Suicide is the second leading cause of death in youth globally; however, there is uncertainty about how best to intervene. Suicide rates are typically higher in males than females, while the converse is true for suicide attempts. We review this "gender paradox" in youth, and in particular, the age-dependency of these sex/gender differences and the developmental mechanisms that may explain them. Epidemiologic, genetic,neurodevelopmental and psychopathological research have identified suicidal behaviour risks arising from genetic vulnerabilities and sex/gender differences in early adverse environments, neurodevelopment, mental disorder and their complex interconnections. Further, evolving sex-/gender-defined social expectations and norms have been thought to influence suicide risk. In particular, how youth perceive and cope with threats and losses(including conforming to others' or one's own expectations of sex/gender identity) and adapt to pain(through substance use and helpseeking behaviours). Taken together, considering brain plasticity over the lifespan, these proposed antecedents to youth suicide highlight the importance of interventions that alter early environment(s)(e.g., childhood maltreatment) and/or one's ability to adapt to them. Further, such interventions may have more enduring protective effects, for the individual and for future generations, if implemented in youth.

Small inspection robots allow for the optimal exploration of environments and the collection of data from challenging areas,particularly where there may be small access points or tight and fragile *** robots can be custom-built for specific tasks,but the design and assembly process for this can be costly,both in resources and assembly *** use of 3D printing to create Non-Assembly mechanisms can assist in saving time and resources by reducing the number of different components required and removing the necessity for complex assembly *** iterating on previous work performed in the institute,this paper introduces a novel robot design to push the capabilities of Non-Assembly *** building on previous knowledge,this new walking robot improves on the previous iteration by creating a more robust and reliable system,more capable of effectively exploring challenging environments accurately,while still using practices designed to save on cost and production *** tests were performed to provide an accurate comparison against the previous design and highlight the robots marked improvements in positional accuracy over its predecessor.

ThE environmental geochemistry problems during the processes of mining activities are intensively considered by scientists worldwide, and the hydrogeochemistry presents an important implication of toxic metalcontamination related to mining activities. The hydrogeochemistry due to mining activities and naturalmineralized processes present some differences whose comparison can indicate a good understanding of theinfluence of mining on the environment. This ongoing study aims at the hydrogeochemistry of toxic metals in the Au-As-hg-Tl metallogenicbelt of huijiabao anticline in southwest Guizhou, China. The presently-mined Lanmuchang mercury-thallium deposit with a hg-mining history of about 350 years containing one of the world’s highest concentration of thallium and the to-be-mined Yanshang gold deposit enriching high concentration of toxic metals have been chosen to study the hydrogeochemistry of toxic metals. The groundwater samples werecollected from the shallow aquifer in terms of spring, domestic well and karstic cave whereas the surfacewater was only sampled downside the surface drainage leaching the mine waste at Lanmuchang. First large scale application of novel Si stripixel detector in real large experiment: Si VTX in PhENIX upgrade at RhIC

2D position sensitive, single-sided Si stripixel detector was selected as the one of the two main components of the Si vertex tracker (Si SVX) in the upgraded PhENIX detector at RhIC (relativistic heavy ion collider) in Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). This is the first large scale application of the novel Si stripixel detector in a real large experiment after many years of research and development at BNL. The first and second prototype fabrication runs of the SVX stripixel detectors were carried out successfully in BNL’s Si detector development and processing Lab. The processing of these stripixel detectors is similar to that for the standard single-sided strip detectors: one-sided processing, single implant for the pixel (strip) electrodes, etc. The only additional processing step is the double metal process, a technology that is simple and well matured by many Si detector processing industries and labs, including BNL. The laser and beam tests on those prototype detectors show the 2D position sensitivity and good position resolution in both X and U coordinates (about 25 μm for 80 μm pitch). For the mass production of 400 sensors needed for the Si SVX, the processing technology has been successfully transferred to the industrial: hamamatsu Photonics (hPK). hPK has produced a pre-production run of stripixel sensors with the full PhENIX SVX specification on 150 mm diameter wafers. The laser tests on these pre-production wafers show good signal to noise ratio (about 20∶1).

