Severe erectile dysfunction （ED） remains a significant side effect among men following surgical intervention for treatment of clinically localized prostate cancer, despite development of nerve-sparing techniques （Weyne et al., 2015a; Sopko and Burnett, 2016）. The type of axonal injury due to prostatectomy is a classic peripheral neuropathy with an acute inflammatory phase that leads to Wallerian degeneration of the canvernous nerve （CN）, which can be followed by a regenerative phase characterized by enhanced neu- rotrophic factor activation and reduction in neuroinflam- mation （Weyne et al., 2015b）.

Australian cotton production predominantly occurs on Vertisols.The average lint yield of cotton grown in Australia is 2260–2700 kg·hm^(−2),which is 2.5 to 3 times the world average.This high productivity per unit of land area requires efficient use of resources such as water and nutrients.However,high yields accelerate the export of nutrients such as phosphorus(P)in seed,depleting the soil reserves of P more than in other countries with lower cotton yields.Recent surveys of cotton industry indicate that P application rates should match seed P export(30~40 kg·hm−2),but historical depletion within subsoil is still evident and is continuing.Depletion of soil P is typically more pronounced in the subsoil than in the topsoil(0~20 cm)where P fertiliser is applied,as cotton roots rely on these layers as important sources of plant available water and available P.This mismatch between zones of P uptake and resupply may increase stratification of available P in the soil profile.Recent studies showed that cotton responded poorly to banded applications of fertiliser P,while dispersal of fertiliser throughout the plant beds was more successful.Researchers have also observed sporadic cotton responses to applied P fertiliser in soils where available P concentrations were well above the previously determined critical concentrations indicative of fertiliser P responses in Australia.To sustain highyielding cotton production in Australia,a greater understanding of cotton root acquisition of applied P,as well as a re-examination of critical soil P concentrations for each production region are required.

In preparation for the Fourth International Workshop on Tropical Cyclone Landfall Processes(IWTCLP-IV), a summary of recent research studies and the forecasting challenges of tropical cyclone(TC) rainfall has been prepared. The extreme rainfall accumulations in Hurricane Harvey(2017) near Houston, Texas and Typhoon Damrey(2017) in southern Vietnam are examples of the TC rainfall forecasting challenges. Some progress is being made in understanding the internal rainfall dynamics via case studies. Environmental effects such as vertical wind shear and terrain-induced rainfall have been studied, as well as the rainfall relationships with TC intensity and structure. Numerical model predictions of TC-related rainfall have been improved via data assimilation, microphysics representation, improved resolution, and ensemble quantitative precipitation forecast techniques. Some attempts have been made to improve the verification techniques as well. A basic forecast challenge for TC-related rainfall is monitoring the existing rainfall distribution via satellite or coastal radars, or from over-land rain gauges. Forecasters also need assistance in understanding how seemingly similar landfall locations relative to the TC experience different rainfall distributions. In addition, forecasters must cope with anomalous TC activity and landfall distributions in response to various environmental effects.

Grasslands are globally-important ecosystems providing critical ecosystem services.The species composition and characteristics of grasslands vary considerably across the planet with a wide variety of different grasslands found.However,in many regions grasslands have been impacted by atmospheric nitrogen deposition originating from anthropogenic activities with effects on productivity,species composition and diversity widely reported.Impacts vary across grassland habitats but many show declines in species richness and increases in biomass production related to soil eutrophication and acidification.At a continental level,there is considerable variation in the research effort that has been put into understanding the impacts of nitrogen deposition.In Europe,North America and parts of Asia,although there are unanswered research questions,there is a good understanding of N deposition impacts in most grassland habitats.This is not the case in other regions with large knowledge gaps in some parts of the world.This paper reviews the impacts of N deposition on grasslands around the world,highlighting recent advances and areas where research is still needed.

This contribution summarizes the significant progress in a variety of topic areas related to internal tropical cyclone(TC)intensity change processes over 2018–2022 from the WMO Tenth International Workshop on Tropical Cyclones(IWTC-10).These topic areas include surface and boundary layer processes;TC internal structure and microphysical processes;and,radiation interactions with TCs.Recent studies better frame the uncertainty in the surface drag and enthalpy coefficients at high wind speeds.These parameters greatly impact TC intensity and it is therefore important that more direct measurements of these boundary layer parameters are made.Particularly significant scientific strides have been made in TC boundary layers.These advancements have been achieved through improved coupled models,large-eddy simulations,theoretical advance-ments,and detailed observations.It is now clear that the research field needs to better represent the eddy viscosity throughout the depth of the boundary layer.Furthermore,detailed study of coherent structures in TC boundary layers will likely be a propitious direction for the research community.Meanwhile,in-depth observational field campaigns and assiduous data analysis have made significant headway into verifying theory and modeling studies of intensification processes related to TC vortex alignment,efficient latent heating distributions,and overall 3D structure.Substantial efforts have also been made to better understand the intricate roles radiative processes play in TC evolution and intensity change.Finally,some promising progress has been made in the development of time-dependent theories of TC intensification and the predictability of internal TC intensity change.Overall,there have been well-earned gains in the understanding of intensity change processes intrinsic to the TC system,but the journey is not complete.This paper highlights some of the most relevant and important research areas that are still shedding new light into internal factors governing TC intensity change.

