Short, Medium, and Long-Term Stroke Mortality in Libreville and Associated Factors

Strokes are common around the world and especially in sub-Saharan Africa. They are responsible for severe sequelae and the majority of deaths. In Gabon, no study on stroke mortality has been conducted. Objective: To determine short, medium, long-term mortality and factors associated with long-term stroke mortality. Method: Our study took place in the Neurology Department of the University Hospital Center of Libreville (UHCL). It was a historical cohort study with descriptive and analytical purposes covering the period from June 1 to August 31, 2018 and taking into account hospitalized patients from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2017. We conducted a comprehensive systematic recruitment of patients with stroke, 18 years old and more, and had been agreed to give information. We included all patients meeting the inclusion criteria. The data was gathered using Epi-Info 7 software. The CHI-2 test was used for the comparison of frequencies and the Student’s test, for comparison of means. Multivariate analysis with logistic regression allowed us to look for factors associated with long-term mortality. A result was statistically significant for a p 0.05 value. Results: At 3 months, 28 patients (18.1%) died, at 6 months thirty-one patients or 20.1% died. At 5 years old, fifty-three patients or 34.4% had died. The factors associated with long-term mortality, if the lost of sight were all alive were tobacco (p = 0.01) and stroke (p = 0.008). If all those who were lost to sight had died, no factor was associated with 5-year mortality. Conclusion: Stroke mortality must not be taken for granted, it can be underestimated because of the large number of lost sight. Measures must be put in place to strengthen post-stroke monitoring. .

Numerical simulation of benzene transport in shoreline groundwater affected by tides under different conditions

The release and transport of benzene in coastal aquifers were investigated in the present *** simulations were implemented using the SEAM3D,coupled with GMS,to study the behavior of benzene in the subsurface of tidally influenced *** transport and fate of the benzene plume were simulated,considering advection,dispersion,sorption,biodegradation,and dissolution on the *** tide amplitudes,aquifer characteristics,and pollutant release locations were *** was found that the tide amplitude,hydraulic conductivity,and longitudinal dispersivity were the primary factors affecting the fate and transport of *** tidal amplitude influenced the transport speed and percentage of biodegradation of benzene plume in the beach.A high tidal range reduced the spreading area and enhanced the rate of benzene *** conductivity had an impact on plume residence time and the percentage of contaminant *** hydraulic conductivity induced longer residence time in each beach portion and a higher percentage of biodegradation on the *** plume dispersed and the concentration decreased due to high longitudinal *** results can be used to support future risk assessment and management for the shorelines impacted by spill and leaking *** the heterogeneous beach aquifer subjected to tides can also be further explored in the future study.

Survey on Knowledge of Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors in the Dakar Region

Introduction: Non-communicable diseases constitute a major public health problem, due to their morbi-mortality. The aim was to study knowledge of cardiovascular risk factors among residents of Dakar. Patients and Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. Our investigations were recruited over a six-month period (October 17, 2021 to March 21, 2022). Results: Two hundred and twenty-six (226) patients were enrolled. The mean age was 45.9 years. The under-40 age group was the most represented with 37.2%. There were 129 men (57.1%), giving a male/female sex ratio of 1.33. The highest level was represented by 159 people (70.4%). Those who responded (heart disease) were in the majority (38.1%). Hypertension was the most common CVD for 101 people (44.7%). One hundred and ninety (190) people (84%) knew the risk factors for CVD. Good knowledge of risk factors concerned 103 people (54.2%). Obesity was the best-known risk factor in 156 cases (69%). The media was the most important source of information for 121 people (53.5%). Hypertensives were the most represented with 8.4%. One hundred and thirty (130) people (57.5%) had previously paid attention to these FDRCVs. Awareness campaigns were the most effective means of communication for 170 cases (75.2%). Sixteen (16) people (35.6%) were taking antihypertensive medication. Walking was the most popular physical activity for 102 people (45%). People with a balanced diet were in the majority, with 174 respondents (77.0%). Conclusion: NCDs are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. It is essential to develop and implement a prevention and management program.

Compact accelerator-based neutron source facilities are garnering attention and play an important and expanding role in material and engineering sciences,as well as in neutron science education and *** are produced by bombarding a low-energy proton beam onto a beryllium or lithium *** such an acceleratorbased neutron source,a radio frequency quadrupole(RFQ)is usually utilized to accelerate a high-intensity proton beam to a few *** study mainly covers the highfrequency structure design optimizations of a 4-vane RFQ with pi-mode stabilizer loops(PISLs)and its RF stability analysis.A 176 MHz RFQ accelerator is designed to operate at a 10%duty factor and could accelerate an80 mA proton beam from 65 keV to 2.5 MeV within a length of 5.3 *** adoption of PISLs ensures high RF stability,eases the operation of the accelerator,and implies less stringent alignment and machining tolerances.

Asymptotic Analysis in a Gas-Solid Combustion Model with Pattern Formation

The authors consider a free interface problem which stems from a gas-solid model in combustion with pattern formation. A third-order, fully nonlinear, self-consistent equation for the flame front is derived. Asymptotic methods reveal that the interface approaches a solution to the Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation. Numerical results which illustrate the dynamics are presented.