Extraterrestrial Life in the Thermosphere: Plasmas, UAP, Pre-Life, Fourth State of Matter

“Plasmas” up to a kilometer in size and behaving similarly to multicellular organisms have been filmed on 10 separate NASA space shuttle missions, over 200 miles above Earth within the thermosphere. These self-illuminated “plasmas” are attracted to and may “feed on” electromagnetic radiation. They have different morphologies: 1) cone, 2) cloud, 3) donut, 4) spherical-cylindrical;and have been filmed flying towards and descending from the thermosphere into thunderstorms;congregating by the hundreds and interacting with satellites generating electromagnetic activity;approaching the Space Shuttles. Computerized analysis of flight path trajectories documents these plasmas travel at different velocities from different directions and change their angle of trajectory making 45°, 90°, and 180° shifts and follow each other. They’ve been filmed accelerating, slowing down, stopping, congregating, engaging in “hunter-predatory” behavior and intersecting plasmas leaving a plasma dust trail in their wake. Similar life-like behaviors have been demonstrated by plasmas created experimentally. “Plasmas” may have been photographed in the 1940s by WWII pilots (identified as “Foo fighters”);repeatedly observed and filmed by astronauts and military pilots and classified as Unidentified Aerial—Anomalous Phenomenon. Plasmas are not biological but may represent a form of pre-life that via the incorporation of elements common in space, could result in the synthesis of RNA. Plasmas constitute a fourth state of matter, are attracted to electromagnetic activity, and when observed in the lower atmosphere likely account for many of the UFO-UAP sightings over the centuries.

生物物理经济学重视经济主体和经济行为的生物物理基础,其思想一度被传统经济学发展浪潮淹没,随着20世纪以来日益严峻的生态危机,这一学说得以复兴。2008年金融危机之后,全球经济长期处于震荡调整期,并呈现中低速发展的新态势。传统西方经济理论在解释新经济现象时遇到了困难。目前,生物物理经济学正在成长之中,并试图弥补新古典经济学的不足。文章梳理了不同时代的经济发展理论,探讨了生物物理经济学的起源、发展、研究内容和理论框架,从自然科学的角度,以能源为落脚点,寻求能源环境约束下经济发展的可持续之路。

Essential Gene(s) Targeted by Peptide Nucleic Acids Kills <i>Mycobacterium smegmatis</i>in Culture and in Infected Macrophages

Background: Antisense peptide nucleic acids (PNAs) exhibit growth inhibitory effects on bacteria by inhibiting the expression of essential genes and could be promising therapeutic agents for treating bacterial infections. A study was carried out to determine the efficacy of several antisense PNAs in inhibiting extracellular and intracellular growth of Mycobacterium smegmatis. Methods: Six PNAs obtained from a commercial supplier were tested to evaluate the inhibitory effect on bacterial growth by inhibiting the expression of the following essential genes: inhA (a fatty acid elongase), rpsL (ribosomal S12 protein), gyrA (DNA gyrase), pncA (pyrazinamidase), polA (DNA polymerase I) and rpoC (RNA polymerase β subunit) of M. smegmatis. Each PNA was tested at 20 μM, 10 μM, 5 μM and 2.5 μM concentrations to determine whether they caused a dose dependent killing of M. smegmatis cultured in Middlebrook 7h9 broth or in a J774A.1 murine macrophage cell line. Results: In Middlebrook broth, the strong growth inhibitory effect against M. smegmatis was observed by PNAs targeting the inhA and rpsL genes at all four concentrations. The PNAs targeting the pncA, polA and rpoC genes were found to exhibit strong growth inhibition against M. smegmatis but only at 20 μM concentration. No growth inhibition of M. smegmatis was seen in pure culture when treated with PNAs targeting gyrA and a mismatch PNA targeting dnaG (DNA primase). All six PNAs showed killing of M. smegmatis in J774A.1 macrophage cell line that were statistically significant (p Conclusion: It may be concluded from this study that PNAs could be potential therapeutics for mycobacterial infections.