BACKGROUND Improved adenoma detection rate(ADR)has been demonstrated with artificial intelligence(AI)-assisted colonoscopy.However,data on the real-world appli-cation of AI and its effect on colorectal cancer(CRC)screening outcomes is limited.AIM To analyze the long-term impact of AI on a diverse at-risk patient population undergoing diagnostic colonoscopy for positive CRC screening tests or sympt-oms.METHODS AI software(GI Genius,Medtronic)was implemented into the standard proced-ure protocol in November 2022.Data was collected on patient demographics,procedure indication,polyp size,location,and pathology.CRC screening outcomes were evaluated before and at different intervals after AI introduction with one year of follow-up.RESULTS We evaluated 1008 colonoscopies(278 pre-AI,255 early post-AI,285 established post-AI,and 190 late post-AI).The ADR was 38.1%pre-AI,42.0%early post-AI(P=0.77),40.0%established post-AI(P=0.44),and 39.5%late post-AI(P=0.77).There were no significant differences in polyp detection rate(PDR,baseline 59.7%),advanced ADR(baseline 16.2%),and non-neoplastic PDR(baseline 30.0%)before and after AI introduction.CONCLUSION In patients with an increased pre-test probability of having an abnormal colonoscopy,the current generation of AI did not yield enhanced CRC screening metrics over high-quality colonoscopy.Although the potential of AI in colonoscopy is undisputed,current AI technology may not universally elevate screening metrics across all situations and patient populations.Future studies that analyze different AI systems across various patient populations are needed to determine the most effective role of AI in optimizing CRC screening in clinical practice.

The Effects of Exercise on Serum Chemistry, Non-Esterified Fatty Acid, Insulin and Glucagon Dynamics during a 400 Meter Sprint in Racing Greyhounds

The effects of Greyhound racing on plasma insulin, glucagon and non-esterified fatty acid have not been extensively studied. We sought to examine the effects of exercise in 19 greyhounds trialed over 400 meters on serum biochemistry, osmolality, nonessential fatty acids, and the major glucoregulatory hormones insulin and glucagon, before and after racing. Due to the non-traditional dietary patterns of many racing Greyhounds, the diet was analyzed for macro and micro-nutrient assessment to determine adequacy of the diet. Many significant biochemical changes were observed and agreed with previous studies, except for low resting glucose, low post-exercise globulin and phosphorus concentrations, and a high CK both before and after exercise. Insulin concentrations increased 10 minutes post-exercise which might be a result of the rise in serum glucose observed. Non-esterified fatty acids decreased 10 minutes post-exercise, as a likely result of the insulin facilitated cellular uptake of fatty acids early in recovery. Glucagon concentrations did not change after exercise despite the rise in insulin. The diet analysis found some mineral deficiencies in sodium, selenium, iodine and copper;and contained a far higher protein and fat content, being atypical of diets that have been shown to improve the performance in racing Greyhounds.

Brine shrimp Artemia franciscana provide food for many migrating and staging birds that spend summer and fall on Great Salt Lake,Utah,USA.Artemia produce live young and cysts(hard-walled eggs);these cysts are commercially harvested on Great Salt Lake and support a large industry in Utah.It is unclear the impact that millions of hungry birds have on the Artemia population in the lake.To help assess that,this study evaluated cyst viability(percentage of cysts that contain an embryo)and hatchability(percent of cysts that hatch)from cysts that had passed through the digestive tract of eared grebes Podiceps nigricollis and cysts obtained directly from Great Salt Lake at the same site where each grebe was collected.Hatchability was significantly higher for cysts collected from the water column(19%)than from the stomach(0.3%)or intestines(3%)of eared grebes.Viability also was significantly different for cysts collected from the water column(29%),stomach(0.7%),and intestines(5%).These results indicate that eared grebes nutritionally benefit from eating cysts and that they may be an important food source for grebes in late fall after the adult population of Artemia dies off due to the water becoming too cold.Also,enough cysts survive their passage through the digestive system that grebes can vector hatchable cysts to other waterbodies.
