Background Since t.e lat. 1990s, bigheaded carps(largely silver carp [Hypopht.almicht.ys molit.ix] but.also bighead carp [H. nobilis]) have est.blished t.roughout.t.e lower Mississippi River basin. Using previously st.died oxbow lakes in t.e lower Whit. River basin, Arkansas, we compared current.2017, “post.carp” est.blishment. fish assemblages t. hist.rical(2002, “pre-carp” est.blishment. fish assemblages. Fish assemblages were comprehensively assessed using mult.ple gears, including boat.elect.ofishing, mini-fyke net., and experiment.l small-mesh gill *** t.t.st. suggest.d t.at.fish assemblage indices of richness, diversit., evenness, and dominance were oft.n great.r(P t.e post.carp period as reflect.d by boat.elect.ofishing and experiment.l gill net.. However, all indices were generally similar(P > 0.05) bet.een t.e pre-carp and post.carp period wit. fish assemblages depict.d using mini-fyke net.. Nonmet.ic mult.dimensional scaling analyses indicat.d t.at.fish assemblages differed st.uct.rally bet.een pre-carp and post.carp periods. Assemblage differences were linked t. bot. small and large abundance changes for more t.an 20 species. Abundances of gizzard shad(Dorosoma cepedianum), emerald shiner(Not.opis at.erinoides), pugnose minnow(Opsopoeodus emiliae), crappies(Pomoxis spp.), bluegill(Lepomis macrochirus), orangespot.ed sunfish(L. humilis), and yellow bass(Morone mississippiensis) declined bet.een t.e pre-carp and post.arp periods. Conversely, abundances of weed shiner(N. t.xanus), pallid shiner(Hybopsis amnis), longear sunfish(L. megalot.s), buffalofishes(Ict.obus spp.), and gars(Lepisost.us spp.) generally increased during t.e same *** Alt.ough not.possible t. conclude assemblage shift. were ent.rely relat.d t. bigheaded carps due t. t.e absence of an appropriat. reference syst.m where carps did not.est.blish, t.e wide est.blishment.of t.ese carps is one of t.e most.pervasive changes t. have occurred in t.e lower Whit.
