Validation for the Determination of Extractable Metals in Ashes from Biomass Incinerators by ICP-OES

Biomass ashes contain valuable elements for plant growth, but also often high amounts of harmful heavy metals which limit their reuse in forests and on grassland. For monitoring metal concentrations, a fast and reliable method allowing the quantitative determination even at trace levels is mandatory. Therefore an analytical method consisting of an acidic microwave assisted digestion prior to ICP-OES measurement was optimized. The elements of interest were AI, As, B, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, St, Ti, V, and Zn. A validation including the following parameters was performed for each analyte： limit of detection, limit of quantification, recovery by spiking experiments, accuracy by analyzing a certified reference material, reproducibility （wihtin-24 hours, 4 and 7 days）, linearity, and uncertainty of measurement. Two standards series were used for calibration - one with 1 M HNO3 and one with additionally 2 g/L Mg（NOD2 to investigate the elimination or decrease of possible matrix effects. Both calibration methods showed very good recoveries. The method optimized allows the determination of the relevant elements covered by the recommendation of the Austrian ministry for agriculture and represents thus an appropriate tool for monitoring the metal contents in biomass ashes.

Consumer Response to the Product Carbon Footprint （PCF）

A survey of 277 German participants demonstrates that a Product Carbon Footprint （PCF） label is not yet a suitable instrument for communication with consumers because of the lack of standardized PCF calculation within Europe. Most consumers do not understand either the PCF statement or the PCF calculation. The public message of a PCF label does not conform to the terms of sustainability. At first sight, PCF seems to be an opportunity to communicate the sustainability aspects of food to consumers, but too many different approaches to defining PCF exist in Europe. Additionally, the use of a ＂green＂ PCF label may distort trading conditions because of the lack of PCF-issuing authorities in accordance with World Trade Organization （WTO） standards. Hence, PCF may ultimately deceive consumers through its misapplication if the PCF calculation is not aligned to internationally accepted standards.

Positive intercropping effects on biomass production are species-specific and involve rhizosphere enzyme activities: Evidence from a field study

Less attention has been given to soil enzymes that contribute to beneficial rhizosphere interactions in intercropping ***,we performed a field experiment by growing faba bean,lupine,and maize in mono and mixed cultures in a moderately fertile *** measured shoot biomass and the kinetic parameters(maximal velocity(V max)and Michaelis-constant(K m))of three key enzymes in the rhizosphere:Leucine-aminopeptidase(LAP),β-1,4-N-acetylglucosaminidase(NAG),and phosphomonoesterase(PHO).Faba bean benefitted in mixed cultures by greater shoot biomass production with both maize and lupine compared to its expected biomass in ***,LAP and NAG kinetic parameters were less responsive to mono and mixed cultures across the crop *** contrast,both the V max and K m values of PHO increased in the faba bean rhizosphere when grown in mixed cultures with maize and lupine.A positive relative interaction index for shoot P and N uptake for faba bean showed its net facilitative interactions in the mixed ***,these results suggest that over-productivity in intercropping is crop-specific and the positive intercropping effects could be modulated by P *** argue that the enzyme activities involved in nutrient cycling should be incorporated in further research.

Effect of pre-annealing on microstructure evolution of TRC AA3003 aluminum alloy subjected to ECAP

An AA3003 aluminum alloy prepared by twin-roll casting was modified by a small amount of zirconium. Annealing at 450 °C led to precipitation of coherent Al3Zr phase and a simultaneous co-precipitation of Mn-richα-Al(Mn,Fe)Si phase. Severe plastic deformation by equal channel angular pressing resulted in the grain refinement and increase of microhardness. Observation by electron back-scatter diffraction and in-situ transmission electron microscopy revealed influence of pre-annealing on microstructure changes during post-deformation heat treatment. Dislocation recovery and precipitation ofα-Al(Mn,Fe)Si particles preceded recrystallization at 450 °C in material which was not annealed before deformation. The pre-deformation annealing enabled dynamic recovery during deformation as it depleted the solid solution from Mn atoms. Recrystallization was enhanced by Al3Zr precipitates.

