Momentum considerations inside near-zero index materials

Near-zero index (NZI) materials, i.e., materials having a phase refractive index close to zero, are known to enhance or inhibit light-matter interactions. Most theoretical derivations of fundamental radiative processes rely on energetic considerations and detailed balance equations, but not on momentum considerations. Because momentum exchange should also be incorporated into theoretical models, we investigate momentum inside the three categories of NZI materials, i.e., inside epsilon-and-mu-near-zero (EMNZ), epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) and mu-near-zero (MNZ) materials. In the context of Abraham–Minkowski debate in dispersive materials, we show that Minkowski-canonical momentum of light is zero inside all categories of NZI materials while Abraham-kinetic momentum of light is zero in ENZ and MNZ materials but nonzero inside EMNZ materials. We theoretically demonstrate that momentum recoil, transfer momentum from the field to the atom and Doppler shift are inhibited in NZI materials. Fundamental radiative processes inhibition is also explained due to those momentum considerations inside three-dimensional NZI materials. Absence of diffraction pattern in slits experiments is seen as a consequence of zero Minkowski momentum. Lastly, consequence on Heisenberg inequality, microscopy applications and on the canonical momentum as generator of translations are discussed. Those findings are appealing for a better understanding of fundamental light-matter interactions at the nanoscale as well as for lasing applications.

Hey mister Tambourine Dove, sing a song for me: simple but individually specific songs of Turtur tympanistria from Cameroon

Background: The broadcast song of the Tambourine Dove (Turtur tympanistria) is a repetitive coo series produced in a very stereotyped way. The song is similar to those of the other species within the Turtur genus and likely reflects the adaptation to long distance signalling in tropical habitats. There is no study assessing individual variation of the Tambourine Dove song or for the possibility of identity coding through song features. Methods: We obtained recordings of 578 songs from 41 males within a population inhabiting montane forest in Cameroon between 2008 and 2018. Additionally, we analysed also recordings from automatic recorders working for a longer time during the year. Songs were analysed to get basic information about within- and between-individual spectro-temporal variation. Potential of identity coding and discriminant analyses were used to investigate if and how these songs may convey information about male identity. Results: The song of the Tambourine Dove is a very simple series of short, unmodulated whistles with low frequency and a narrow bandwidth. Measurements of single song features indicated either none or a weak potential for identity coding. The overall variation in song frequency characteristics was very low. However, the number of notes forming a song (and consequently the duration) had a similar variability both within- and between individuals. When using multiple song measurements discrimination analysis revealed a high potential for identity coding although it seems that the temporal pattern of the beginning of a song carries the most information about sender identity. The production of initial notes within a song has very precise, individually specific timing allowing for up to 96.7% correct recognitions of songs. Comparison of recordings from the same points but separated in time by over a month indicates that song parameters are individually stable over longer period. Approximate Compositional Values and Tissue Fatty Acid Profiles of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticusL.) Fed Azolla-Diets in Earthen Ponds

The approximate general composition and the fatty acid profile of Nile tilapia fed Azolla-diets in ponds were studied for 90 days. Six isonitrogenous (29.2% CP) and isoenergetic (16.9 kJ·g>sup>-1) diets were formulated to contain 0% (A0), 10% (A10), 20% (A>sub>20), 30% (A30), 40% (A40) and 50% (A50) of Azolla meal (AM), as partial fish meal (FM) substitutes. Diet A0 without AM served as a control. Fish growth decreased as AM level exceeded 20% in diets (P 0.05). Crude lipid was significantly lower in fish fed A50 and significant differences were also found in crude ash (P 20, A30 and A50. High level of the fern reduces growth without negatively affecting fatty acid in fish. Fish PUFA, especially the (n - 3) fatty acids, are affected positively, even when fed 50% AM, which is good for the quality of the fish produced in regard to the benefits for the health of consumers.

