implications, including the inclusion of eD/eP in screening and anticipatory guidance efforts. evaluating whether medical management of ADHD may be efficacious in preventing and/or treating eD/eP is also warranted.

Resident Learning Styles: Are We Maximizing Learning Opportunities for Today’s Resident Learner?

Medical education is in constant evolution. It is important to continuously evaluate how residents are being taught in order to improve, and to maximize didactic time while improving standardized test scores. The aim of this study is to assess how residents prefer to learn, which factors preclude residents from studying, the prevalence of certain teaching methods at our institutions, and how this affects standardized exam scores. In order to gather this data, residents across the three Mayo Clinic campuses were anonymously surveyed regarding their preferred study habits, factors that affect their ability to study, how they are most frequently taught within their program, and their most recent in training exam (ITe) scores. Residents are frequently encountering didactic lessons that are consistent with their preferred study methods. However, there seems to be a number of preferred study methods that may not be represented by standard didactic sessions. There are many other factors that affect a resident’s ability to study and those should be taken into consideration by the department when deciding how to teach their residents.