Comparison of a new stent and Wallstent for transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt in a porcine model

AIM: To evaluate a new balloon-expandable stainless steel stent (Cordis stent) in a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) porcine model and compared with Wallstent. METHODS: TIPS was performed in 26 normal domestic pigs weighing 20 kg-30 kg using a Cordis stent or Wallstent (13 pigs in each stent). All pigs were sacrificed at the 14th day after TIPS. The stent deployment delivery system, stent patency, and stent recoil after placement were *** response in representative histological sections from the center,hepatic and portal regions of the two stent designs were quantified. RESULTS: The shunt was widely patent in 4 pigs in the Cordis stent group (4/12, premature dead in 1 pig), and in 5 pigs in the Wallstent group (5/13). All remaining stents of both designs were occluded or stenotic. The mean quantified proliferation including thickness of the proliferation and the ratio of proliferation: total area in three assayed regions in Cordis stent and Wallstent was 2.18 mm:2.00 mm, and 59.18 mm2:51.66 mm2, respectively (P > 0.05). The delivery system and mechanical properties of the Cordis stent functioned well. CONCLUSION: The new Cordis stent is appropriate for TIPS procedure.

Powder metallurgy is a powerful method for the preparation of materials with superior *** work aimed to investigate the effect of powder size on the microstructure,mechanical,and corrosion properties of advanced WE43(Mg-4Y-3REE-Zr)alloy prepared by spark plasma sintering(SPS).At the same time,the effect of HF pre-treatment of the powder on the properties of final compacted products is *** powder particles yielded microstructure with more interfaces formed by Y_(2)O_(3),or MgF_(2) and YF_(3).These interfaces work as barriers against corrosion,which greatly improves corrosion *** suggested pre-treatment of powder in HF further reduced the corrosion rate of the compacted *** the contrary,fragile interfaces of YF_(3) decreased mechanical properties as the crack primarily propagates through these *** original powder containing the mixture of all powder fractions exerted the best combination of mechanical *** size has also shown to affect ignition *** highest ignition temperature was measured for the finest powder fraction.

Drug-induced liver injury in inflammatory bowel disease: 1-year prospective observational study

To analyze 1-year liver injury burden in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) *** a 6-mo inclusion period, consecutive IBD cases having a control visit at IBD center were included. Basic demographics, IBD phenotype and IBD treatment were recorded on entry. Aminotransferase (AT) activities of ALT, AST, ALP and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) were measured at baseline, 3 mo prior to study entry and prospectively every 3 mo for 1 year. Liver injury patterns were predefined as: Grade 1 in ALT 1-3 × upper limit of normal (ULN), grade 2 in ALT > 3 × ULN, hepatocellular injury in ALT > 2 × ULN, cholestatic injury in simultaneous GGT and ALP elevation > ULN. Persisting injury was reported when AT elevations were found on > 1 measurement. Risk factors for the patterns of liver injury were identified among demographic parameters, disease phenotype and IBD treatment in univariate and multivariate analysis. Finally, implications for the change in IBD management were evaluated in cases with persisting hepatocellular or cholestatic *** hundred and fifty-one patients were included having 917 ALT and 895 ALP and GGT measurements. Over one year, grade 1 injury was found in 66 (26.3%), grade 2 in 5 (2%) and hepatocellular injury in 16 patients (6.4%). Persisting hepatocellular injury was found in 4 cases. Cholestasis appeared in 11 cases (4.4%) and persisted throughout the entire study period in 1 case. In multivariate analysis, hepatocellular injury was associated with BMI (OR = 1.13, 1.02-1.26), liver steatosis (OR = 10.61, 2.22-50.7), IBD duration (1.07, 1.00-1.15) and solo infliximab (OR = 4.57, 1.33-15.7). Cholestatic liver injury was associated with prior intestinal resection (OR = 32.7, 3.18-335), higher CRP (OR = 1.04, 1.00-1.08) and solo azathioprine (OR = 10.27, 1.46-72.3). Cloud microphysical data observed with PMS probes have been combined with radar and other in-situ data collected by a NOAA P-3 aircraft that flew through the stratiform and transition regions of a mesoscale convective complex(MCC).The combined data have been analyzed with respect to the mescscale structure of the storm *** characteristics of ice particles in the transition and stratiform regions were quite *** ice particle concentrations in the transition region were about 4 to 6 times that found in the stratiform region,and the size of ice particles in the stratiform region was about twice that in the transition *** relatively lower radar reflectivity in the transition region is a result of smaller particle *** main precipitation particle growth mechanisms are riming and aggregation in the transition region ard the aggregation process predominates in the stratiform region referred from the microphysical *** ag- gregation starts in the upper,colder levls but becomes more efficient as the particles approach the melting layer.