Mixed powders,particularly when the ingredients have different size,density and shape,tend to segregate during processing and handling,a process that has obvious technological and *** the well recognized consequences of powder segragation,this phenomenon,in food powders has not been systematically *** food powders can almost invariably be regarded as cohesive,selective segregation of certain fine ingredients is not uncommon. This research was designed to investigate the segregation mechanism of food powdere with special emphasis on the role of interparticle surface affinity between food powders of different chemical species in regulating the segregation *** established quantitative segregation criteria for food powders are non-existent,the paper also dealt with the development and testing of such criteria and the selection of appropriate experimental procedures for their determination. In order to quantify and monitor segregation intensity,binary mixtures of crystalline,proteinaceous and starchy food powders were subjected to vertical vibration by a specially designed reciprocating device enabling the control of the vibration frequency and to horizontal vibration using a commercial type of shaker. Also,the composition distribution in a container filled with the mixtures was sampled at various locations.

Efficacy of dihydroartemisinin-mefloquine on acute uncomplicated falciparum malaria

Objective　To evaluate the clinical efficacy of dihydroartemisinin-mefloquine on acute uncomplicated falciparum malaria. Methods　Fifty-four patients with symptomatic falciparum malaria were allocated to receive oral dihydroartemisinin at a single dose of 120?mg on day 1, followed by mefloquine, 750?mg and 500?mg on days 2 and 3, respectively. Follow-up was performed on days 1,2,3,4,7,14,21, and 28. Results　All patients had a rapid initial response to treatment. The parasite clearance time (PCT) after treatment was 30.7±3.6 hours. The fever subsidence time (FST) after treatment was 21.2±2.8 hours. Two patients had a recrudescence 21 and 25 days respectively after the disappearance of parasitemia, hence the recrudescence rate was 3.7% and the cure rate was 96.3%. No serious adverse effects were observed, only mild and transient nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite. Conclusion　A combination of dihydroartemisinin and mefloquine is effective in the treatment of acute uncomplicated falciparum malaria.

Autumn migration of Ospreys from two distinct populations in Poland reveals partial migratory divide

Background:Long-term ringing and telemetry studies show that the Osprey(Pandion haliaetus)is a broad-front migrant following different migratory flyways,depending on the geographical location of their breeding *** have investigated two distinct and declining populations of Osprey in Poland,separated by only a few hundred kilometres,and hypothesised they may exhibit two different migration *** followed mortality causes,comparing them between migration and stationary phases of annual cycle,as well as between two distinct ***:Nineteen Ospreys,both juveniles and adults,were equipped with GPS loggers in 2017-2020 in two populations in western and eastern Poland and followed on their autumn *** calculated the distance they covered on the migration,number of stopover days,migration duration,daily distances covered and departure dates to compare them between age and sex classes and between the eastern and western ***:Ospreys from the western and eastern populations showed a partial migratory *** the first migrated through a western flyway,the second followed a central flyway,resulting in crossing the Mediterranean Sea in distant passes that affected the distance *** mortality reached at least 67%in juveniles and at least 57%in ***:We showed that two distinct Osprey populations in Poland revealed a partial migratory divide,with one covering greater distances over sea and deserts over the central *** might affect individual survival rates and contribute to a steeper decline in one of the *** order for this to be confirmed,more individuals still have to be followed.

Two 90-day experiments were conducted in the same period in tanks and in earthen ponds to study the effects of culture systems on growth and fatty acid (FA) of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) fingerlings (mean weight: 16.3 g) fed Azolla, as partial replacement for fish meal (FM). Diets were isonitrogenous (29.2% CP) and isoenergetic (16.9 kJ·g-1) containing 0% (A0), 10% (A10), 20% (A20), 30% (A30), 40% (A40) and 50% (A50) of Azolla meal (AM) respectively. Diet A0, without AM, acted as a control. In both experiments, fish growth decreased as AM level increased in diets (P P 30-A50). Interestingly, those fish were rich in eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3). Consequently, the n-3/n-6 values decreased in tanks, whereas an increasing trend was found in ponds, and values were significantly higher in ponds than in tanks (0.35 - 0.53 vs. 0.08 - 0.17). The results suggest raising Nile tilapia with Azolladiets in ponds to improve growth and produce fish with a better FA composition, for the wellbeing of consumers.
