Trypanosomosi. i. major drawback to profi.able li.estock producti.n i. sub-Sahara Afri.an, i.cludi.g Ni.eri.. Knowledge of the cytoki.es producti.n i. the phase of natural i.fecti.n may help to better di.gnose, treat and prevent bovi.e trypanosomosi.. The purpose of the thi. study was to determi.e the levels of i.terferon-gamma (i.N-γ), i.terleuki.-10 (i.-10) and cardi.c troponi.–i.(cTni. i. the sera of cattle naturally i.fected wi.h T. brucei. T. congolense and T. vi.ax and correlate these levels wi.h parasi.aemi. and PCV of the i.fected ani.als. Fi.e mi.li.i.er of blood samples were collected vi. the jugular vei. from 411 randomly selected cattle i.to EDTA and non-ci.rated bottle. PCV was determi.ed manually usi.g HCT. Trypansomes were detected and characteri.ed by mi.roscopy and PCR, respecti.ely. Serum levels of i.N-γ, i.-10 and cTni.were determi.ed usi.g commerci.l ELi.A ki.. Data were summari.ed usi.g descri.ti.e stati.ti. and si.ni.i.ance of di.ferences determi.ed by ANOVA. Of the 62 samples posi.i.e for trypanosomes by mi.roscopy, 50 samples were confi.med to speci.s level by PCR. The sera levels of i.N-γ, i.-10 and cTni.of i.fected cattle were hi.her than non-i.fected cattle. The di.ferences were not si.ni.i.ant (p γ, i.-10 and cTni.i. cattle wi.h natural trypanosomosi.. Further i.vesti.ati.n i. requi.ed to understand the speci.i. effect of trypanosomes on myocardi.c i.tegri.y and i.teracti.n between the two cytoki.es i. natural trypanosomosi. i. cattle.

Trypanosomosi. remai.s a major challenge to li.estock producti.n i. much of tropi.al Sub-Saharan Afri.a, whi.e di.gnosi. and treatment sti.l depend on i.effi.i.nt parasi.ologi.al techni.ues. Endemi. i.fecti.ns depend on ani.al reservoi.s wi.h subcli.i.al parasi.emi.. We report molecular di.gnosi. of subcli.i.al Trypanosoma vi.ax (T. vi.ax) i.fecti.n usi.g polymerase chai. reacti.n (PCR) for the fi.st ti.e i. Ni.eri.n goats and associ.te parasi.e presence wi.h gross physi.logi.al trai.s and serum metaboli.es i. extensi.ely managed Ni.eri.n goats. PCR was used to ampli.y a 400 bp DNA fragment of the parasi.e genome i. 205 goats across three geographi.al zones of the country. Results showed a hi.h subcli.i.al i.fecti.n rate (SCi.) of 71.7% i. the total goats exami.ed. Overall SCi.s of 71%, 75.9% and 55.6% were recorded i. West Afri.an Dwarf, Red Sokoto and Sahel goats respecti.ely, whi.e geographi.al SCi.s were 71.2% (Southwest), 75% (Northwest) and 70% (Northeast). T. vi.ax presence had si.ni.i.ant (P 0.05) effect on respi.atory rate and i. associ.ted wi.h hi.her creati.i.e levels i. sera. Logi.ti. regressi.n analyses wi.h Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fi. showed that respi.atory rate i. the most i.portant predi.ti.e trai. for the presence of T. vi.ax i.fecti.n (P 0.05). Goats appear to be a vi.ble reservoi. for T. vi.ax i.fecti.n of other li.estock. Molecular di.gnosi. of subcli.i.al trypanosomosi. usi.g PCR could be useful for large scale epi.emi.logi.al studi.s, early di.gnosi. of subcli.i.al i.fecti.n and treatment of the di.ease i. extensi.ely managed tropi.al goats.

An economi.ally-i.portant trai. i. poultry for whi.h gene i.enti.i.ati.n continues to be a challenge is immune response. The objective of the study was to quantitate the expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II i.i.BLB2i.i. gene at cytolyti. and latent i.mune response stages i. Ni.eri.n i.di.enous chi.kens. A total of 108 Nigerian indigenous chickens (NIC) were sourced across the South-western states in Nigeria. The birds were inoculated with sheep red blood cells (SRBC), after which blood samples were obtained (5 days post-inoculation) and antibody haemagglutination test was carried out to place the birds into groups of high and low antibody titre levels. The categorisation of the birds resulted in six groups of normal feather high, normal feather low, naked neck high, naked neck low, frizzle feather high and frizzle feather low antibody groups. A total of 48 chicks were selected from the progeny for gene expression studies.
